A procedure for obtaining the load distribution in a four point contact wind turbine yaw bearing considering the effect of the structure’s elasticity is presented. The inhomogeneous stiffness of the supporting structures creates a variation in the results obtained with a rigid model. A finite element model substituting the rolling elements with nonlinear compression springs has been built to evaluate the effect of the supporting structure elasticity on the contact forces between the rolling elements and the raceways.

A new foil gas bearing with spring bumps was constructed, analyzed, and tested. The new foil gas bearing uses a series of compression springs as compliant underlying structures instead of corrugated bump foils. Experiments on the stiffness of the spring bumps show an excellent agreement with an analytical model developed for the spring bumps. Load capacity, structural stiffness, and equivalent viscous damping (and structural loss factor) were measured to demonstrate the feasibility of the new foil bearing. Orbit and coast-down simulations using the calculated stiffness and measured structural loss factor indicate that the damping of underlying structure can suppress the maximum peak at the critical speed very effectively but not the onset of hydrodynamic rotor-bearing instability. However, the damping plays an important role in suppressing the subsynchronous vibrations under limit cycles. The observation is believed to be true with any air foil bearings with different types of elastic foundations.

The disadvantage of the known methods of hardening springs is the impossibility of their use when hardening springs of a conical shape or of a shape of a paraboloid of rotation, since they are intended only for cylindrical shape springs and are not suitable for conical shape springs or those of a shape of a paraboloid of rotation specifically because of the difference in the shape of the springs. One of the disadvantages of the known springs hardening mechanisms is the impossibility of hardening the inner surface of the conical compression springs. A new method of hardening springs is proposed, the unmatched advantage of which is the ability to create plastic deformations on the inner and outer surfaces of the spring coils compressed to contact and on the surfaces along the line of contact between the coils. A new advantageous mechanism for hardening springs is proposed, which makes it possible to harden the inner surface of compression springs having a conical shape or a paraboloid shape of rotation, in a compressed state.

Abstract This study aims to design two types of vibration isolators, with different spring mechanisms, using a foldable structure that is based on a cylinder torsional buckling pattern, and evaluate the vibration isolation performance of each design. Vibration isolation is achieved through nonlinear spring characteristics of the isolators, which have zero spring stiffness, achieved by attaching a linear spring to the foldable isolator structure. The two vibration isolators differ in the mechanical elements that constitute the foldable structure, which undergo tensile forces as the structure folds. For the first isolator, the mechanical elements are represented only by tension springs, which appropriately undergo tension. For the second isolator, the mechanical elements are designed so that embedded compression springs within the elements compress under tension, thus enabling the elements to work as tension springs. The excitation experiment results revealed that the different spring mechanisms produced equivalent resonance frequencies but different damping effects at the resonance and higher frequencies. When oscillations with multiple amplitudes were input, larger input amplitudes were found to correspond to lower resonance frequencies for both isolators. This trend contradicts that described in the nonlinear vibration theory modeled by the Duffing equation, and was determined to be caused by hysteresis of the spring phenomena in the vibration isolators.
