In China, cross-track high-speed trains (CTHSTs) play an important role in railway passenger transportation, with an increasing number of cross-track passengers sourced from the expansion of high-speed railway (HSR) network. The CTHST generally has long travel times, so running CTHSTs is not beneficial for train rescheduling work and plan’s periodicity in the periodic operation context. Thus, the main challenge in cross-track line planning is looking for a symmetry point between passenger transportation and disadvantages of running CTHSTs, which are two conflicting aspects. In this study, we developed a multiobjective integer programming model to produce a balanced cross-track line plan by combining individual-track high-speed trains (ITHSTs) into CTHSTs, which is a discrete optimization problem. This strikes a balance among four goals: the periodicity of the line plan, CTHST quantity, CTHST mileage, and CTHST stops in the context of periodic operation, while satisfying the constraints of passenger demand and the number of available ITHSTs. Numerical experiments are conducted based on a real-world network and optimal solutions were quickly obtained. We analyzed impacts of each goal and parameter on the result and influencing factors of computation. Comparisons with existing methods and real-life plans were also presented to show improvements made by proposed model.

Overnight high-speed trains are very popular and convenient for passengers in countries with a large territory like China. However, the overnight high-speed train operation inevitably conflicts with the regular evening maintenance. We focus on both overnight high-speed train scheduling and maintenance planning to eliminate the conflict. Because some of the daytime high-speed trains that run early in the morning or late in the evening also interact with overnight high-speed trains and maintenance, we also allow them to be to slightly rescheduled to improve both the quality of the overnight train timetable and the maintenance plan. Our integrated optimization problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming model, which can be solved efficiently by the commercial solver CPLEX. Finally, we validate our model on a large real-world case constructed based on the Beijing–Guangzhou high-speed railway line in China.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to generate line plan in emergencies for railway networks to complete the passenger transportation. Design/methodology/approach – The authors first build a mathematical model, focusing on the frequency setting and stops setting. Then, considering the OD passenger flow data, the authors first propose the method to solve the train frequency setting problem of different types. Genetic algorithm is designed to solve the stops setting problem. The approach is tested with the data from Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway and its neighbour existing railway. Findings – The authors find that the model is suitable to generate line plan in emergencies for railway networks and the algorithm has good calculating performance. Originality/value – The new algorithms to generate line plan proposed in this paper can be embedded in the decision support system for railway operators.

The design and durability of high-speed railway lines is a major challenge in the field of railway transportation. In France, 40 years of feedback on the field behavior of ballasted tracks led to improvements in the design rules. However, the settlement and wear of ballast, caused by dynamic stresses at high frequencies, remains a major problem on high-speed tracks leading to high maintenance costs. Studies have shown that this settlement is linked to the high acceleration produced in the ballast layer by high-speed trains traveling on the track, disrupting the granular assembly. The “Bretagne–Pays de la Loire” high-speed line (BPL HSL), with its varied subgrade conditions, represents the first large-scale application of asphalt concrete (GB) as the ballast sublayer. This line includes 77 km of conventional track with a granular sublayer of unbound granular material (UGM) and 105 km of track with an asphalt concrete sublayer under the ballast. During construction, instruments such as accelerometers, anchored deflection sensors, and strain gages, among others, were installed on four sections of the track. This paper examines the instrumentation as well as the acquisition system installed on the track. The data processing is explained first, followed by a presentation of the ViscoRail software, developed for modeling railway tracks. The bituminous section’s behavior and response is modeled using a multilayer dynamic response model, implemented in the ViscoRail software. A good match between experimental and calculated results is highlighted.

The optimization problems of train timetabling and platforming are two crucial problems in high-speed railway operation; these problems are typically considered sequentially and independently. With the construction of high-speed railways, an increasing number of interactions between trains on multiple lines have led to resource assignment difficulties at hub stations. To coordinate station resources for multiline train timetables, this study fully considered the resources of track segments, station throat areas, and platforms to design a three-part space-time (TPST) framework from a mesoscopic perspective to generate a train timetable and station track assignment simultaneously. A 0-1 integer programming model is proposed, whose objective is to minimize the total weighted train running costs. The construction of a set of incompatible vertexes and links facilitates the expression of difficult constraints. Finally, example results verify the validity and practicability of our proposed method, which can generate conflict-free train timetables with a station track allocation plan for multiple railway lines at the same time.

With the rapid development of high-speed railway in China, the aerodynamic brake is very likely to be an important emergency braking mode of high-speed train in the future. This paper takes aerodynamic braking wing as the object, and uses the finite element software to divide the meshes, then analyses the model influenced by static stress. After simulating the vibratory frequency response of the model in the flow field, it finds that the largest deformation happens in the middle of the upper edge of the wind wing, when the wind speed gets to 500km/h and the load frequency to 4Hz. Some conclusions of this thesis can provide reference for researching the applying the aerodynamic brake in the high-speed trains and laying the foundation for solving the riding and braking safety problems.

With the increasingly demand for reliable mobile communication service in the high-speed railway (HSR) system, the service stability of HSR communication is of great concern in recent research. Focusing on ensuring the quality of services (QoS) and system throughput, massive multi-input multi-output (massive MIMO) and beamforming technologies have been widely applied. In this paper, aiming to minimize the communication outage probability (OP) and not to decrease spectrum efficiency (SE) too much, we propose a fast HBF (F-HBF) scheme for HSR communications. The proposed scheme uses a low-complexity beam-searching algorithm to trace high-speed trains in real time. The simulation results verify that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce OP without too much SE degradation.

Deformations of high-speed railways accumulate over time and affect the geometry of the track, thus affecting the running safety of trains. This article proposes a new method to map the relationship between dynamic responses of high-speed trains and additional bridge deformations. A train–track–bridge coupled model is established to determine relationship between the dynamic responses (e.g. accelerations and wheel–rail forces) of the high-speed trains and the track deformations caused by bridge pier settlement, girder end rotation, and girder camber. The dynamic responses are correlated with the track deformation. The mapping relationship between bridge deformations and running safety of trains is determined. To satisfy the requirements of safety and riding comfort, the suggested upper thresholds of pier settlement, girder end rotation, and girder camber are 22.6 mm, 0.92‰ rad, and 17.2 mm, respectively. This study provides a method that is convenient for engineers in evaluation and maintenance of high-speed railway bridges.
