Mass media not only reflect the activities of state bodies but also shape the informational context, sentiment, depth, and significance level attributed to certain state initiatives and social events. Multilateral and quantitative (to the practicable extent) assessment of media activity is important for understanding their objectivity, role, focus, and, ultimately, the quality of the society’s “fourth power”. The paper proposes a method for evaluating the media in several modalities (topics, evaluation criteria/properties, classes), combining topic modeling of the text corpora and multiple-criteria decision making. The evaluation is based on an analysis of the corpora as follows: the conditional probability distribution of media by topics, properties, and classes is calculated after the formation of the topic model of the corpora. Several approaches are used to obtain weights that describe how each topic relates to each evaluation criterion/property and to each class described in the paper, including manual high-level labeling, a multi-corpora approach, and an automatic approach. The proposed multi-corpora approach suggests assessment of corpora topical asymmetry to obtain the weights describing each topic’s relationship to a certain criterion/property. These weights, combined with the topic model, can be applied to evaluate each document in the corpora according to each of the considered criteria and classes. The proposed method was applied to a corpus of 804,829 news publications from 40 Kazakhstani sources published from 01 January 2018 to 31 December 2019, to classify negative information on socially significant topics. A BigARTM model was derived (200 topics) and the proposed model was applied, including to fill a table of the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) and all of the necessary high-level labeling procedures. Experiments confirm the general possibility of evaluating the media using the topic model of the text corpora, because an area under receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC AUC) score of 0.81 was achieved in the classification task, which is comparable with results obtained for the same task by applying the BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) model.

Purpose In an effort to explain the high level of scepticism and distrust towards marketing and marketers, this paper aims to explore how marketing practice and practitioners are depicted in the mass media. Design/methodology/approach The paper analyses 6,877 news reports that discuss “marketing” across two one-year time periods from three UK newspapers. A systematic content analysis is presented through N-grams and K-grams, close readings of individual cases and manual coding. Findings The paper finds that the news media cultivates an image of marketing and marketing practitioners as a cost to businesses and something that businesses do to consumers. The study finds that marketers are also presented through a narrow viewpoint. Marketers are depicted as male and tend to be viewed as a source of authority only when speaking on behalf of their organizations in response problems and crises. Research limitations/implications The cultivation effect of mass media is widely accepted among communications scholar, yet its use within marketing research is limited. The paper represents an empirical application of this approach. Practical implications Organizations including the Chartered Institute of Marketing and American Marketing Association have attempted to counteract marketing’s image problem by redefining what marketing means. The results of this study suggest that such attempts are unlikely to work, as the practice of marketing, in particular PR, cultivates a negative image in the media. Social implications The paper explores the relationship between marketing practice and the marketing profession and society. Originality/value The paper demonstrates the utility of cultivation theory and systematic content analyses of media texts. It develops a methodology to examine how professional practice is depicted in mass media.

Over the last decades, scholars have reported a high level of xenophobia in Russia, which persists and spreads amidst all strata of the population. This shows the significance of the migration issue in the country and its topicality in the public discourse. However, the explanatory models used to analyze the perception of immigrants in Western countries do not find absolute empirical support in Russia. For this reason, researchers emphasize the importance of media discourse as a leading factor in constructing attitudes toward the foreign migrants in Russia. We take into account, firstly, the persistence of xenophobic attitudes among Russians, and secondly — the role of the migrants’ image, constructed by mass media, in shaping the perception of the immigrants among the locals. In this regard, this article hypothesizes that despite the official ban of the “hate language” and ethnization of crime, the negative representation of immigrants not only persists in the Russian media discourse, but is unfortunately increasing. To test this hypothesis, we utilize the results of research on the representation of immigration in Russian media discourse published between 2010 and 2020, which we analyze in the methodological framework of critical discourse analysis. We conclude that at the end of the current decade, there have been certain improvements in the media coverage of the migration issue, caused by the shift of the spotlight onto other problems, thus, the negative images of immigrants simply were not a part of the media agenda. On the one hand, this can help reduce ethnic tensions, although on the other, it complicates the development of the culture of interaction between the local and immigrant communities, since the national and cultural characteristics of migrants and their experience of living in Russia remain underrepresented in the media.

