Without appropriate conservation action, coral reefs globally continue to degrade, causing declines in economic value. Therefore, their local conservation and quantifying its benefits become increasingly important. However, accurately measuring these values remains expensive or complicated. Leveraging digital survey tools, an interdisciplinary on-line survey was created to estimate willingness to pay (WTP) for coral reef conservation using pictures and ecological data. Using the contingent valuation method we estimate current values as well as changes in value due to restoration or degradation for coral ecosystems in the Kenting National Park (KNP) in Taiwan. Results suggest that conserving degraded coral reef ecosystems leads to larger gains in value than healthier ones. Average WTP estimates a non-market economic value of 680 million US$ per year for the whole KNP marine area. Despite potential self-reporting bias and limits on sample size, these values appear consistent with similar studies and suggest future economic sampling strategies for KNP.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the economic value of Geomun Oreum (GO), a parasitic volcanic sieve, for sustainable management by using the dichotomous choice contingent valuation method. To address the exaggeration tendency of willingness to pay (WTP), the contingent valuation method’s (CVM’s) traditional threshold, respondents’ WTP answers were reconfirmed to screen only true responses for our analysis. In addition to estimating the economic value, the causal relationship between the tour guide’s quality of explanation and the respondents’ payment intention is examined in the study. The results reveal that the estimated preservation value of GO is 35,881 KRW (33.28 USD), and the quality of the tour guide’s narrative is statistically related to the respondents’ payment intention.

This paper reports on a survey carried out among visitors to Etosha, Namibia, in May 2002. We use the contingent valuation method to estimate foreign tourists willingness to pay for visiting the park. We find that the Namibian government could raise park fees substantially and increase profits from foreign tourists by approximately N$ 2,3 million per year. If fees were raised in collusion with other governments, in order to avoid competition between countries in the region, profits could presumably be increased even further. However, the survey used to collect data on tourists willingness to pay also indicated dissatisfaction with current management of in-park resorts, and improved management of these resorts would probably be crucial for the success of any new tariff scheme.

Deep-sea corals, also called cold-water corals, provide a variety of ecosystem services, including habitat for numerous species and being a source of biodiversity. Despite their importance, these ecosystems are under threat because of trawling and exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons. According to the gap analysis conducted by the Institute of Marine and Coastal Research of Colombia (Invemar), during the first decade of the XXI century in Colombia, less than 2% of the known deep coral coverage was found under some category of conservation inside the System of National Natural Parks. In 2013, the Corales de Profundidad National Natural Park was established, and it is located in the Colombian Caribbean Sea, next to the departments of Córdoba, Sucre and Bolivar, close to the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park. The biological knowledge of these ecosystems is new, as well as the importance of these ecosystems expressed in economic and social terms. Carrying out an exercise that captures the economic value of ecosystem services provided by deep-sea corals in the new national park becomes relevant. The objective of this study is to make a first approach to estimate this value. Given the difficulty of accessing these ecosystems, the benefits provided by them are not directly tangible and are not revealed through markets. In fact, the provided services are related to benefits not associated with direct use (non-use values, such as option and existence values, and indirect use values). Stated preference methods are used to estimate the economic value associated with this type of services; with these methods the strategy is to create a hypothetical scenario and ask respondents to reveal their willingness to pay for the feasibility of these conservation scenarios. The contingent valuation method is the chosen one, whose main instrument for information collection is household surveys. The average estimated willingness to pay per household is around US$58 (110000 COP using the average exchange rate for the third quarter of 2014, when data was collected, COP/USD: 1878) per year. Based on these results, it is possible to calculate the willingness to pay for the entire population of the study, Bogotá citizens. This value is around US$95 million annually (178 billion COP per year). When this value is compared with the budget assigned to this national park, the latter represents less than 1% of the economic value associated with the flow of benefits generated by the park. The lack of resources assigned to this area becomes evident as well as the need to identify and implement alternative funding sources to ensure financial sustainability of the park

Economic Value of Medicinal Plants in Danau Sentarum National Park, West KalimantanDanau Sentarum National Park (DSNP) is a conservation area which has an important role in people’s lives and society Kapuas Hulu in West Kalimantan. The objective of this study was to estimate the value of medicinal plants in the area TNDS. Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) with a single bounded was use to determine the willingness to pay for medicine plants. Data collected through direct interviews with 90 local households in DSNP using a questionnaire. Data analysis was done with MS. Excel® and SPSS® statistical software. The results show the variable value of the bid, income, age, education, and knowledge of medicinal plants significantly aect the value of WTP. Analisis data dilakukan dengan perangkat lunak MS Excel® dan SPSS®. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan variabel nilai tawaran bid, pendapatan, usia, pendidikan, dan pengetahuan mengenai tanaman obat secara signifikan memengaruhi nilai WTP. Nilai dugaan WTP adalah sebesar Rp50.354,22 sampai Rp72.312,44 per keluarga per bulan.

Abstract. Authors. 2019. Economic valuation of the Danau Sentarum National Park, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1983-1989. The Danau Sentarum ecosystem in West Kalimantan, Indonesia is officially protected by its status as an Indonesian national park. Nevertheless, it remains under severe threat of deforestation. Rainforest destruction has already caused a decline in ecosystem functions and services. In addition, it is affecting numerous economic activities in and around the Danau Sentarum National Park. The objectives of this study are to determine the total economic value (TEV) of the Danau Sentarum National Park and look for appropriate mechanisms to realize such values. Survey methods were used in this research. 180 respondents were selected by random sampling method from three Management Section National Park (MSNP). TEV in this research was restricted on direct use value, indirect use value and option value. Estimation of DSNP ecosystem benefits was approached by market price, travel cost method, contingent valuation method, and opportunity cost adjusted for the benefits calculated. The direct use value of Danau Sentarum National Park is IDR 18.5 billion/year while the indirect use value of Danau Sentarum National Park is IDR 34.2 billion/year. The option value of Danau Sentarum National park is IDR 86.2 billion/year. The total economic value resulted in Danau Sentarum National Park is IDR 139,1 billion/year, equivalent to an average of IDR 1.1 million/year for the total park area (132,000 ha). When compared to the TEV of the DSNP, such costs amounted to only 4.87 percent compared to the value of the benefits Based on monetary values of ecosystem services that are provided by this park we could assess the mechanisms to finance the park’s conservation and sustainable use. This will help the self-management of national parks.

AbstractThis study is an application of cultural heritage valuation using non-market methods. Contingent Valuation Method used to measure the amount of economic value by estimating willingness to pay from Surabaya residents. The economic value of the Old Town Area of Surabaya if there were improvementanddevelopment of heritage tourism is Rp. 1.471.764 billion.This value is greater than before improvement and development that is only Rp. 3.914.892.240. Multinomial logit regression was used to identify factors that affect the interest to visit and willingness to pay for the respondent. Results indicates that age, education, income, and knowledge significantly influence the interest to visit and willingness to pay. Therefore, it is necessary to encourage the development of heritage tourism, having regard to the determination of stakeholder and policy priorities.The method used in the determination of stakeholder and policy priorities is the Analytic Hierarchy Process.Overall, the use of three methods provide complete results so it can be a reference in the field of cultural heritage research and advice in the development of heritage tourism, especially in the old city area of Surabaya.Keywords: economic valuation, multinomial logistic regression, contingent valuation method, analythical hierarchy process.
