In order to investigate the drag-reducing effect of air intake, forward motion of planing trimaran models in calm water were simulated for Froude numbers ranging from 3.14–5.87. The hull body motion is implemented by coupling the fluid solver with motion solver. Numerical results were compared with the experimental data and showed good agreement. Contrastive calculations of models with and without air intake show that the air intake presents evident drag-reducing effect when Froude number is above 4.49, the cambered configuration of air intake could amplify air cavity and thus decrease fractional resistance. CFD incremental studies were subsequently carried out for the camber of air intake, it is found that the model with chamber-shortened air intake shows the worst resistance performance, while enlarging air intake chamber could reduce resistance at Froude numbers between 4.06 and 4.97.

The hydrodynamic characteristics of the planing hulls in particular at the planing regime are completely different from the conventional hull forms and the determination of these characteristics is more complicated. In the present study, calm water hydrodynamic characteristics of planing hulls are investigated using a hybrid method. The hybrid method combines the dynamic trim and sinkage from the Zarnick approach with the Savitsky method in order to calculate the total resistance of the planing hull. Since the obtained dynamic trim and sinkage values by using the original Zarnick approach are not in good agreement with experimental data, an improvement is applied to the hybrid method using a reduction function proposed by Garme. The numerical results obtained by the hybrid and improved hybrid method are compared with each other and available experimental data. The results indicate that the improved hybrid method gives better results compared to the hybrid method, especially for the dynamic trim and resistance. Although the results have some discrepancies with experimental data in terms of resistance, trim and sinkage, the improved hybrid method becomes appealing particularly for the preliminary design stage of the planing hulls.

Abstract The application of the systematic procedures in the derivation of the equations of motion proposed in Part I of this work is demonstrated and implemented in detail. The equations of motion for each subsystem are derived individually and are assembled under the concept of compatibility between the local kinematic properties of the elastic degrees of freedom of those connected elastic members. The specific structure under consideration is characterized as an open loop system with spherical unconstrained chains being capable of rotating about a Hooke’s or universal joint. The rigid body motion, due to two unknown rotations, and the elastic degrees of freedom are mutually coupled and influence each other. The traditional motion superposition approach is no longer applicable herein. Numerical examples for several cases are presented. These simulations are compared with the experimental data and good agreement is indicated.

The accurate prediction of the track of a ship maneuvering in a seaway is one of the most important tasks in seakeeping. Most ship maneuvering studies, both experimental and numerical, focus on maneuvering in calm water. Recently, Lin and Klamo (2010) used the Digital Self-consistent Ship Experimental Laboratory (DiSSEL) to study the ship track of a turning circle maneuver in a wave field. In that study, it was shown that their simulated ship trajectories had good agreement with experimentally measured tracks. This agreement motivated the following quantitative analysis of the experimental data to characterize the effects that wave impacts have on turning circle ship tracks. Our method involves describing the ship trajectories as sinusoids with time-varying means. We also estimate the uncertainty in the results from our analysis of the experimental measurements. The quantitative analysis shows overall agreement with Lin and Klamo (2010). New findings are also discussed such as changes in the distance and time to complete the maneuver as well as the speed and preferred directions of a drifting turning circle.

In the current hydrodynamic research relating to planing hulls, the stern flap and steps are generally considered to be two independent resistance reduction measures. Limited research has focused on the coupled effects of flaps and steps. Therefore, experimental and numerical simulation methods are carried out in this paper to explore the influence of the flap mounting angle coupled with the steps. A series of model towing tests were implemented for a double-stepped planing hull with 2°, 3° and 4.5° flap angles. The test results show that, as the mounting angle increased, the low speed resistance performance was improved and the porpoising critical speed was delayed, with a slight resistance cost. Based on the tests, a numerical simulation method was established with volume Froude numbers ranging from 0.88 to 5.20. The simulated hull flow field showed good agreement with the testing data. The simulation results suggest a cavity induces the negative pressure after the steps; the cavity core region is the air phase, and this expands with the air–water mixture flow. The cavity also causes wetted surface reduction and pressure distribution changes. Finally, comparisons of cavities after-steps and load coefficients of different planing surfaces among models were considered. Numerical results analysis gave distinct interpretations for the experimental phenomenon of porpoising critical speed increasing with a slight resistance increment.

A number of theoretical predictions of the wave-resistance coefficient of the Wigley hull are compared with one another and with available experimental data, to which corrections for sinkage and trim are applied. The averages of eleven sets of experimental data (corrected for sinkage and trim) and of eleven sets of theoretical results for large values of the Froude number, specifically for F 0.266, 0.313, 0.350, 0.402, 0.452, and 0.482, are found to be in fairly good agreement, in spite of considerable scatter in both the experimental data and the numerical results. Furthermore, several sets of theoretical results are fairly close to the average experimental data and the average theoretical predictions for these large values of the Froude number. Discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental measurements for small values of the Froude number, specifically for F = 0.18, 0.20, 0.22, 0.24, and 0.266, generally are much larger than for the above-defined high-Froude-number range. However, a notable exception to this general finding is provided by the first-order slender-ship approximation evaluated in Chen and Noblesse [1],3 which is in fairly good agreement with the average experimental data over the entire range of values of Froude number considered in this study.

