In recent years, numerous attempts have been made to enhance the living standard for old-aged people. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is an evolving interdisciplinary field aimed at the exploitation of knowledge and communication technology in health and tele-monitoring systems to combat the impact of the growing aging population. AAL systems are designed for customized, responsive, and predictive requirements, requiring high performance of functionality to ensure interoperability, accessibility, security, and consistency. Standardization, continuity, and assistance of system development have become an urgent necessity to meet the increasing needs for sustainable systems. In this article, we examine and address the methods of the different AAL systems. In addition, we analyzed the acceptance criteria of the AAL framework intending to define and evaluate different AAL-based symmetrical models, leveraging performance characteristics under the integrated fuzzy environment. The main goal is to provide an understanding of the current situation of the AAL-oriented setups. Our vision is to investigate and evaluate the potential symmetrical models of AAL systems and frameworks for the implementation of effective new installations.

Smart Spaces, Ambient Intelligence, and Ambient Assisted Living are environmental paradigms that strongly depend on their capability to recognize human actions. While most solutions rest on sensor value interpretations and video analysis applications, few have realized the importance of incorporating common-sense capabilities to support the recognition process. Unfortunately, human action recognition cannot be successfully accomplished by only analyzing body postures. On the contrary, this task should be supported by profound knowledge of human agency nature and its tight connection to the reasons and motivations that explain it. The combination of this knowledge and the knowledge about how the world works is essential for recognizing and understanding human actions without committing common-senseless mistakes. This work demonstrates the impact that episodic reasoning has in improving the accuracy of a computer vision system for human action recognition. This work also presents formalization, implementation, and evaluation details of the knowledge model that supports the episodic reasoning.

Ambient assisted living technologies could support people experiencing physical or cognitive challenges, to maintain social identities and complex activities of daily living. Although there has been substantial investment in developing ambient assisted living innovation, less effort has been devoted to understanding how to evaluate the impact of ambient assisted living on physical and mental health. Taking a theory-based evaluation approach, we suggest firstly that ambient assisted living technologies rely on networks of people and organizations to function, and secondly, analysing the changing structure of networks can bridge the gap between socio-technological change and individual-level capabilities. We present conceptual arguments for taking a network perspective in ambient assisted living evaluations, illustrated with examples from our own group’s work on technology use among older people with cognitive impairments. We then discuss the different types of network-based evaluation approaches available, their theoretical assumptions, and the sort of research questions they could address.

Smart environments have proven very supportive to the improvement of the performance of people in different workplaces. Plenty of applications have been introduced spanning different settings including healthcare, ambient assisted living, homes, offices, and manufacturing environment, etc. However, subjectivity and ambiguity prevail in the majority of research, and still, up to date, rare approaches found quantitatively and objectively constructing or assessing the impact of smart enabling technologies on the performance of the subject environment. Further, no approaches have considered optimizing the adoption of those smart technologies with respect to objectives achievement. This article presents a novel optimization methodology for designing a smart workplace environment in conditions of ambiguity or fuzziness. The methodology begins with defining and weighing the overall goals and objectives of the workplace. The Prometthe multi-criterion decision-making technique is used to weigh the operational objectives with respect to the overall workplace goals. Next, the relation among basic building blocks of the model; namely: the operational objectives, smartness features, and smart enabling technologies are quantified, utilizing fuzzy relations. Then, the fuzzy goal programming techniques will be utilized to optimize the impact relation values while considering the budget constraint. The proposed optimization methodology is implemented on the development and optimization of the smart clinic, as a typical instance of the workplace.

The chapter summarizes the authors' development on the concept of “at-home lab” (AHL). The concept employs the methods of artificial intelligence (AI), smart internet of things (IoT) technologies, and data mining techniques. The aim is at support for patients with Parkinson's disease and aged people to continuously monitor and evaluate their motor and cognitive status using own smartphone (in particular, IMU as wearable sensor, apps for testing cognitive status, camera for motor tracking). In addition, other devices in the IoT environment can participate in creating the information assistance support for people. This chapter presents and discuss the AHL concept as a further development step of AI in respect with human evolution (NeoNeoCortex). The focus is on evolutionary, environmental, and biological aspects of AI.

Ambient Assisted Living is an important subject to be explored and developed, especially in developed countries, due to the increasing number of aged people. In this context the development of mechatronic support systems for bedridden elderly people (BEP) living in their homes is essential in order to support independence, autonomy and improve their quality of life. Some basic tasks as eating, taking a bath and/or hygiene cares become difficult to execute, regarding that often the main caregiver is the other element of the aged couple (husband or wife). This paper presents the conceptual design of a mechanical system especially devoted to assist the caregiver in the handling and repositioning of the BEP. Issues as reducing the number of caregivers, to only one, and reducing the system's handling complexity (because most of the time it will be used by an aged person) are considered. The expertise obtained from the visits to rehabilitation centers and hospitals, and from working meetings, are considered in the development of the proposed mechatronic system.

Abstract The analysis of electrical load signatures is an enabling technology for many applications, such as ambient assisted living or energy-saving recommendations. Through the digitalization of electricity metering infrastructure, meter reading intervals are gradually becoming more frequent than the traditional once-per-year reporting. In fact, across smart meter generations, samples were initially reported in 15-min intervals, more recently once per second, and even newer devices capture readings at rates on the order of several kilohertz. The advantages of using such high sampling rates have, however, not been unambiguously demonstrated in literature. We thus choose a widely considered application scenario of energy data analytics, event detection, and assess the impact of the sampling rate choice on the correct event recognition rate. More specifically, we compare the accuracy of two event detection algorithms with respect to the resolution of their input data. The results of our analysis hint at a non-linear relation between accuracy and data resolution, yet also indicate that most event occurrences can be correctly determined when using a sampling rate of approximately 1 kHz, with only minimal improvements achievable through higher rates.

PurposeThe authors analyse the impact of European funding research programmes on the topic of Ambient Assisted Living by considering its status, future context, and the implications for prospective knowledge management.Design/methodology/approachThe authors apply our variation of classical Systematic Literature Review – Systematic Literature Network Analysis, which also includes bibliographic networks – to identify the readership cliques of the associated technological publication outputs.FindingsThe authors’ main conclusion suggests that there was an increase in scientific production on AAL fields just after the start of the two EU funding programmes (2008 and 2014). Three main research directions were identified: activity and vital sign recognition, human-computer interaction and technology acceptance.Originality/valueTo date, previous reviews on Ambient Assisted Livig focus on specific aspects, such as the study of technology. The present review provides a complete overview of Ambient Assisted living technology and it grasps how the European funds have impacted on the development of this technology.
