A spatially integrated one-dimensional numerical model of inlet bay hydraulics has been combined with a simple sediment transport model to investigate selected tidal inlet-bay system characteristics. A parametric study has been performed using the models to determine the effect of various factors on the net direction and order of magnitude of inlet channel flow and sediment transport. Factors considered include astronomical tide type, storm surge height and duration, variation in bay surface area, time-dependent channel friction factor, and the addition of a second inlet connecting the bay and sea.

A numerical model for simulating unsteady flow and sediment transport in the mainstream and its tributaries at the TGR was presented in this paper, and a three-gradation method was applied to solve the flow governing equation. A experience formula was gave for the calculation of the size of groups of different coefficient of saturation recovery based on the analysis, so the traditional calculation method was improved in this paper. The validity of the model was checked with the observed data of the TGR from 2003 to 2011. Good agreement between the calculation and observed data was obtained. The simulation results show that this model could be used to simulate the flow and sediment transport at the TGR.

Regarding the hydrodynamics, within the past two decades it has become popular in numerical modeling of free-surface flow to adopt a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes approach, where the volume of fluid (VOF) method is utilized to track the evolution of free-surface. However, this robust numerical model has not been widely applied to the study of sediment transport processes. In this study, we shall extend the numerical model to simulate suspended sediment transport and study the erosion pattern during the initial stage of the dam break flow. We also conducted a series of experiments in a horizontal channel of rectangular section and recorded the snap shots of surface profiles of a dam- break wave during the initial stage of dam-break. Measured data is utilized here to study the hydrodynamics and to validate the numerical model.

Numerical model is a useful tool in studying the flow and sediment transport, change in river bed and is built on solving governing differential equations. Numerical model has many different levels and three-dimensional model is the highest level, allowing detailed simulation of flow and sediment transport process in 3D space. The paper presents a method calculating three - dimensional flow and sediment transport in the open channel. Water level and flow velocity are solved from three-dimensional equations with hydrostatic hypothesis. Concentration of suspended sediment, bottom sediment and bottom evolution is solved from transport equations. The governing differential equations in the "sigma" transform coordinate system are solved by finite volume method on unstructured grid of quadrilateral elements. Boundary condition of water level or flow will be imposed on open boundary. For suspended sediment concentrations in the injected phase, suspended sediment concentrations are applied and the outflow phase applies free drainage conditions. This method of calculation was tested with the problem of curved channel sediment transport which was studied experimentally by Odgaard and Bergs. Calculation results are quite consistent with the measured data. In order to test the practical applicability, this method is also tested with the problem of sediment transport in Cu lao Pho islet on Dong Nai river. To solve the matter of hydraulic boundary condition of this problem, the model of Cu lao Pho islet is integrated into the Sai Gon - Dong Nai river system model. Results of the calculation of the river bed evolution of the Cu lao Pho islet on the Dong Nai river also show that this calculation method gives results consistent with the rule and can be used in practical research.

Abstract. The continuing development of computational fluid dynamics is allowing the high resolution study of hydraulic and sediment transport processes but, due to computational complexities, these are rarely applied to areas larger than a reach. Existing approaches, based upon linked cross sections, can give a quasi two-dimensional view, effectively simulating sediment transport for a single river reach. However, a basin represents a whole discrete dynamic system within which channel, floodplain and slope processes operate over a wide range of space and time scales. Here, a cellular automaton (CA) approach has been used to overcome some of these difficulties, in which the landscape is represented as a series of fixed size cells. For every model iteration, each cell acts only in relation to the influence of its immediate neighbours in accordance with appropriate rules. The model presented here takes approximations of existing flow and sediment transport equations, and integrates them, together with slope and floodplain approximations, within a cellular automaton framework. This method has been applied to the basin of Cam Gill Beck (4.2 km2 ) above Starbotton, upper Wharfedale, a tributary of the River Wharfe, North Yorkshire, UK. This approach provides, for the first time, a workable model of the whole basin at a 1 m resolution. Preliminary results show the evolution of bars, braids, terraces and alluvial fans which are similar to those observed in the field, and examples of large and small scale non-linear behaviour which may have considerable implications for future models.
