The ELI-NP (Extreme Light Intensity—Nuclear Physics) project, developed at the Horia Hulubei National Institute for RD in Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH), has included one component dedicated to the study of interactions between brilliant gamma-ray and matter, with applications in nuclear physics and the science of materials. The paper is focused on the interaction chamber, an important part of the facility which hosts the experiment’s samples. The interaction chamber is endowed with a mobile sample support (holder), which automatically tracks the γ-ray beam. The γ-ray radiation source presents a slight variation of the direction of the emitted radiation in time. The built system ensures the permanent collimation between the γ-ray beam and the sample that is being investigated. This is done with two electric motors, which have a symmetrical movement with respect to the center of a rectangle. The specific measures taken by the design and implementation that permit to reach performances of tracking system are emphasized in the paper. The methodology considers the relative displacement between the detectors with which the laboratory is equipped and the absolute position in space of the sample boundary. The control of this motion is designed to respect the symmetry of the system. Both facets of the project (hardware and software) are detailed, emphasizing the way in which the designers ensured compliance with the system of real-time operation conditions of the tracking and monitoring system.

Ocean in-situ sensors are crucial for measuring oceanic parameters directly from the sea in a spatial and temporal basis. Real-time operation is used in many applications related to decision support tools and early warning services in case of accidents, incidents and/or disasters. The design of the proposed system is described as a rapid-response detection system, which aims to measure natural and artificial radioactive contaminants or other crucial ocean parameters, to replace the traditional method of sampling. The development of an interactive cellular system is undertaken using a commercial router that is programmed according to sensor specifications. A radioactivity sensor is integrated in a communication box enabling self-powered operation with a solar panel. The proposed system operates in (near) real-time mode and provides gamma-ray spectra by integrating the sensor and the appropriate electronic modules in it. Additionally, an on-site experiment was conducted to test the operability of the system in a real environment close to the sea, for monitoring fallout due to rainfall and snowfall events. The main intense radionuclides that were observed by different energy lines, were radon progenies (214Bi, 214Pb). The continuous operation of the whole system was controlled by operating the system during the winter period.

It was well known that abnormal burden quality has a significant impact on the blast furnace (BF) permeability resulting in bad slag flowability and HM tapping, and the coke fines inside BF become much finer to reduce HM production and BF life when the coke strength is weak. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the real-time operation indices of the slag flowability and coke strength after reaction (CSR) in a lower part of BF. BF slag flowability was determined with liquidus temperature and viscosity from measured semi-synthetic slags (SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-TiO2), and the effects of MgO content, Al2O3 content and CaO/SiO2 on slag flowability are investigated according to the model equations derived from above measured data by using multiple-regression method. A real-time index combined with viscosity and liquidus temperature has been also designed to indicate appropriate slag flowability. In addition, a coke sampler was used to collect the coke samples at tuyere level to analyze the strength of BF bosh coke at various HM productivities. CSR quantitative target and its online index were obtained from the data of sampling coke properties, BF operation conditions and BF permeability to provide real-time reference for coke and HM production.

The ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) experiment at CERN will upgrade its Inner Tracking System (ITS) detector. The new ITS will consist of seven coaxial cylindrical layers of ALPIDE silicon sensors which are based on Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) technology. We have studied the radiation hardness of ALPIDE sensors using a 30 MeV proton beam provided by the cyclotron U-120M of the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Řež. In this paper, these long-term measurements will be described. After being irradiated up to the total ionization dose 2.7 Mrad and non-ionizing energy loss 2.7 × 10 13 1 MeV n eq · cm - 2 , ALPIDE sensors fulfill ITS upgrade project technical design requirements in terms of detection efficiency and fake-hit rate.

This paper proposes an action recognition framework for depth map sequences using the 3D Space-Time Auto-Correlation of Gradients (STACOG) algorithm. First, each depth map sequence is split into two sets of sub-sequences of two different frame lengths individually. Second, a number of Depth Motion Maps (DMMs) sequences from every set are generated and are fed into STACOG to find an auto-correlation feature vector. For two distinct sets of sub-sequences, two auto-correlation feature vectors are obtained and applied gradually to L2-regularized Collaborative Representation Classifier (L2-CRC) for computing a pair of sets of residual values. Next, the Logarithmic Opinion Pool (LOGP) rule is used to combine the two different outcomes of L2-CRC and to allocate an action label of the depth map sequence. Finally, our proposed framework is evaluated on three benchmark datasets named MSR-action 3D dataset, DHA dataset, and UTD-MHAD dataset. We compare the experimental results of our proposed framework with state-of-the-art approaches to prove the effectiveness of the proposed framework. The computational efficiency of the framework is also analyzed for all the datasets to check whether it is suitable for real-time operation or not.

The Caltech imaging γ-ray telescope was launched by balloon from Alice Springs, NT, Australia and performed observations of the galactic center during the period 12.62 to 13.00 April 1988 UT. The first coded-aperture images of the galactic center region at energies above 30 keV show a single strong γ-ray source which is located 0.7±0.1° from the galactic nucleus and is tentatively identified as 1E1740.7-2942. If the source is at the distance of the galactic center, it is one of the most luminous objects in the galaxy at energies from 35 to 200 keV.

Gamma-ray spectroscopy associated to the clear identification of the emitting nuclei is a key to understand in a coherent way the nuclear structure of the elements located far from stability. The coupling of very efficient gamma-ray arrays and spectrometers has pushed away the limits and opened up new possibilities in nuclear physics studies. These combinations give access to a comprehensive picture of both the reaction mechanism and the nuclear structure of a given nucleus. In this talk, the various possibilities offered at GANIL with such a coupling will be given.
