This paper aimed to use the symmetry that exists to the body of a guitar to ease the analysis behavior to vibrations. Symmetries can produce interesting properties when studying the dynamic and steady-state response of such systems. These properties can, in some cases, considerably decrease the effort made for dynamic analysis at the design stage. For a real guitar, these properties are used to determine the eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Finite element method (FEM) is used for a numerical modeling and to prove the theoretically determined properties in this case. In this paper, different types of guitar plates related to symmetrical reinforcement patterns were studied in terms of modal analysis performed using finite element analysis (FEA). The dynamic response differs in terms of amplitude, eigenvalues, modal shapes in accordance with number and pattern of stiffening bars. In this study, the symmetrical and asymmetric modes of modal analysis were highlighted in the case of constructive symmetrical structures.

Abstract AFO (Ankle-Foot Orthosis), which covers the ankle and foot, protects and supports the ankle joint as well as the structures around it. It contributes to the maintenance of the correct gait cycle. Owing to orthoses, the functional capacity of the body part is significantly improved, and so is the quality of life for the user. Personalized orthoses, which are adapted to the anatomy of the user, are more and more often produced by the additive methods. The use of 3D printing for the manufacturing medical devices is becoming increasingly common due to the low cost of the whole process, short production time and the possibility of the product personalization. One of the stages in manufacturing AFOs with the additive method is to create a three-dimensional model of the orthosis in CAD software. Finite element analysis was performed to assess the mechanical properties of the orthosis. The influence of geometry and the materials used were investigated with FEM analysis software. As a result of structural analysis during the design stage, the assessment of the medical device in terms of its durability and mechanical resistance without putting the user at risk is possible. On the basis of the obtained results, the structure strength was compared.

Abstract This paper reports on the application of Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) technique in vibration measurement of turbine blading. Using the time-averaged mode of ESPI, the first six modes of a turbocharger blade with airfoil profile were identified. The effect of the complicated profile of the blade was established by studying simplified model blades. Coupled modes were identified and successfully separated. Experimental results are compared with those obtained using finite element analysis.

Abstract An inverse finite element (FE) algorithm is proposed for sheet forming process simulation. With the inverse finite element analysis (FEA) program developed, a new method for concurrent engineering (CE) design for sheet metal forming product and process is proposed. After the product geometry is defined by using parametric patches, the input models for process simulation can be created without the necessity to define the initial blank and the geometry of tools, thus simplifying the design process and facilitating the designer to look into the formability and quality of the product being designed at preliminary design stage. With resort to a commercially available software, P3/PATRAN, arbitrarily three-dimensional product can be designed for manufacturability for sheet forming process by following the procedures given.

A computational technique of rigid-plastic finite element method by using the Eulerian meshing method was developed to deal with large deformation problem in metal forming by replacing the conventional way of applying complicated remeshing schemes when using the Lagrange’s elements. During metal forming process, a workpiece normally undergoes large deformation and causes severe distortion of elements in finite element analysis. The distorted element may lead to instability in numerical calculation and divergence of non-linear solution in finite element analysis. With Eulerian elements, the initial elements are generated to fix into a specified analytical region with particles implanted as markers to form the body of a workpiece. The particles are allowed to flow between the elements after each deformation step to show the deforming pattern of material. Four types of cold forging and sheet metal clinching were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the presented method. The proposed method is found to be effective by comparing the results on dimension of the final product, material flow behaviour and punch load versus stroke obtained from simulation and experiment.

In order to improve the modeling efficiency for finite element analysis pre-processing, a parametric modeling method of underground powerhouse for finite element analysis is proposed. By inputting the basic geometric parameters, different types of underground powerhouse models are built by using this method. The basic ideas, basic principle and the process of this parametric modeling are presented. And the parametric modeling procedure is coded by using VC++, interactive interface and display window are designed by using MFC and OpenGL. Finite element model of Houziyan underground powerhouse which is built by using the procedure proves that this method greatly improves the efficiency and precision of modeling.
