Basing on the relevant researches for sustainable development, this paper constructed the evaluated indicators system, and then gave an evaluation for the sustainable development ability in 31 provinces of China. The results showed that the comprehensive score of each province had a great difference; the top provinces are Shanghai, Beijing; the last provinces are Gansu and Guizhou and so on; the eastern coastal regions had strong sustainable development ability, and the midwest regions had weak sustainable development ability.

Human survival depends on the sustainable development of agriculture. This study constructs a data-driven evaluation and optimization method of agricultural sustainable development capacity, aiming to better cope with challenges such as environmental pollution and excessive consumption of resources and energy, as well as improve agricultural economic level. Further, an evaluation index system was constructed based on comprehensive consideration of energy and resources utilization, environmental pollution, and agricultural economy. After simplifying and integrating the data, a data envelopment analysis model was constructed to quantitatively evaluate the capability for agricultural sustainable development and its changing trend. Moreover, its influencing factors were analyzed from the perspective of input, which provides accurate countermeasures for improving agricultural sustainable development ability, resource utilization efficiency, and process optimization. This study shows the realization process of the aforementioned method for the agricultural development of six cities in northern Anhui from 2010 to 2019. Our results suggest that the sustainable development ability of northern Anhui is weak, but overall, has a good development trend. Based on our results, some countermeasures were proposed to control production scale reasonably, reduce environmental load, and improve resource efficiency, which provides a reference for policymakers to guide and standardize the development of regional agriculture.

Abstract Continuously improving freshwater aquaculture efficiency will help promote the sustainable development of freshwater aquaculture, which is crucial to ensure fish food supply. In particular, finding ways to improve the freshwater aquaculture efficiency, by measuring and analyzing the total factor productivity (TFP) of freshwater aquaculture, is of great significance to the sustainable development of freshwater aquaculture industry. Therefore, this paper constructs a meta-frontier Malmquist index (MMI) model by considering the regional heterogeneity to evaluate the TFP of freshwater aquaculture of China from 2004 to 2019. The results show that: (1) From 2004 to 2019, the TFP of freshwater aquaculture shows dynamic fluctuations and spatial differences. Compared with coastal regions, there are obvious advantages in TFP of freshwater aquaculture in inland regions. (2) The change of TFP in freshwater aquaculture is driven by the combined effect of technology change (TC) and technical efficiency change (EC). (3) The technology gap in freshwater aquaculture of coastal regions is tiny, while that of inland regions is large. This paper finally gives some policy suggestions to improve the TFP to ensure the sustainable development of freshwater aquaculture.

Sustainable development of a region is considered as stable development, balanced in the economic, social and environmental areas. To achieve sustainable development of a coastal region, it is necessary to cover the entire integral geosystem, including land territory of the region and the adjacent sea area. It is necessary to model dynamics of the geosystem using various information and geographic information systems. On this basis, strategic planning and monitoring of the sustainable development should be employed. Basic core principle for the sustainable development of coastal regions is a regional nature management, including usage of the natural resources of land, sea and ocean. At the same time, it is necessary to identify and evaluate aqua-territorial combinations of the natural resources and inter-resource ties. There are some problems and limitations of the sustainable development of coastal regions, which are highlighted, including dangerous processes and phenomena (wave, tsunami, typhoons, etc.), the need for coastal protection, etc., as well as favorable factors - availability of various marine natural resources, possibility of using sea transport and availability of sea markets, etc.

The sustainable development of the human settlements (HS) has become a global universal program. The comparison of cities in different countries is of great significance to provide international experience for future urban construction. Combined with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this paper establishes an evaluation index system for the sustainable development ability of urban HS and constructs a three-dimensional research framework of “development-coordination-sustainability,” which compares the sustainable development ability of the HS of Dalian, China, and Kobe, Japan, from 2005 to 2018 and explores the spatial evolution characteristics and obstacle factors of the HS of the two cities. The results show that (1) the development degree of the HS of the two cities is on the rise. The development level of Kobe is always higher than that of Dalian, and the gap is gradually narrowing; Kobe has advantages in natural and residential environment, while Dalian has advantages in cultural and economic environment. (2) The coordination degree of the development of the HS of the two cities has improved steadily, and the coordination degree of Kobe is better than that of Dalian. (3) The sustainability of the development of the HS of the two cities is fluctuating, and the average sustainable growth rate of Dalian is higher than that of Kobe. (4) The sustainable development space of the HS in Dalian presents a pattern of “high in the south and low in the north,” and the spatial characteristics of the subsystems are different; the main obstacles have changed from economic-natural to economic-natural-cultural-public services, and the obstacles to development in districts are different. (5) The sustainable development space of the HS in Kobe has a high level of development in the southeast, radiating to the surrounding area, and the spatial characteristics of the subsystems are different; the main obstacles have changed from economic-cultural-natural to economic-natural-population, and the obstacles to development in districts are different. Finally, it puts forward targeted suggestions for the sustainable construction of Dalian. This paper can provide methodological reference for quantitative assessment of the sustainable development of HS and provide policy reference for scientific planning of the construction of HS.

Based on the resource-based cities, we could establish a comprehensive evaluation index system. Principal component analysis (PCA) model is perfect to such evaluation. It can eliminate the related influence between evaluation indexes and reduce the workload of evaluation. The paper applied the principal component analysis to Baotou city and other 5 western resource-based cities so as to make a comprehensive evaluation about sustainable development ability. The results show that the sustainable development ability of Baotou city from2003 to 2012 is a fluctuated improving trend. And it ranks fourth in the selected western resource-based cities. The issue about the way to improve the sustainable development ability of resource-based cities is discussed in this paper.

A quantitative analysis of input-output status and sustainable development status of agro-ecosystem in Fuyang City was conducted by using the method of ecological emergy analysis in this paper. The results showed that the ESI of agro-ecosystem in Fuyang city was 5.31 in 2010, comparing with its neighboring provinces and cities, the sustainable development ability of agricultural ecology of Fuyang City was in a middle level.
