This study explores the use of electrostatic cleaning to remove dust from the surface of photovoltaic solar panels. First of all, existing systems used for dust removal from solar panels were evaluated. Then, the effects of dust on the panel were investigated for Şanlıurfa province in Turkey. In addition, the elemental content of the powder was analyzed. A new device for electrostatic cleaning has been designed and implemented. The cleaning performance of this device has been tested considering the electrode designs. The electric field value was determined by analytical and numerical methods in the conventional model (parallel electrode) model. Electric field distribution was investigated using Ansys Maxwell simulation software. The printed circuit boards of the proposed model and the conventional model were produced. The traditional model with positive and negative waveform is widely used in electrostatic cleaner studies. Dust removal efficiencies and electrical losses for different frequency and voltage values were compared for both cards. It has been shown that the proposed model can perform cleaning with high efficiency despite similar loss variation.

A modeling of a turbo air compressor system (TACS), with a multi-level inverter for driving variable speed, combining an electrical model of an electric motor drive system (EMDS) and a mechanical model of a turbo air compressor, is essential to accurately analyze dynamics characteristics. Compared to the mechanical model, the electrical model has a short sampling time due to the high frequency switching operation of the numerous power semiconductors inside the multi-level inverter. This causes the problem of increased computational time for dynamic characteristics analysis of TACS. To solve this problem, the conventional model of the multi-level inverter has been proposed to simplify the switching operation of the power semiconductors, however it has low accuracy because it does not consider pulse width modulation (PWM) operation. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved modeling of the multi-level inverter for TACS to reduce computational time and improve the accuracy of electrical and mechanical responses. In order to verify the reduced computational time of the proposed model, the conventional model using the simplified model is compared and analyzed using an electronic circuit simulation software PSIM. Then, the improved accuracy of the proposed model is verified by comparison with the experimental results.

Model was developed for the prediction of polarization characteristics in a dielectric material exhibiting piezoelectricity and electrostriction based on mathematical equations and MATLAB computer simulation software. The model was developed based on equations of polarization and piezoelectric constitutive law and the functional coefficient of Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) crystal material used was 2.3×10-6 m (thickness), the model further allows the input of basic material and calculation of parameters of applied voltage levels, applied stress, pressure, dielectric material properties and so on, to generate the polarization curve, strain curve and the expected deformation change in the material length charts. The mathematical model revealed that an application of 5 volts across the terminals of a 2.3×10-6 m thick dielectric material (PZT) predicted a 1.95×10-9 m change in length of the material, which indicates piezoelectric properties. Both polarization and electric field curve as well as strain and voltage curve were also generated and the result revealed a linear proportionality of the compared parameters, indicating a resultant increase in the electric field yields higher polarization of the dielectric materials atmosphere.

The objective of this work was to propose and evaluate a model to estimate transit water losses and surface runoff in a Brazilian semi-arid basin, fundamental components in the hydrological studies of the region, such as in the verification of hydrological connectivity. The study area was the Orós Reservoir Basin, located in the state of Ceará. The modeling of transit water loss and surface runoff were developed based on the work of Araújo and Ribeiro (1996) and Peter et al. (2014). In the proposed model, the parameter of loss in transit (k) was estimated at 0.027 km-1 for a section of the river basin, and when simulated for other stretches it provided good flow results at the end of the stretch, obtaining an NSE of 82%. The value of the runoff coefficient was estimated at 3% and when evaluating a spatial variation of this coefficient in the basin, the values varied from 2% to 12%, and the use of specialized runoff coefficient (RC) values promoted a higher NSE in the discharge simulation in the basin. It is concluded that the proposed model to estimate transit water losses and surface runoff demonstrated a high efficiency in the simulation of hydrological processes. The basin of Orós reservoir presented a high variability of the coefficient of surface runoff, justifying the need for a greater spatiality of this coefficient in heterogeneous environments.

