The classic orifice equation is commonly used to calculate the leakage and intrusion rate for pressurized pipelines with cracks on the pipe wall. The conventional orifice equation does not consider the effect of the flow velocity in the main pipe, and there is a lack of studies on this matter. For this technical note, the influence of the main pipe flow velocity on the outflow and inflow through a crack on the pipe wall was studied in the laboratory. The experimental results show that the impact of the main pipe flow velocity can be significant. When the pressure difference across the orifice was constant, with the increase of the main pipe flow velocity, the outflow velocity increased, but the contraction area of the jet and the outflow discharge coefficient decreased. By comparing orifices with different shapes, it was found that the discharge from the circumferential crack was most sensitive to the main pipe flow velocity. In addition, the main pipe flow promoted the orifice inflow. When the pressure difference across the orifice was constant, with the increase of the main pipe flow velocity, the inflow discharge coefficient increased, which is the opposite pattern to that of the orifice outflow.

In this study, a new image calibration approach is presented that corrects arbitrary optical distortions by utilizing non-parametric, 3D disparity fields. A calibration plate with a high spatial resolution (i.e., high density of calibration marks) was used to identify optical distortions that remain after the initial calibration, which were then used to create a correction field for the pinhole or polynomial mapping functions. Results from a pipe flow experiment with four cameras using volume self-calibration (VSC) and Shake-the-Box Lagrangian particle tracking (STB LPT) are presented and the impact of the improved calibration is discussed. Using the calibration marks with the correction field, distortions of initially more than 20 pixels are reduced below 1 pixel. Using VSC with the correction field allows further reduction of average calibration disparities below 0.02 pixels (maximum 0.5 pixels), whereas without a correction field the remaining average disparity is much higher at 1 pixel (maximum 5 pixels). STB analysis of the data shows a considerable higher spatial resolution at the pipe wall and a consistent spatial distribution of the number of detected particles in the measurement volume.

Abstract. An automatic workflow to measure surface flow velocities in rivers is introduced, including a Python tool. The method is based on particle-tracking velocimetry (PTV) and comprises an automatic definition of the search area for particles to track. Tracking is performed in the original images. Only the final tracks are geo-referenced, intersecting the image observations with water surface in object space. Detected particles and corresponding feature tracks are filtered considering particle and flow characteristics to mitigate the impact of sun glare and outliers. The method can be applied to different perspectives, including terrestrial and aerial (i.e. unmanned-aerial-vehicle; UAV) imagery. To account for camera movements images can be co-registered in an automatic approach. In addition to velocity estimates, discharge is calculated using the surface velocities and wetted cross section derived from surface models computed with structure-from-motion (SfM) and multi-media photogrammetry. The workflow is tested at two river reaches (paved and natural) in Germany. Reference data are provided by acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements. At the paved river reach, the highest deviations of flow velocity and discharge reach 4 % and 5 %, respectively. At the natural river highest deviations are larger (up to 31 %) due to the irregular cross-section shapes hindering the accurate contrasting of ADCP- and image-based results. The provided tool enables the measurement of surface flow velocities independently of the perspective from which images are acquired. With the contactless measurement, spatially distributed velocity fields can be estimated and river discharge in previously ungauged and unmeasured regions can be calculated, solely requiring some scaling information.

Pipe flow responds to strong perturbations in ways that are fundamentally different from the response exhibited by boundary layers undergoing a similar perturbation, primarily because of the confinement offered by the pipe wall, and the need to satisfy continuity. We review such differences by examining previous literature, with a particular focus on the response of pipe flow to three different kinds of disturbances: the abrupt change in surface condition from rough to smooth, the obstruction due to presence of a single square bar roughness elements of different sizes, and the flow downstream of a streamlined body-of-revolution placed on the centerline of the pipe. In each case, the initial response is strongly influenced by the pipe geometry, but far downstream all three flows display a common feature, which is the very slow, second-order recovery that can be explained using a model based on the Reynolds stress equations. Some future directions for research are also given.

Abstract. Predicting air pollution events in low atmosphere over megacities requires thorough understanding of the tropospheric dynamic and chemical processes, involving notably, continuous and accurate determination of the boundary layer height (BLH). Through intensive observations experimented over Beijing (China), and an exhaustive evaluation existing algorithms applied to the BLH determination, persistent critical limitations are noticed, in particular over polluted episodes. Basically, under weak thermal convection with high aerosol loading, none of the retrieval algorithms is able to fully capture the diurnal cycle of the BLH due to pollutant insufficient vertical mixing in the boundary layer associated with the impact of gravity waves on the tropospheric structure. Subsequently, a new approach based on gravity wave theory (the cubic root gradient method: CRGM), is developed to overcome such weakness and accurately reproduce the fluctuations of the BLH under various atmospheric pollution conditions. Comprehensive evaluation of CRGM highlights its high performance in determining BLH from Lidar. In comparison with the existing retrieval algorithms, the CRGM potentially reduces related computational uncertainties and errors from BLH determination (strong increase of correlation coefficient from 0.44 to 0.91 and significant decrease of the root mean square error from 643 m to 142 m). Such newly developed technique is undoubtedly expected to contribute to improve the accuracy of air quality modelling and forecasting systems.

