Sand mining in an active alluvial channel can compromise the streambed stability of the hydraulic structures nearby. This experimental study is aimed at investigating the effects of rectangular mining pit on the morphodynamics around circular tandem piers in a movable bed. A rectangular pit is excavated upstream of two circular piers embedded in the sand-bed in a tandem arrangement. The results are then compared to a case having only the piers without any mining pit. Turbulent stresses and mean velocities in the near-bed region rise significantly at the upstream region of the piers in the presence of a pit. Also, stronger flow reversal and horseshoe vortices have been detected at the base of the pier front. Due to these alterations in the nature of turbulence, erosion of channel beds upstream of the piers, increased scour depths, scour volume, and lateral erosion of the scour hole have been observed. Dynamic evolution of the local scour at various time scales has been studied using a wavelet cross-correlation method. Spatial evolution of local scour is found to be faster when a pit is excavated in the channel. Thus, mining activities near the piers can lead to significant changes in the flow-field, causing excessive scour around piers.

Large wood (LW) in rivers increases the flow variability and provides habitats for various species. During flood events, transported logs can accumulate at river infrastructures and increase the flood hazard. LW accumulations result in an upstream backwater rise and may increase local scour, for instance at bridge piers. Consequently, estimates of the resulting backwater rise and local scour are necessary to improve the flood hazard assessment. This study presents the findings of flume experiments with a movable bed on local scour and backwater rise due to LW accumulations. The approach flow conditions and the bed material were varied systematically for a specific LW accumulation volume. For all experiments, the initial condition for the bed material was defined as weak transport, since the bed shear stress was slightly below the critical bed shear stress for incipient motion. The inflow Froude number was identified as the governing parameter for backwater rise due to LW accumulations. The present study confirms the hypothesis that the resulting local scour reduces backwater rise. For the local scour, the unit discharge and the grain size diameter are the decisive parameters.

As the HREM becomes increasingly used for the study of dynamic localized phenomena, the development of techniques to recover the desired information from a real image is important. Often, the important features are not strongly scattering in comparison to the matrix material in addition to being masked by statistical and amorphous noise. The desired information will usually involve the accurate knowledge of the position and intensity of the contrast. In order to decipher the desired information from a complex image, cross-correlation (xcf) techniques can be utilized. Unlike other image processing methods which rely on data massaging (e.g. high/low pass filtering or Fourier filtering), the cross-correlation method is a rigorous data reduction technique with no a priori assumptions.We have examined basic cross-correlation procedures using images of discrete gaussian peaks and have developed an iterative procedure to greatly enhance the capabilities of these techniques when the contrast from the peaks overlap.

In this paper, we propose a novel gesture recognition system based on a smartphone. Due to the limitation of Channel State Information (CSI) extraction equipment, existing WiFi-based gesture recognition is limited to the microcomputer terminal equipped with Intel 5300 or Atheros 9580 network cards. Therefore, accurate gesture recognition can only be performed in an area relatively fixed to the transceiver link. The new gesture recognition system proposed by us breaks this limitation. First, we use nexmon firmware to obtain 256 CSI subcarriers from the bottom layer of the smartphone in IEEE 802.11ac mode on 80 MHz bandwidth to realize the gesture recognition system’s mobility. Second, we adopt the cross-correlation method to integrate the extracted CSI features in the time and frequency domain to reduce the influence of changes in the smartphone location. Third, we use a new improved DTW algorithm to classify and recognize gestures. We implemented vast experiments to verify the system’s recognition accuracy at different distances in different directions and environments. The results show that the system can effectively improve the recognition accuracy.

We propose a new cross-correlation method that can recognize independent realizations of the same type of stochastic processes and can be used as a new kind of pattern recognition tool in biometrics, sensing, forensic, security and image processing applications. The method, which we call bispectrum correlation coefficient method, makes use of the cross-correlation of the bispectra. Three kinds of cross-correlation coefficients are introduced. To demonstrate the new method, six different random telegraph signals are tested, where four of them have the same power density spectrum. It is shown that the three coefficients can map the different stochastic processes to specific sub-volumes in a cube.
