One of the barriers holding back the large-scale development of electric vehicles is underdeveloped charging infrastructure. The optimal location of charging stations has received much attention, whereas the development of charging infrastructure over time and its economic implications remain a less explored topic, especially in the context of dynamic inductive charging. This work compares the infrastructure costs for two electric vehicle charging solutions deployed on highways: fast-charging stations and a dynamic charging lane based on wireless inductive charging technology. The deployment costs are estimated using a simplified infrastructure model for a highway corridor. The model first defines the required charging capacity based on projected future demand, sizes the charging infrastructure, and then determines the related costs, revenues, and net present value. A numerical example based on the French highway context is also presented. The results show that the payback period is much longer for dynamic charging lanes that for charging stations. In addition, the charging lane infrastructure cannot be installed gradually over time but requires a major investment from the start while bringing in little revenue early on.

Large scale electric vehicles integration into power grid, as nonlinear loads, will pose inevitable impacts on the operation of power system, one of which the harmonic problem will affect the power quality greatly. Firstly, the article analyzes the characteristics of harmonic caused by electric vehicle charging. And then, the harmonic flow distribution is analyzed based on the IEEE standard node systems. During transient analyses, the electric vehicle charging stations connected to electric grid are represented as harmonic sources. Results show that structure and voltage grade of electric grid, capacity and access points of electric vehicle charging load will have different effects on harmonic problem. At last, a few conclusions are given for connecting electric vehicles to electric grid.

Electric vehicle charging, since the uncertainty of the travel area, and the different load control of the charging infrastructure grid and the different rates over time, needs to face different charging devices and use different charging parameters. The situation is very complex, so electric vehicle needs to be adaptive control for various situations in the charging process. Aiming at the communication between electric vehicle and power grid, there is no relevant national standards promulgated. After comparing several possible communication modes, I choose to use the PLC communication, and SDP for charging device to automatically obtain and connections. Charging parameter passing through the communication between the electric vehicle and charging facilities, in order to realize the adaptive control of electric vehicle charging.

This chapter presents a detailed study of renewable energy integrated charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) and discusses its various aspects such as siting requirements, standards of charging stations, integration of renewable energy sources for powering up charging stations and interfacing devices between charging facilities and smart grid. A smart charging station for EVs is explained along with its essential components and different charging methodologies are explained. It has been recognized that the amalgamation of electric vehicles in the transportation sector will trigger power issues due to the mobility of vehicles beyond the stretch of home area network. In this regard an information and communication technology (ICT) based architecture may support EVs management with an aim to enhance the electric vehicle charging and energy storage capabilities with the relevant considerations. An ICT based solution is capable of monitoring the state of charge (SOC) of EV batteries, health and accessible amount of energy along with the mobility of EVs.

Concerns about the need for clean energy and the need to reduce green-house gases have led researchers and engineers to explore adoption of electric vehicle technology. Electric vehicles hold a promising future due to their efficiency, low maintenance cost and zero carbon emission. Unfortunately, due to metric range drawbacks associated with electric vehicles, large scale adoption of electric vehicles still remains relatively low. To solve this issue of range anxiety, optimal placement and sizing methods of electric vehicle infrastructure is essential. This paper presents a review of optimal siting of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. It discusses impacts of electric vehicle charging loads on the distribution network and how large scale electric vehicle penetration would affect the grid. Further, the benefits of electric vehicles on the distribution network as well as the integration of renewable energy resources are presented.
