The assessment of suspended-solids dynamics is crucial for the effective monitoring of estuarine environments. As the recurring in-situ sampling is usually problematic, the calibration of the backscattering from acoustic Doppler profilers has shown to be a reliable technique to estimate the suspended-solids concentration (SSC) in estuaries and rivers. In this study, we obtained a linear model that provides SSC estimates for the estuarine channel of Patos Lagoon by calibrating turbidity and acoustic data with in-situ concentration samples. The model output was analyzed in terms of its relationship with estuarine hydrodynamics and temporal variability. In this estuary, the supply of suspended solids is known to be due the runoff from its main tributaries, but also through the exchanges between the estuary and the coastal ocean. Both sources provide sediments and organic solids which affect water quality, geomorphology, and harbor operations. Results show that SSC is strongly linked to estuarine hydrodynamics, where concentrations increase with streamflow. During outflow periods, higher concentrations are associated with river runoff, whereas with inflow conditions they are induced by southern and southwesterly winds. However, relationship between SSC and streamflow is asymmetrical, meaning that the largest concentrations are majorly linked to outflow currents and downstream transport.

Due to the slow growth of nitrification bacteria at low temperatures, nitrogen reduction normally requires long hydraulic retention time during winter. Important for the nitrification process is the aerated sludge age. Factors influencing the sludge age are aerated volume, mixed liquor suspended solids concentration, organic loading and sludge yield. In an existing plant you cannot easily expand the volume and the load is difficult to decrease. But the suspended solids concentration can be increased by running the biological step with the contact stabilisation process. At the Käppala Association sewage treatment plant in Lidingö just outside Stockholm, one of the six aeration tanks has been reconstructed for full scale nitrogen removal experiments. In this tank the old aeration system has been replaced with rubber membrane diffusers. Further more there are several zones separated by walls in the tank. The tank can thereby be run with great flexibility. By running it with the contact stabilisation process, the sludge age has been improved by a factor between 1.5 and 2 and thereby it succeeds in keeping the nitrification bacteria in the system even during snow melting. At temperatures of about 9 °C and hydraulic retention times of less than 3 hours in the contact zone there has been a nitrification degree of up to 50 to 60 %. The experiment was conducted with a stabilisation zone of up to half the total volume of the aeration tank. The main purpose for the experiments during the winter seasons was to improve nitrification. Keeping the nitrifiers in the system had been a crucial problem during previous years. When the nitrifiers were lost with an increased flow and decreased temperature the nitrification process didn't restart until the temperature was increased and the load decreased. Usually this didn't occur until the middle of the summer meaning a loss of nitrification for up to six months. In Sweden there is a goal set for 50 % nitrogen reduction for the plants in the Stockholm region. At Käppala we manage to keep 60 to 70 % nitrogen reduction during the warm season, that is from July to December. If we can keep up the nitrification the whole year we can achieve 50 % as a yearly average under normal conditions even though we can't keep the nitrogen reduction rate as high during the cold season.

The use of road tunnels in urban areas creates water pollution problems, since the tunnels must be frequently cleaned for traffic safety reasons. The washing generates extensive volumes of highly polluted water, for example, more than fivefold higher concentrations of suspended solids compared to highway runoff. The pollutants in the wash water have an affinity for particulate material, so sedimentation should be a viable treatment option. In this study, 12 in situ sedimentation trials were carried out on tunnel wash water, with and without addition of chemical flocculent. Initial suspended solids concentration ranged from 804 to 9,690 mg/L. With sedimentation times of less than 24 hours and use of a chemical flocculent, it was possible to reach low concentrations of suspended solids (<15 mg/L), PAH (<0.1 μg/L), As (<1.0 μg/L), Cd (<0.05 μg/L), Hg (<0.02 μg/L), Fe (<200 μg/L), Ni (<8 μg/L), Pb (<0.5 μg/L), Zn (<60 μg/L) and Cr (<8 μg/L). Acute Microtox® toxicity, mainly attributed to detergents used for the tunnel wash, decreased significantly at low suspended solids concentrations after sedimentation using a flocculent. The tunnel wash water did not inhibit nitrification. The treated water should be suitable for discharge into recipient waters or a wastewater treatment plant.

The present work investigated the diet and feeding strategy of a dusky grouper population inhabiting a 4.5 km long pair of rocky jetties located in the mouth of Patos Lagoon estuary. No prior research has been conducted in such man-made habitat and the current study provides a basis for comparative studies on the diet of the dusky grouper populations inhabiting natural vs. man-made rocky habitats. Similarly with previous studies on natural substrates, crabs and fishes were the main food categories consumed (%IRI = 85.1 and %IRI = 12.6, respectively), whereas shrimps and mollusks had lower importance in the diet (%IRI = 1.9 and 0.4, respectively). As previously reported for dusky grouper populations inhabiting reefs and rocky bottoms, the present work revealed conspicuous size related dietary shifts. Blue crabs and fishes become increasingly important food items in the diet of larger individuals (> 500 mm, TL). Finally, it was found that the studied dusky population has a generalist feeding strategy with a high between-individual variation in prey consumption. Such strategy remained similar across the size increment of the species. Our findings suggest that man-made rocky substrates provide suitable feeding grounds for the dusky grouper in southern Brazil and could be used as an additional tool in the conservation efforts of this endangered species.

