This article systemizes the types of musical improvisation according to various approaches to this phenomenon. It uses as the basis the classification by Ernst Ferand, which presently needs to be supplemented and clarified. It was stressed that the most general approach to the phenomenon of musical improvisation is its classification based on the layer principle (folklore, academic music, “third” layer). Within these layers, there are various forms of musical improvisation whose systemization is based on different principles, including: performer composition (collective or solo improvisation), process technology (full or partial improvisation), thematic orientation (improvisation theme in a broad and narrow context), etc. It was emphasized that classification of musical improvisation by types is manifested the most vividly when exemplified by jazz, which sums up the development of its principles and forms that shaped up in the previous eras in various regions of the world and have synthetized in the jazz language, which today reflects the interaction between such fundamental origins of musical thought as improvisation and composition. It was stated that the basic principles for classification of the types of musical improvisation include: 1) means of improvisation (voices; keyboard, string, wind and percussion instruments); 2) performer composition (solo or collective improvisation); 3) textural coordinates (vertical, horizontal, and melodic or harmonic improvisation, respectively); 4) performance technique (melodic ornaments, coloring, diminutiving, joining voices in the form of descant, organum, counterpoint); 5) scale of improvisation (absolute, relative; total, partial); 6) forms of improvisation: free, related; ornamental improvisation, variation, ostinato, improvisation on cantus firmus or another preset material (Ernst Ferand). It was stressed that as of today, the Ferand classification proposed back in 1938 needs to be supplemented by a number of new points, including: 1) improvisation of a mixed morphological type (music combined with dance and verbal text in two versions: a) invariable text and dance rhythm, b) a text and dance moves that are also improvised); 2) “pure” musical improvisation: vocal, instrumental, mixed (S. Maltsev). The collective form was the genetically initial form of improvisation, which included all components of syncretic action and functioned within the framework of cult ritual. Only later did the musical component per se grow separated (autonomous), becoming self-sufficient but retaining the key principle of dialogue that helps reproduce the “question-answer” system in any types of improvisation – a system that serves as the basis for creation of forms in the process of improvisation. Two more types of improvisation occur on this basis, differing from each other by communication type (Y. Lotman): 1) improvisation “for oneself” (internal type, characterized by reclusiveness and certain limitedness of information); 2) improvisation “for others” (external type, characterized by informational openness and variegation). It was emphasized that solo improvisation represents a special variety of musical improvisation, which beginning from the Late Renaissance era becomes dominating in the academic layer, distinguishable in the initial phase of its development for an improvising writing dualism (M. Saponov). The classification criterion of “composition” attains a new meaning in the system of professional music playing, to which improvisation also belongs. Its interpretation becomes dual and applies to the performance and textural components of improvisation, respectively. With regard to the former, two types occur in the collective form of improvisation: 1) improvisation by all participants (simultaneous or consecutive); 2)improvisation by a soloist against the background of invariable fixed accompaniment in other layers of music performance. The following types of improvisation occur in connection with the other – textural – interpretation of the term “composition”, which means inner logical principle of organization of musical fabric (T. Bershadska): 1) monodic, or monophonic (all cases of solo improvisation by voice or on melodic wind instruments); 2) heterophonic (collective improvisation based on interval duplications and variations of the main melody); 3) polyphonic (different-picture melodies in party voices of collective improvisation); 4) homophonic-harmonic (a combination of melodic and harmonic improvisations, typical for the playing on many-voiced harmonic instruments). It was emphasized that in the theory of musical improvisation, there is a special view at texture: on the one hand, it (like in a composition) “configures” (E. Nazaikinskyi) the musical fabric, and on the other hand, it is not a final representation thereof, i.e., it does not reach the value of Latin facio (“what has been done”). A work of improvisation is not an amorphous musical fabric; on the contrary, it contains its own textural organization, which, unlike a written composition, is distinguishable for the mobility and variability of possible textural solutions. The article’s concluding remarks state that classification of the types of musical improvisation in the aspect of its content and form must accommodate the following criteria: 1) performance type (voices, instruments, performance method, composition of participants, performance location); 2) texture type (real acoustic organization of musical space in terms of vertical, horizontal and depth parameters); 3) thematic (in the broad and narrow meanings of this notion: from improvisation on “idea theme” or “image theme” to variation improvisations on “text theme”, which could be represented by various acoustic structures: modes, ostinato figures of various types, melody themes like jazz evergreens, harmonic sequences, etc.).