The following technical note demonstrates full-scale staircase test results of the pressure differential system improvement method described by Fryda et al. in 2021. It is a continuation of experimental research on the impact of the escape route’s leakages on the pressure differential systems for staircases. Based on the lab experiments, it has been found that an additional throttle of the leak implemented in the pressure differential system improves its effectiveness and allows it to be more precisely adjusted to the required overpressure. The results presented in this article have confirmed this hypothesis and provided the opportunity to apply for new patent solutions of a special throttle of the leak control and pressure regulating system. The proposed new leakage-based improvements could increase the efficiency of existing systems based on proportional-integral-derivative controller and could also be installed in new buildings.

Swirling combustion is currently one of the most important engineering problems in physics of combustion. There is a hypothesis on the increase in the combustion efficiency of reacting gas mixtures in combustion chambers with swirling flows, as well as on the increase in the efficiency of fuel combustion devices. In this paper, it is proposed to simulate a swirling flow by taking into account the angular component of the flow velocity. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of the angular component of the flow velocity on the characteristics of the flow and combustion of an air suspension of coal dust in a pipe. The problem is solved in a twodimensional axisymmetric approximation with allowance for a swirling flow. A physical and mathematical model is based on the approaches of the mechanics of multiphase reacting media. A solution method involves the arbitrary discontinuity decay algorithm. The impact of the flow swirl and the size of coal dust particles on the gas temperature distribution along the pipe is determined.

A numerical investigation of the propulsion performance and hydrodynamic characters of the full-active flapping foil under time-varying freestream is conducted. The finite volume method is used to calculate the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes by commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software Fluent. A mesh of two-dimensional (2D) NACA0012 foil with the Reynolds number Re = 42,000 is used in all simulations. We first investigate the propulsion performance of the flapping foil in the parameter space of reduced frequency and pitching amplitude at a uniform flow velocity. We define the time-varying freestream as a superposition of steady flow and sinusoidal pulsating flow. Then, we study the influence of time-varying flow velocity on the propulsion performance of flapping foil and note that the influence of the time-varying flow is time dependent. For one period, we find that the oscillating amplitude and the oscillating frequency coefficient of the time-varying flow have a significant influence on the propulsion performance of the flapping foil. The influence of the time-varying flow is related to the motion parameters (reduced frequency and pitching amplitude) of the flapping foil. The larger the motion parameters, the more significant the impact of propulsion performance of the flapping foil. For multiple periods, we note that the time-varying freestream has little effect on the propulsion performance of the full-active flapping foil at different pitching amplitudes and reduced frequency. In summary, we conclude that the time-varying incoming flow has little effect on the flapping propulsion performance for multiple periods. We can simplify the time-varying flow to a steady flow field to a certain extent for numerical simulation.

We have studied the influence of a tangential blowing jet in dynamic stall of a NACA0012 airfoil at Reynolds number of 1 × 106, for active flow control (AFC) purposes. The airfoil was oscillating between angles of attack (AOA) of 5 and 25 deg about its quarter-chord with a sinusoidal motion. We have utilized computational fluid dynamics to investigate the impact of jet location and jet velocity ratio on the aerodynamic coefficients. We have placed the jet location upstream of the counter-clockwise (CCW) vortex which was formed during the upstroke motion near the leading-edge; we have also considered several other locations nearby to perform sensitivity analysis. Our results showed that placing the jet slot within a very small range upstream of the CCW vortex had tremendous effects on both lift and drag, such that maximum drag was reduced by 80%. There was another unique observation: placing the jet at separation point led to an inverse behavior of drag hysteresis curve in upstroke and downstroke motions. Drag in downstroke motion was significantly lower than upstroke motion, whereas in uncontrolled case the converse was true. Lift was significantly enhanced during both upstroke and downstroke motions. By investigating the pressure coefficients, it was found that flow control had altered the distribution of pressure over the airfoil upper surface. It caused a reduction in pressure difference between upper and lower surfaces in the rear part, while substantially increased pressure difference in the front part of the airfoil.

The object of the study is a section of the gas and gas condensate collection system, consisting of an angle throttle installed on a xmas tree and a well piping located after the angle throttle. The aim of the study is to assess the impact of the flow velocity and wall shear stress (WSS) on the carbon dioxide corrosion rate in the area of interest and to come up with substantiated recommendations for the rational operation of the angle throttle in order to reduce the corrosion intensity. In the course of solving this problem, a technique was developed and subsequently applied to assess the influence of various factors on the rate of carbon dioxide corrosion. The technique is based on a sequence of different modeling methods: modeling the phase states of the extracted product, three-dimensional (solid) modeling of the investigated section, hydrodynamic flow modeling of the extracted product using the finite volume method, etc. The developed technique has broad possibilities for visualization of the obtained results, which allow identifying the sections most susceptible to the effects of carbon dioxide corrosion. The article shows that the average flow velocity and its local values are not the factors by which it is possible to predict the occurrence of carbon dioxide corrosion in the pipeline section after the angle throttle. The paper proves that WSS has prevailing effect on the corrosion intensity in the section after the angle choke. The zones of corrosion localization predicted according to the technique are compared with the real picture of corrosion propagation on the inner surface of the pipe, as a result of which recommendations for the rational operation of the angle throttle are formed.