Abstract Computational models using text corpora have proved useful in understanding the nature of language and human concepts. One appeal of this work is that text, such as from newspaper articles, should reflect human behaviour and conceptual organization outside the laboratory. However, texts do not directly reflect human activity, but instead serve a communicative function and are highly curated or edited to suit an audience. Here, we apply methods devised for text to a data source that directly reflects thousands of individuals’ activity patterns. Using product co-occurrence data from nearly 1.3-m supermarket shopping baskets, we trained a topic model to learn 25 high-level concepts (or topics). These topics were found to be comprehensible and coherent by both retail experts and consumers. The topics indicated that human concepts are primarily organized around goals and interactions (e.g. tomatoes go well with vegetables in a salad), rather than their intrinsic features (e.g. defining a tomato by the fact that it has seeds and is fleshy). These results are consistent with the notion that human conceptual knowledge is tailored to support action. Individual differences in the topics sampled predicted basic demographic characteristics. Our findings suggest that human activity patterns can reveal conceptual organization and may give rise to it.

This article wants to see how the representation of mass media in Surakarta, namely Solopos and Joglosemar, in the case of the establishment of Religion by Basuki Cahaya Purnama (Ahok). The method used is Theo van Leuwen's critical discourse analysis which focuses on how actors are inclusion and exclusion in media news. The results of this study explain that: (1) Pos Solo sided with Ahok. Ahok is excluded (omitted, blurred from narrative text) when it comes to negative information and vice versa, inclusion (made clear) if positive news information for Ahok. (2) Joglosemar also seems to support Ahok. Joglosemar uses exclusion and passivation techniques. The use of these two techniques is done while giving "profit" to Ahok. (3) there are three factors that influence framing, construction and media representation that make the media appear to support Ahok, namely: 1). The Surakarta factor as the basis of the nationalist party, Factor Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Factor of media owners. These factors ultimately impacted on the news related to the blasphemy case carried out by Ahok where the media tended to defend Ahok.

The article presents the structure of the media in the Trans-Baikal Territory. The elements of the media system include leading information agencies, television channels, periodicals, determined by the media rating in the Trans-Baikal Territory. The mass media presented in the model have different technical and technological properties allowing them to represent the interests of various social and age groups. Taking into account the interests of the maximum number of the media product consumers makes it possible to assess the overall level of awareness of the population about the events and facts of regional social and economic development, which, in the authors' view, should be considered an indicator of the regional media effectiveness. The significance of this indicator is determined by the participation of the media in the formation of values, political views, moral and ethical guidelines and motives of the population. In this context, an evaluation of the overall performance of the system and partial performance indicators of its elements is an important management task. At the same time, the task is complicated because of the lack of a generally accepted system of indicators for assessing the processes of creating and transmitting information, as well as tools for their convolution. In accordance with the purpose of the study, the authors proposed a system of indicators for assessing the factors that determine the effectiveness of the processes of creating information products at each of the media in the region, as well as indicators of the overall effectiveness of the media system of the region. Given the differences in technologies for creation and transmission of information products, the authors solved the problem of comparability of indicators and data. At the stage of obtaining integral estimates, the problem of the convolution of the obtained indicators arose. To solve the problem of convolution, the apparatus of fuzzy logic and fuzzy logic inference was used. The obtained estimates revealed a high level of awareness of the population of the Trans-Baikal Region about the events, facts and processes of regional socio-economic development. The evaluation algorithm presented in the work allows one not only to assess the overall level of effectiveness of the regional media system, but also to compare the media systems of different regions, and to monitor the activities of individual media enterprises. The principal moment of practical application of the proposed algorithm is the possibility of building on its basis a computer expert system that allows to automate the calculations and the formation of an information base.

Mass media is one of the most important elements influencing the information environment of society. The mass media is not only a source of information about what is happening but is often the authority that shapes the information agenda, the boundaries, and forms of discussion on socially relevant topics. A multifaceted and, where possible, quantitative assessment of mass media performance is crucial for understanding their objectivity, tone, thematic focus and, quality. The paper presents a corpus of Kazakhstan media, which contains over 4 million publications from 36 primary sources (which has at least 500 publications). The corpus also includes more than 2 million texts of Russian media for comparative analysis of publication activity of the countries, also about 4000 sections of state policy documents. The paper briefly describes the natural language processing and multiple-criteria decision-making methods, which are the algorithmic basis of the text and mass media evaluation method, and describes the results of several research cases, such as identification of propaganda, assessment of the tone of publications, calculation of the level of socially relevant negativity, comparative analysis of publication activity in the field of renewable energy. Experiments confirm the general possibility of evaluating the socially significant news, identifying texts with propagandistic content, evaluating the sentiment of publications using the topic model of the text corpus since the area under receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC AUC) values of 0.81, 0.73 and 0.93 were achieved on abovementioned tasks. The described cases do not exhaust the possibilities of thematic, tonal, dynamic, etc., analysis of the considered corpus of texts. The corpus will be interesting to researchers considering both multiple publications and mass media analysis, including comparative analysis and identification of common patterns inherent in the media of different countries.