Multichannel ABR recordings for 30 otoneurologic patients were reviewed independently by three audiologists to assess interjudge consistency in determining absolute latencies and overall interpretation of ABR results. Four months later, the tracings were reviewed a second time to evaluate intrajudge consistency in interpretation of ABR waveforms. Interjudge agreement in marking latencies for waves I, III, and V within 0.2 ms was on the order of 90% or better. Intrajudge consistency was slightly higher. Only rarely did inter- or intrajudge differences in latency measurements exceed 0.3 ms. Agreement in overall interpretation of ABR results as "normal" or "abnormal" was unanimous for 90% of the patients. Across pairs of judges, the agreement for "normal" and "abnormal" classification of the ABR tracings was 97%. Intrajudge consistency for "normal" and "abnormal" categorization of the ABR results was 100% for one judge, 97% for the other two judges.

The paper considers a point of view, based on the conception of the broad understanding of taxons. According to this point of view, rhyncholites of the subgenus Dentatobeccus and Microbeccus are accepted to be synonymous with the genus Rhynchoteuthis, and subgenus Romanovichella is considered to be synonymous with the genus Palaeoteuthis. The criteria, exercising influence on the different approaches to the classification of rhyncholites, have been analyzed (such as age and individual variability, sexual dimorphism, pathological and teratological features, degree of disintegration of material), underestimation of which can lead to inaccuracy. Divestment of the subgenuses Dentatobeccus, Microbeccus and Romanovichella, possessing very bright morphological characteristics, to have an independent status and denomination to their synonyms, has been noted to be unjustified. An artificial system (any suggested variant) with all its minuses is a single probable system for rhyncholites. The main criteria, minimizing its negative sides and proving the separation of the new taxon, is an available mass-scale material. The narrow understanding of the genus, used in sensible limits, has been underlined to simplify the problem of the passing the view about the genus to the other investigators and recognition of rhyncholites for the practical tasks.

Functional autonomic disorders occupy a significant part in the practice of neurologists and professionals of other specialties as well. However, there is no generally accepted classification of such disorders. In this paper the authors tried to show that functional autonomic pathology corresponds to the concept of somatoform disorders combining syndromes manifested by visceral, borderline psychopathological, neurological symptoms that do not have an organic basis. The relevance of the problem of somatoform disorders is that on the one hand many health professionals are not familiar enough with manifestations of borderline neuropsychiatric disorders, often forming functional autonomic disorders, and on the other hand they overestimate somatoform symptoms that are similar to somatic diseases.

This research is aimed at studying the Hunto Sultan Amay Mosque located in Gorontalo City. Hunto Sultan Amay Mosque is the oldest mosque in the city of Gorontalo The Hunto Sultan Amay Mosque was built as proof of Sultan Amay's love for a daughter and is a representation of Islam in Gorontalo. Researchers will investigate the visual form of the Hunto Sultan Amay Mosque which was originally like an ancient mosque in the archipelago. can be seen from the shape of the roof which initially used an overlapping roof and then converted into a dome as well as mosques in the world, we can be sure the Hunto Sultan Amay Mosque uses a dome roof after the arrival of Dutch Colonial. The researcher used a qualitative method by observing the existing form in detail from the building of the mosque with an aesthetic approach, reviewing objects and selecting the selected ornament giving a classification of the shapes, so that the section became a reference for the author as research material. Based on the analysis of this thesis, the form  of the Hunto Sultan Amay mosque as well as the mosques located in the archipelago and the existence of ornaments in the Hunto Sultan Amay Mosque as a decorative structure support the grandeur of a mosque. On the other hand, Hunto Mosque ornaments reveal a teaching. The form of a teaching is manifested in the form of motives and does not depict living beings in a realist or naturalist manner. the decorative forms of the Hunto Sultan Sultan Mosque in general tend to lead to a form of flora, geometric ornaments, and ornament of calligraphy dominated by the distinctive colors of Islam, namely gold, white, red, yellow and green.

