Experiential Learning of Networking Technologies: Understanding Web Security

With the rapid increase in the volume of e-commerce, the security of web-based transactions is of increasing concern. A widespread but dangerously incorrect belief among web users is that all security issues are taken care of when a website uses HTTPS (secure HTTP). While HTTPS does provide security, websites are often developed and deployed in ways that make them and their users vulnerable to hackers. In this article we explore some of these vulnerabilities. We first introduce the key ideas and then provide several experiential learning exercises so that readers can understand the challenges and possible solutions to them in a hands-on manner.

The security of web-based services is currently playing a vital role for the software industry. In recent years, many technologies and standards have emerged in order to handle the security issues related to web services. This paper shows techniques to enhance the security of web services, and some of the recent challenges and recommendations of a proposed model to secure web services. It shows the security process of a real life web application, which includes; HTML5 forms, login security, and a single signon solution. This paper also aim to discuss the ten (10) most common web security vulnerabilities and how to prevent the web application from three (3) of the vulnerabilities. Amongst them are; SQL Injection, Cross Site Scripting and Broken Authentication, and Session Management.

At the undergraduate level, most Computer Networking curricula aim to familiarize students with key networking technologies and standards, with an emphasis on breadth rather than depth of understanding. This is detrimental to students in two ways. First, students obtain a rudimentary or incomplete understanding of inherently complex yet fundamental concepts. Second, students are often unable to translate their limited understanding into diagnosis and action while troubleshooting networks. In this series of articles, we describe a small set of hands-on experiments (which have been iteratively refined over six years) that offer learners opportunities to reflect on their understanding. The feedback collected from our students confirms that this experiential learning helps students gain a lasting understanding of the workings of computer networks. All experiments can be conducted as 1-2 hour exercises in a networking lab, or even at home with minimal setup.

Web security threats have undergone much sophistication compared to their initial introduction and they are becoming more & more evolved every day. The evolution might be in terms of new ways of attack or bringing in resistance to using simulated OS or VM environments. Web service architecture is a set of standard protocols to communicate secure web services. Which include policy, security, trust, secure conversation, reliable messaging and automatic transactions. Security is one of the major issues which reduces the growth of computing and complications with data privacy and data protection continue to plague the market. A new model targeting at improving features of an existing model must not risk or threaten other important features of the current model. The architecture of web poses such a threat to the security of the existing technologies when deployed in a web-based environment. In this chapter, the different security risks presented and specific to the different security issues that has emanated due to the nature of the service delivery models.

This study aims to identify factors that influence the effectiveness of practical woodworking and determine the effectiveness of practical woodworking from the perspective of students of secondary vocational schools in the province of Aceh. Factors studied were the workshop equipment, safety workshops, teaching skills, the workshop environment and student interest. This study was designed to investigate the significant differences concerning factors woodworking practical effectiveness based on demographic factors. A total of 130 respondents were randomly selected from six vocational schools in the province of Aceh. The instrument consists of a set of questionnaire consisting of 49 items and distributed to second level students. Data analysis using the two types of statistics, namely descriptive statistics and statistical inference. The results showed no significant difference between factors woodworking practical effectiveness based on demographic factors except the income level of parents and the parents of the respondents work. The results of multiple linear regression analysis stepwise method found that only four factors (environmental factors workshops, the students interest, the skills of teachers and workshop equipment factors) that affect the practical effectiveness of woodworking with the correlation coefficient R = 0.779. This shows there is a significant effect of the four factors, the effectiveness of practical woodworking, accounting for 60.6% (R2 = 0.606) changes in the variance in effectiveness of hands-on woodworking, and between the four factors, the workshop environment is the factor that most influences the effectiveness practical woodworking by contributing 43.3% (R2 = 0.433) of the variance in effectiveness of practical woodworking. The main implication of this study is the need for attention from the authorities to be more serious in efforts to improve the facilities and infrastructure in the workshop as well as security issues in practical workshops so that the effectiveness of the woodwork to be more robust.

In this applied thesis project, a sample booklet of various expired silver gelatin papers is created. Specific information on the use of expired photographic papers by contemporary photographers is discussed as well as insights from collection caretakers (collection managers/archivists/conservators) on the possible implications that printing with expired silver gelatin papers may have for the long-term preservation of photographic works. The major contribution of this thesis is to create and gain a better understanding of tools that can be used in the characterisation and identification of expired silver gelatin papers. It is also to demonstrate that a tactile tool such as the sample booklet can assist in identifying various deterioration events. I feel that it is important to have a hands-on source that can be used independently or collectively with other sources such as web-based visual identification tools. The booklet will be useful as an educational tool for students, collection care takers, as well as professionals in the photographic field.

Management studies have been criticized for lagging behind the actual needs of organizations, ignoring experiential dimensions. We address this issue by applying experiential learning theory using an accountancy-oriented board game designed to help participants learn about cost management. The game was played in a pricing course with an enrolment of 104 accountancy students. We examined the impact levels of game entertainment and comprehensibility on the course material comprehension as well as the game’s impact on the final grade in the course. Results show that game participants had significantly higher grades than students that did not participate in the game, and that entertainment and comprehensibility of the game predict the understanding of course material. We also found that managerial employment capability can be predicted by level of challenge participants derive from the game. This study addresses the gap between traditional management education and practice. It provides empirical evidence of the value of hands-on gameplay experience for assimilation of course concepts and strategies. The results confirmed the importance of exposing players through an entertaining game simulation to challenges that arise in the business world. In addition, we lay the ground for future studies on the novel usage of the game as a tool to assess management skills.

In Japan, where there is a bias toward English-only in foreign language education, there are also grassroots efforts to introduce greater plurality in the classroom. However, introducing diverse languages and cultures into the classroom can lead to folklorization, the delivering of essentialized information in pre-packaged formats, which can potentially delegitimize other languages and cultures. This contribution examines a collaborative integrative plurilingual STEAM practice at an elementary school in Western Japan. In the ‘school lunches project,' the children experience various international cuisine, leading up to which they would engage with related languages and cultures through collaboratively produced plurilingual videos and museum-like exhibits of cultural artifacts. The interdisciplinary, hands-on, experiential learning within this project helped the children to develop an investigative stance toward linguistic and cultural artifacts, nurture a deeper awareness of languages and openness to diversity, foster reflexivity, and encourage interdisciplinary engagement.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is inter communication of embedded devices using networking technologies. The IoT will be one of the important trends in future; can affect the networking, business and communication. In this paper, proposing a remote sensing parameter of the human body which consists of pulse and temperature. The parameters that are used for sensing and monitoring will send the data through wireless sensors. Adding a web based observing helps to keep track of the regular status of patient. The sensing data will be continuously collected in a database and will be used to inform patient to any unseen problems to undergo possible diagnosis. Experimental results prove the proposed system is user friendly, reliable, economical. IoT typically expected to propose the advanced high bandwidth connectivity of embedded devices, systems and services which goes beyond machine –to – machine (M2M) context. The advanced connectivity of devices aide in automation is possible in nearly all field. Everyone today is so busy in their lives; even they forget to take care of their health. By keeping all these things in minds, technology really proves to be an asset for an individual. With the advancement in technology, lots of smart or medical sensors came into existence that continuously analyzes individual patient activity and automatically predicts a heart attack before the patient feels sick.
