Our experiences concerning fluorescent molecular sensing and logic devices and their intersections with polymer science are the foci of this brief review. Proton-, metal ion- and polarity-responsive cases of these devices are placed in polymeric micro- or nano-environments, some of which involve phase separation. This leads to mapping of chemical species on the nanoscale. These devices also take advantage of thermal properties of some polymers in water in order to reincarnate themselves as thermometers. When the phase separation leads to particles, the latter can be labelled with identification tags based on molecular logic. Such particles also give rise to reusable sensors, although molecular-scale resolution is sacrificed in the process. Polymeric nano-environments also help to organize rather complex molecular logic systems from their simple components. Overall, our little experiences suggest that researchers in sensing and logic would benefit if they assimilate polymer concepts.

Purpose Radio frequency identification tags for passive sensing have attracted wide attention in the area of Internet of Things (IoT). Among them, some tags can sense the property change of objects without an integrated sensor, which is a new trend of passive sensing based on tag. The purpose of this paper is to review recent research on passive self-sensing tags (PSSTs). Design/methodology/approach The PSSTs reported in the past decade are classified in terms of sensing mode, composition and the ways of power supply. This paper presents operation principles of PSSTs and analyzes the characteristics of them. Moreover, the paper focuses on summarizing the latest sensing parameters of PSSTs and their matching equipment. Finally, some potential applications and challenges faced by this emerging technique are discussed. Findings PSST is suitable for long-term and large-scale monitoring compared to conventional sensors because it gets rid of the limitation of battery and has relatively low cost. Also, the static information of objects stored in different PSSTs can be identified by a single reader without touch. Originality/value This paper provides a detailed and timely review of the rapidly growing research in PSST.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze nursing reports at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital and indentify nursing report features at the ICU. Method: descriptive study held between October/2009 and January/2010, applying a data-collection instrument to 100 nursing reports in patients’ records of an adult ICU of a private hospital in the municipality of Curitiba, Paraná State/Brazil. The criteria for record inclusion in the study were adult patients of both sexes, regardless the pathology and/or complications and health insurance plans, longer than three-day admission in the ICU. This research followed the procedures recommended by Resolution nº 196/96, and was approved by the Research Ethics Committee from Universidade Tuiuti do Paraná (Opinion 000124/2009). Results: among the results, it can be pointed out: missing patients’ identification tags; reports presenting blanks, scratches or correction fluid erasures; missing signing; incorrect checking and incomplete records from Systematization of Nursing Care. Conclusion: as nursing reports mean safety to patients and institutions and reflect the quality of care delivery, it was perceived the need to steady improvement in this recording process. RESUMOObjetivos: analisar as anotações de enfermagem em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva – UTI de um hospital privado e identificar as características dos registros de enfermagem na UTI. Método: estudo descritivo realizado de outubro de 2009 a janeiro de 2010, aplicando um instrumento de coleta de dados a 100 anotações de enfermagem em prontuários de pacientes de uma UTI geral adulto de um hospital privado do município de Curitiba-PR. Os critérios de inclusão de prontuários no estudo foram: pacientes adultos, de ambos os sexos, independente da patologia e/ou complicações e plano de saúde, com mais de três dias de internação na UTI. Esta pesquisa seguiu os procedimentos recomendados pela Resolução nº 196/96 e foi aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa em Humanos da Universidade Tuiuti do Paraná, sob o número 000124/2009. Resultados: dentre os resultados destacam-se: falta de etiquetas de identificação de pacientes; anotações com espaços em branco, rasuras e utilização de corretor ortográfico; falta de assinatura; checagem incorreta e registros da Sistematização da Assistência de Enfermagem incompletos. Conclusão: como as anotações de enfermagem representam segurança ao paciente e à instituição e refletem a qualidade da assistência prestada, percebeu-se a necessidade de melhoria contínua desse processo de registros. Este estudio dio seguimiento a los procedimientos recomendados por la Resolución 196/96 y aprobado por la Ética en la Investigación Humana de la Universidad Tuiuti con el número 000124/2009. Resultados: entre los resultados, se destacan: ausencia de etiquetas de identificación de pacientes; apuntes con espacios en blanco, tachones y utilización de corrector ortográfico; falta de firma; chequeo incorrecto y registros de la Sistematización da Asistencia de Enfermería incompletos. Conclusión: como los apuntes de enfermería representan seguridad para el paciente y para la institución y reflejan la cualidad de la asistencia prestada, se ha percibido la necesidad de mejoría continua de ese proceso de registros. Passive radio frequency identification-based technology is a convincing approach to the achievement of versatile energy- and cost-efficient wireless platforms for future wearable applications. By using two-part antenna structures, the antenna-electronics interconnections can remain non-stressed, which can significantly improve the reliability of the textile-embedded wireless components. In this article, we describe fabrication of two-part stretchable and non-stretchable passive ultra-high frequency radio frequency identification textile tags using electro-textile and embroidered antennas, and test their reliability when immersed as well as under cyclic strain. The results are compared to tags with traditional one-part dipole antennas fabricated from electro-textiles and by embroidery. Based on the results achieved, the initial read ranges of the two-part antenna tags, around 5 m, were only slightly shorter than those of the one-part antenna tags. In addition, the tag with two-part antennas can maintain high performance in a moist environment and during continuous stretching, unlike the one-part antenna tag where the antenna-integrated circuit attachment is under stress.

This chapter introduces the concept of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) with regard to the enabling technologies and how they are combined to assist e-entrepreneurs. AmI is a new paradigm in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). AmI allows for seamless interaction between the human and technology. The AmI system provides the human user with information and decision support tailored to their specific needs. To achieve seamless interaction between the human and technology requires the environment that surrounds the human to be embedded with technology in everyday objects. These technologies gather information that the AmI system uses to adapt its responses to the human user. The aim of the chapter is to provide a better understanding of the AmI process and knowledge of the AmI system and tools. To this end three of the enabling technologies are discussed: semantic web, multi-modal services, and radio frequency identification tags. These technologies are then examined within the AmI reference model. The reference model provides an understanding of how the technologies can be combined to achieve different AmI features for the human users. This toolkit can be used by a new venture in the area of e-entrepreneurship to provide AmI to service providers, new businesses and traditional industries.