In a radio frequency (RF) system, it is possible to use variable inductors for providing tunable or selective frequency range. Variable inductors can be implemented by the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) process or by using transistors as switches to change the routing of coils or coupling quantities. In this paper, we investigated the design method of a variable inductor by using MOS transistors to switch the main coil paths and the secondary coupled coils. We observed the effects of different metal layers, turn numbers, and layout arrangements for secondary-coupled coils and compared their characteristics on the inductances and quality factors. We implemented two chips in the 0.18 m CMOS process technology for each kind of arrangement for verification. One inductor can achieve inductance values from about 300 pH to 550 pH, and the other is between 300 pH and 575 pH, corresponding to 59.3% and 62.5%, respectively, inductance variation range at 4 GHz frequency. Additionally, their fine step sizes of the switched inductances are from 0.5% to 6% for one design, and 1% to 12.5% for the other. We found that both designs achieved a large inductance tuning range and moderate inductance step sizes with a slight difference behavior on the inductance variation versus frequency.

Abstract This study has set out to identify, quantify, typify, and exemplify the discourse functions of canonical antonymy in Arabic paremiography by comparing two manually collected datasets from Egyptian and Saudi (Najdi) dialects. Building upon Jones’s (2002) most extensive and often-cited classification of the discourse functions of antonyms as they co-occur within syntactic frames in news discourse, the study has substantially revised this classification and developed a provisional and dynamic typology thereof. Two major textual functions are found to be quantitatively significant and qualitatively preponderant: ancillarity (wherein an A-pair of canonical antonyms project their antonymicity onto a more important B-pair) and coordination (wherein one antonym holds an inclusive or exhaustive relation to another antonym). Three new functions have been developed and added to the retrieved classification: subordination (wherein one antonym occurs in a subordinate clause while the other occurs in a main clause), case-marking (wherein two opposite cases are served by two antonyms), and replacement (wherein one antonym is substituted with another). Semicanonical and noncanonical guises of antonymy are left and recommended for future research.

AbstractThe colour-magnitude diagrams of resolved stellar populations are the best tool to study the star formation histories of the host galactic regions. In this review the method to derive star formation histories by means of synthetic colour-magnitude diagrams is briefly outlined, and the results of its application to resolved galaxies of various morphological types are summarized. It is shown that all the galaxies studied so far were already forming stars at the lookback time reached by the observational data, independently of morphological type and metallicity. Early-type galaxies have formed stars predominantly, but in several cases not exclusively, at the earliest epochs. All the other galaxies appear to have experienced rather continuous star formation activities throughout their lifetimes, although with significant rate variations and, sometimes, short quiescent phases.

This paper is an exploration of the chronological development of a series of elaborate and architecturally distinctive chambered tombs on the Islands of Orkney. It begins with a short critique of the present views of the Orcadian Neolithic and highlights a failure to understand chronological developments as the most significant problem. Thus after a brief classification of the monuments there is a detailed discussion of the chronological evidence which consciously avoids typological assumptions. This is followed by an examination of the various uses the tombs were put to and involves an assessment of the location and architectural visibility of the monuments and the remains found in the chamber. When combined with the chronological evidence a series of changes in monument size, type, location and use can be hypothesized for the neolithic period. This culminates in a shift away from burial monuments to physically defined spaces, presumably used for ceremonial purposes. These changes can be interpreted as deliberate manipulation by groups within that society to change the ideological concepts which defined the role of the individual in relation to the other members of the society.

Since the remarkable paper by Professor Lapworth “On an Improved Classification of the Rhabdophora” was published in the Geological Magazine for 1873, a great deal of fresh information has been gathered as to these interesting fossils; but the classification given in that paper, though to some extent confessedly artificial, is still generally adhered to. Observations made by the authors in recent years lead them to suppose that that classification will in the future undergo considerable modification; but in the present state of our knowledge it serves a purpose so useful, that it is not our intention to propose any immediate change in it. Our object, on the other hand, is to bring forward certain conclusions which we have independently reached, and which will, we believe, enhance the value of Graptolites to the stratigraphical geologist, and lead to results important to the biologist. Our conclusions are based upon an examination of a large number of forms generally referred to the family Dichograptidæ; but, as we propose very briefly to indicate, they affect the relationships of Graptolites belonging to other families also.

AbstractIn this paper the authors study quotients of the product of elliptic curves by a rigid diagonal action of a finite group G. It is shown that only for $$G = {{\,\mathrm{He}\,}}(3), {\mathbb {Z}}_3^2$$ G = He ( 3 ) , Z 3 2 , and only for dimension $$\ge 4$$ ≥ 4 such an action can be free. A complete classification of the singular quotients in dimension 3 and the smooth quotients in dimension 4 is given. For the other finite groups a strong structure theorem for rigid quotients is proven.