A two-layer long-wave approximation of the homogeneous Euler equations for a free-surface flow evolving over mild slopes is derived. The upper layer is turbulent and is described by depth-averaged equations for the layer thickness, average fluid velocity and fluid turbulent energy. The lower layer is almost potential and can be described by Serre–Su–Gardner–Green–Naghdi equations (a second-order shallow water approximation with respect to the parameter $H/L$, where $H$ is a characteristic water depth and $L$ is a characteristic wavelength). A simple model for vertical turbulent mixing is proposed governing the interaction between these layers. Stationary supercritical solutions to this model are first constructed, containing, in particular, a local turbulent subcritical zone at the forward slope of the wave. The non-stationary model was then numerically solved and compared with experimental data for the following two problems. The first one is the study of surface waves resulting from the interaction of a uniform free-surface flow with an immobile wall (the water hammer problem with a free surface). These waves are sometimes called ‘Favre waves’ in homage to Henry Favre and his contribution to the study of this phenomenon. When the Froude number is between 1 and approximately 1.3, an undular bore appears. The characteristics of the leading wave in an undular bore are in good agreement with experimental data by Favre (Ondes de Translation dans les Canaux Découverts, 1935, Dunod) and Treske (J. Hydraul Res., vol. 32 (3), 1994, pp. 355–370). When the Froude number is between 1.3 and 1.4, the transition from an undular bore to a breaking (monotone) bore occurs. The shoaling and breaking of a solitary wave propagating in a long channel (300 m) of mild slope (1/60) was then studied. Good agreement with experimental data by Hsiao et al. (Coast. Engng, vol. 55, 2008, pp. 975–988) for the wave profile evolution was found.

Stability of a high-speed craft is an essential matter, and porpoising is one of the most critical instabilities that could occur in some planing hulls due to inappropriate design. In this paper, the porpoising phenomenon and variation of step location yielding resistance reduction are studied through experimental and numerical methods. The investigated models include a single-step model and a nonstep model with the same general shape, but with different step location. The nonstep model is previously tested, but the single-step model is examined in the present study. The nonstep model experiences porpoising at 8 m/s speed, but the single-step model remains stable at the same speed. A three-dimensional CFD analysis is conducted using the finite volume method (FVM). On the contrary, the volume of fluid (VOF) scheme is used for free surface modeling, and the overset mesh technique is implemented within StarCCM+ software. The CFD results of total hydrodynamic resistance and dynamic trim angle are compared against the experimental data. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Subsequently, ten different stepped models are simulated to examine their effects. The longitudinal distance between steps and aft of these models are in the range of 19 to 50 percent of the length of models. The obtained results show that as steps are located farther than aft, the models become more stable, and resistance increases due to trim reduction. Finally, the optimum location of the step is extracted with the aim of minimizing the resistance through the design of experiment (DOE) method. Based on the DOE method, it is observed that the sensitivity of the drag value to the step location is higher than the speed.

The energy states for the J , b , ɤ bands and electromagnetic transitions B (E2) values for even – even molybdenum 90 – 94 Mo nuclei are calculated in the present work of "the interacting boson model (IBM-1)" . The parameters of the equation of IBM-1 Hamiltonian are determined which yield the best excellent suit the experimental energy states . The positive parity of energy states are obtained by using IBS1. for program for even 90 – 94 Mo isotopes with bosons number 5 , 4 and 5 respectively. The" reduced transition probability B(E2)" of these neuclei are calculated and compared with the experimental data . The ratio of the excitation energies of the 41+ to 21+ states ( R4/2) are also calculated . The calculated and experimental (R4/2) values showed that the 90 – 94 Mo nuclei have the vibrational dynamical symmetry U(5). Good agreement was found from comparison between the calculated energy states and electric quadruple probabilities B(E2) transition of the 90–94Mo isotopes with the experimental data .

Abstract An analytical tool is presented for the prediction of the effects of changes in tread pattern design on thick film wet traction performance. Results are reported for studies in which the analysis, implemented on a digital computer, was used to determine the effect of different tread geometry features, among these being the number, width, and lateral spacing of longitudinal grooves and the angle of zigzags in longitudinal grooves, on thick film wet traction. These results are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data appearing in the literature and are used to formulate guidelines for tread groove network design practice.

In this paper we derived a new condition of formation and stability of all crystalline systems and we checked its validity andit is found to be in a good agreement with experimental data. This condition is derived directly from the quantum conditionson the free electron Fermi gas inside the crystal. The new condition relates both the volume of Fermi sphere VF andvolume of Brillouin zone VB by the valence electron concentration VEC as ;𝑽𝑭𝑽𝑩= 𝒏𝑽𝑬𝑪𝟐for all crystalline systems (wheren is the number of atoms per lattice point).
