The expensive nature of currently used materials in the soft robotic industry demands the consideration of alternative materials for fabrication. This work investigates the performance of RTV-2 grade silicone rubber for fabrication of a soft actuator. Initially, a cylindrical actuator is fabricated using this material and its performance is experimentally assessed for different pressures. Further, parametric variations of the effect of wall thickness and inflation pressure are studied by numerical methods. Results show that, both wall thickness and inflation pressure are influential parameters which affect the elongation behaviour of the actuator. Thin (1.5 mm) sectioned actuators produced 76.97% more elongation compared to thick sectioned, but the stress induced is 89.61 % higher. Whereas, the thick sectioned actuator (6 mm) showed a higher load transmitting capability. With change in wall thickness from 1.5 mm to 6 mm, the elongation is reduced by 76.97 %, 38.35 %, 21.05 % and 11.43 % at pressure 100 kPa, 75 kPa, 50 kPa and 25 kPa respectively. The induced stress is also found reduced by 89.61 %, 86.66 %, 84.46 % and 68.68 % at these pressures. The average load carrying capacity of the actuator is found to be directly proportional to its wall thickness and inflation pressure.

Abstract This paper is to present a method and procedure for modeling the constitutive law of anti-vibration rubber hyperelasticity based on finite element simulations. The hyperelasticity of rubber-like material is briefly summarized first. Then a method and procedure for determining an accurate constitutive law of rubber hyperelasticity from uniaxial tension and compression experiment data is presented and implemented. Due to nonlinear elastic properties of rubber and application limitations of various forms of constitutive law, results of finite element simulation to rubber material experiments show that different forms of constitutive law have to be adopted in different ranges of strain. The proposed procedure to obtain an appropriate constitutive law of rubber hyperelasticity of vibration isolator provides engineers with an effective modeling technique for design and analysis of anti-vibration rubber components. Finally, models of three kinds of rubber materials of a hydraulically damped rubber mount (HDM) are determined by tests and finite element simulations and applied to static and dynamic characteristic analysis of the HDM. The predicted elastic characteristics of the HDM and its major rubber components agree well with experimental data, which demonstrates the practicability and effectiveness of the presented modeling technique to modeling engineering rubber materials in dynamic systems.

Abstract: The packer rubber stress in the bottom hole is more complex. Based on constitutive model of the packer rubber material, this paper determines such parameters as model constants, Poisson's ratio of rubber materials and elastic modulus by using experimental method, to build up the finite element model of center tube-rubber cylinder-casing for the purpose of stress analysis. Finally, the distribution regularity of rubber cylinder-casing contact stress and packer setting travel distance with varying loads is concluded. The results can provide the theoretical basis for further analysis of packer rubber sealing performance.

For ultrahigh-pressure piston pumps, in the reciprocating action of the piston, the fretting between the static face seal and the mating surface occurs with the change of the pressure in the piston chamber. This phenomenon will seriously affect the service life of the seal ring and lead to the failure of the pump. However, the failure of static seals used to seal ultrahigh-pressures is usually studied from the directions of shear, stress, or rubber material. These studies cannot explain the failure phenomenon of the sealing ring found in our experiment. This paper analyzed the failure of the face seal ring in a piston pump with a maximum pressure of 120 MPa. A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element model was established based on the Mooney-Rivlin constitutive relation of the rubber material, and the fretting conditions of the sealing ring were analyzed. Combined with the wear scars observed by the scanning electron microscope the face seal ring’s dynamic failure mechanism on the ultrahigh-pressure piston pump was determined. A better sealing scheme was proposed and verified by the duration test of the pump, which provided a basis for the design of the sealing of the ultrahigh-pressure fluid with high-frequency fluctuations.