AbstractThis paper presents experimental studies on the optimization of air–water flow in an airlift pump. Airlift pumps use compressed gas to verticall transport liquids and slurries. Due to the lack of theoretical equations for designing and predicting flow regimes, experimental investigations must be carried out to find the best condition to operate an airlift pump at high efficiency. We used a new air injection system and different submergence ratios to evaluate the output of a simple pump for vertical displacement of water in an underground mine. The tests were carried out in a new device with 5.64 m height and 10.2 cm circular riser pipe. Three air-jacket pipes, at different gas flows in the range of 0.002–0.09 m3/s were investigated with eight submergence ratios. It was found that with the same air flow rate, the most efficient flow of water was achieved when an air jacket with 3 mm diameter holes was used with a submergence ratio between 0.6 and 0.75. In addition, a comparison of practical results with two theoretical models proposed by other investigators showed that neither was able to accurately predict airlift performance in air–water flow mode.

TiO2 is popular in photocatalytic degradation dye pollutants due to its abundance and its stability under photochemical conditions. Au loaded TiO2 can achieve efficient absorption of visible light and deal with the problem of low conversion efficiency for solar energy of TiO2. This work presents a new strategy to prepare Au nanoparticles-loaded TiO2 composites through electric−field−assisted temporally−shaped femtosecond laser liquid-phase ablation of Au3+ and amorphous TiO2. By adjusting the laser pulse delay and electric field parameters, gold nanoparticles with different structures can be obtained, such as nanospheres, nanoclusters, and nanostars (AuNSs). AuNSs can promote the local crystallization of amorphous TiO2 in the preparation process and higher free electron density can also be excited to work together with the mixed crystalline phase, hindering the recombination between carriers and holes to achieve efficient photocatalytic degradation. The methylene blue can be effectively degraded by 86% within 30 min, and much higher than the 10% of Au nanoparticles loaded amorphous TiO2. Moreover, the present study reveals the crystallization process and control methods for preparing nanoparticles by laser liquid ablation, providing a green and effective new method for the preparation of high-efficiency photocatalytic materials.

A real case study of an energy system based on a Solar Assisted Heat Pump (SAHP) fed by hybrid photovoltaic-thermal solar panels (PVT) and seasonal storage (SS) is presented in this paper. Exergy and exergy cost analyses are proposed as complementary methods for the assessment and better understanding of the efficiency of this cogeneration solar configuration. The system performance takes advantage of storage heat in summer, when the solar resource is high in Spain, and is then later consumed during the cold winter (heating season). The building is devoted to social housing, and it is currently under construction. The assessment is based on simulations developed using TRNSYS, a dynamic simulation software for energy systems. Results show that the unit exergy cost of the solar field is around 6. The cost of the seasonal storage is higher, about 13, and its formation is affected both by its own irreversibility and by the irreversibility of the PVT solar field. The cost of the heat delivered by the heat pump is around 15, being affected by all the upstream units and even by the grid. Besides, the analysis points out strategies for improving the system efficiency, such as increasing the size of the storage tank or improving the control strategy of the boiler.

There are several factors that can be used to predict a dengue fever outbreak. Almost all existing research approaches, however, usually exploit the use of a basic set of core attributes to forecast an outbreak, e.g. temperature, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall. In contrast, this research identifies new attributes to improve the prediction accuracy of the outbreak. The experimental results are analyzed using a correlation analysis and demonstrate that the density of dengue virus infection rate in female mosquitoes and seasons have strong correlation with a dengue fever outbreak. In addition, the research constructs a forecast model using Poisson regression analysis. The result shows the proposed model obtains significantly low forecasting error rate when compared it against the conventional model using only temperature, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall parameters.

In this paper, a job shop scheduling model combining MAS (Multi-Agent System) with GASA (Simulated Annealing-Genetic Algorithm) is presented. The proposed model is based on the E2GPGP (extended extended generalized partial global planning) mechanism and utilizes the advantages of static intelligence algorithms with dynamic MAS. A scheduling process from ‘initialized macro-scheduling’ to ‘repeated micro-scheduling’ is designed for large-scale complex problems to enable to implement an effective and widely applicable prototype system for the job shop scheduling problem (JSSP). Under a set of theoretic strategies in the GPGP which is summarized in detail, E2GPGP is also proposed further. The GPGP-cooperation-mechanism is simulated by using simulation software DECAF for the JSSP. The results show that the proposed model based on the E2GPGP-GASA not only improves the effectiveness, but also reduces the resource cost.