Several studies have described the effectiveness of vegetated buffer strips, interposed between the cultivated areas and water bodies, in removal of suspended solids and other pollutants such as Glyphosate conveyed through surface runoff. This monitoring study has quantified the effects of a 5-metre wide herbaceous buffer zone, adjacent to a vineyard, built according to the Standard 5.2 of Cross-compliance (M.D. 27417). The amount of runoff generated was 3.9% of the total annual rainfall, with negligible differences in terms of volume after flowing through the buffer zone. The effectiveness of the buffer zone in suspended solids removal was, in terms of mass balance, of 45.5%. The glyphosate outputs from the vineyard, unlike in other experiences, were negligible and therefore it was not possible to evaluate the efficiency of the buffer zone in removing it. This is due to the low rainfall occurred in the period following distribution that has favoured <em>in situ</em> degradation of Glyphosate.

The natural rise-husk charcoal was made by burned in a furnace at 230 °C. Carboxylic group (-COOH) was functionalized onto the charcoal by using oxalic acid in situ process. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and morphology by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) demonstrated that the COOH-group was successfully functionalized on the charcoal and the particles were porous. The COOH-activated charcoal was applied for liming effluent treatment through a filtration media. Eight environmental load parameters was determined by the standard method. The results were compared with the standard permissible limits set by Inland Surface Water-Bangladesh Standards (ISW–BDS-ECR, 1997). It has been observed that the rice husk based activated carbons dramatically reduce the pollutants to permissible level. The removal efficiency of pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Biological Oxygen Demand in 5 days at 20 °C (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen demand (COD), Total Alkalinity, S2- from liming effluent up to 40.0%, 85.89%, 98.8%, 81.32%, 96.74%, 78.6%, 97.15% and 79.61% respectively. In conclusion, the liming effluent simply recycled by filtration process and can be used for industrial purpose.

Abstract. Ammonia (NH3) is a major source of nitrates in the atmosphere and a major source of fine particulate matter. As such, there have been increasing efforts to measure the atmospheric abundance of NH3 and its spatial and temporal variability. In this study, long-term measurements of NH3 derived from multiscale datasets are examined. These NH3 datasets include 16 years of total column measurements using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, 3 years of surface in situ measurements, and 10 years of total column measurements from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI). The datasets were used to quantify NH3 temporal variability over Toronto, Canada. The multiscale datasets were also compared to assess the representativeness of the FTIR measurements. All three time series showed positive trends in NH3 over Toronto: 3.34 ± 0.89 %/yr from 2002 to 2018 in the FTIR columns, 8.88 ± 5.08 %/yr from 2013 to 2017 in the surface in situ data, and 8.38 ± 1.54 %/yr from 2008 to 2018 in the IASI columns. To assess the representative scale of the FTIR NH3 columns, correlations between the datasets were examined. The best correlation between FTIR and IASI was obtained with coincidence criteria of ≤25 km and ≤20 min, with r=0.73 and a slope of 1.14 ± 0.06. Additionally, FTIR column and in situ measurements were standardized and correlated. Comparison of 24 d averages and monthly averages resulted in correlation coefficients of r=0.72 and r=0.75, respectively, although correlation without averaging to reduce high-frequency variability led to a poorer correlation, with r=0.39. The GEOS-Chem model, run at 2∘ × 2.5∘ resolution, was compared to FTIR and IASI to assess model performance and investigate the correlation of observational data and model output, both with local column measurements (FTIR) and measurements on a regional scale (IASI). Comparisons on a regional scale (a domain spanning 35 to 53∘ N and 93.75 to 63.75∘ W) resulted in r=0.57 and thus a coefficient of determination, which is indicative of the predictive capacity of the model, of r2=0.33, but comparing a single model grid point against the FTIR resulted in a poorer correlation, with r2=0.13, indicating that a finer spatial resolution is needed for modeling NH3.

Tidung Island, located near Jakarta Bay, is a tourism and conservation area. It is necessary to keep these seawaters unpolluted. To calculate the level of pollution, it is necessary to know the sediment concentration. Quantifying concentration suspended sediment is important for knowledge of sediment transport. Researchers usually use water sample analysis and optical method for quantifying suspended sediment in seawater. Less accuracies of these methods are due to under sample of seawater and the existence of biological fouling. One promising method to measure concentration of suspended sediment is using Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). ADCP is usually used by oceanographer and hydrographer to measure ocean current. In this research, ADCP with 300 kHz operating frequency was used effectively to measure suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and ocean current simultaneously. The echo intensity received from suspended sediment was computed using sonar equations to quantify SSC. The empirical equation between echo intensity and SSC was found. The SSC value obtained by ADCP was also compared with in situ measurement. The result showed that quantified SSC value obtained by ADCP was nearly equal with SSC obtained from in situ measurement with coefficient correlation of 0.98. The high concentration ranged from 55 mg/L to 80 mg/L at the surface layer to a depth 12 m, moderate concentration ranged from 45 mg/L to 55 mg/L at a depth 12 m to 40 m, and low concentration less than 45 mg/L at a depth greater than 40 m. The distribution of SSC was correlated with ocean current condition. In small currents, suspended solids will settle faster so that the concentration in the water column will decrease. Conversely, if the velocity is high, suspended solids will continue to float carried by the current in the water column so that the concentration is high.

Three calibration methods were applied to UV/VIS spectra recorded in the influent of six wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to measure total COD (CODtot), filtered COD (CODfil), nitrate and nitrite nitrogen (NOx-N) and total suspended solids (TSS). It could be shown that a calibration of the sensor using data sets from four Swiss WWTPs leads to an improvement of the precision in comparison to the global calibration provided by the manufacturer. A calibration to the specific wastewater matrix always improves the results and gives the highest accuracy. For CODtot a mean coefficient of variation CVx of 12.5% could be reached, whereas for NOx-N only weak results were achieved (average CVx=36%).
