With the finishing of the construction of the main body of a freeway network, adequately monitoring the traffic status of the network has become an urgent need for both travelers and transportation operators. Various methods are proposed to collect traffic information for this purpose. In this article, a data-driven feature-based learning application is implemented to detect segment traffic status using mobile phone data, building on the practical success of deep learning models in other fields. The traffic status estimation is achieved via the application of a three-level long, short-term memory model. Two phone features are extracted from the raw mobile phone data. A large-scale field experiment was conducted using actual data in Jiangsu, China collected over the “National Holiday Golden Week” of 2014. To evaluate the performance, both precision and recall scores are given along with the overall accuracy. The final results of the large-scale experiment indicate that the proposed application performed well and can be an emerging solution for traffic state monitoring when only limited roadside sensing devices are installed.

Accurate and timely estimations of large-scale population distributions are a valuable input for social geography and economic research and for policy-making. The most popular large-scale method to calculate such estimations uses mobile phone data. We propose a novel method, firstly based upon using a kernel density estimation (KDE) to estimate dynamic mobile phone users’ distributions at a two-hourly scale temporal resolution. Secondly, a convolutional long short-term memory (ConvLSTM) model was used in our study to predict mobile phone users’ spatial and temporal distributions for the first time at such a fine-grained temporal resolution. The evaluation results show that the predicted people’s mobility derived from the mobile phone users’ density correlates much better with the actual density, both temporally and spatially, as compared to traditional methods such as time-series prediction, autoregressive moving average model (ARMA), and LSTM.

Obtaining the time and space features of the travel of urban residents can facilitate urban traffic optimization and urban planning. As traditional methods often have limited sample coverage and lack timeliness, the application of big data such as mobile phone data in urban studies makes it possible to rapidly acquire the features of residents’ travel. However, few studies have attempted to use them to recognize the travel modes of residents. Based on mobile phone call detail records and the Web MapAPI, the present study proposes a method to recognize the travel mode of urban residents. The main processes include: (a) using DBSCAN clustering to analyze each user’s important location points and identify their main travel trajectories; (b) using an online map API to analyze user’s means of travel; (c) comparing the two to recognize the travel mode of residents. Applying this method in a GIS platform can further help obtain the traffic flow of various means, such as walking, driving, and public transit, on different roads during peak hours on weekdays. Results are cross-checked with other data sources and are proven effective. Besides recognizing travel modes of residents, the proposed method can also be applied for studies such as travel costs, housing–job balance, and road traffic pressure. The study acquires about 6 million residents’ travel modes, working place and residence information, and analyzes the means of travel and traffic flow in the commuting of 3 million residents using the proposed method. The findings not only provide new ideas for the collection and application of urban traffic information, but also provide data support for urban planning and traffic management.

<p>Simulation accuracy among traditional hydrological models usually degrades significantly when going from single basin to regional scale. Hydrological models perform best when calibrated for specific basins, and do worse when a regional calibration scheme is used. </p><p>One reason for this is that these models do not (have to) learn hydrological processes from data. Rather, they have a predefined model structure and only a handful of parameters adapt to specific basins. This often yields less-than-optimal parameter values when the loss is not determined by a single basin, but by many through regional calibration.</p><p>The opposite is true for data driven approaches where models tend to get better with more and diverse training data. We examine whether this holds true when modeling rainfall-runoff processes with deep learning, or if, like their process-based counterparts, data-driven hydrological models degrade when going from basin to regional scale.</p><p>Recently, Kratzert et al. (2018) showed that the Long Short-Term Memory network (LSTM), a special type of recurrent neural network, achieves comparable performance to the SAC-SMA at basin scale. In follow up work Kratzert et al. (2019a) trained a single LSTM for hundreds of basins in the continental US, which outperformed a set of hydrological models significantly, even compared to basin-calibrated hydrological models. On average, a single LSTM is even better in out-of-sample predictions (ungauged) compared to the SAC-SMA in-sample (gauged) or US National Water Model (Kratzert et al. 2019b).</p><p>LSTM-based approaches usually involve tuning a large number of hyperparameters, such as the number of neurons, number of layers, and learning rate, that are critical for the predictive performance. Therefore, large-scale hyperparameter search has to be performed to obtain a proficient LSTM network.  </p><p>However, in the abovementioned studies, hyperparameter optimization was not conducted at large scale and e.g. in Kratzert et al. (2018) the same network hyperparameters were used in all basins, instead of tuning hyperparameters for each basin separately. It is yet unclear whether LSTMs follow the same trend of traditional hydrological models to degrade performance from basin to regional scale. </p><p>In the current study, we performed a computational expensive, basin-specific hyperparameter search to explore how site-specific LSTMs differ in performance compared to regionally calibrated LSTMs. We compared our results to the mHM and VIC models, once calibrated per-basin and once using an MPR regionalization scheme. These benchmark models were calibrated individual research groups, to eliminate bias in our study. The overall understanding of spatial interaction and the exact knowledge of its dynamic evolution are required in the urban planning and transportation planning. This study aimed to analyze the spatial interaction based on the large-scale mobile phone data. The newly arisen mass dataset required a new methodology which was compatible with its peculiar characteristics. A three-stage framework was proposed in this paper, including data preprocessing, critical activity identification, and spatial interaction measurement. The proposed framework introduced the frequent pattern mining and measured the spatial interaction by the obtained association. A case study of three communities in Shanghai was carried out as verification of proposed method and demonstration of its practical application. The spatial interaction patterns and the representative features proved the rationality of the proposed framework.

The recent availability of large-scale call detail record data has substantially improved our ability of quantifying human travel patterns with broad applications in epidemiology. Notwithstanding a number of successful case studies, previous works have shown that using different mobility data sources, such as mobile phone data or census surveys, to parametrize infectious disease models can generate divergent outcomes. Thus, it remains unclear to what extent epidemic modelling results may vary when using different proxies for human movements. Here, we systematically compare 658 000 simulated outbreaks generated with a spatially structured epidemic model based on two different human mobility networks: a commuting network of France extracted from mobile phone data and another extracted from a census survey. We compare epidemic patterns originating from all the 329 possible outbreak seed locations and identify the structural network properties of the seeding nodes that best predict spatial and temporal epidemic patterns to be alike. We find that similarity of simulated epidemics is significantly correlated to connectivity, traffic and population size of the seeding nodes, suggesting that the adequacy of mobile phone data for infectious disease models becomes higher when epidemics spread between highly connected and heavily populated locations, such as large urban areas.

A key issue to understand urban system is to characterize the activity dynamics in a city—when, where, what, and how activities happen in a city. To better understand the urban activity dynamics, city-wide and multiday activity participation sequence data, namely, activity chain as well as suitable spatiotemporal models, are needed. The commonly used household travel survey data in activity analysis suffers from limited sample size and temporal coverage. The emergence of large-scale spatiotemporal data in urban areas, such as mobile phone data, provides a new opportunity to infer urban activities and the underlying dynamics. However, the challenge is the absence of labeled activity information in mobile phone data. Consequently, how to fuse the useful information in household survey data and mobile phone data to build city-wide, multiday, and all-time activity chains becomes an important research question. Moreover, the multidimension structure of the activity data (e.g., location, start time, duration, type) makes the extraction of spatiotemporal activity patterns another difficult problem. In this study, the authors first introduce an activity chain inference model based on tensor decomposition to infer the missing activity labels in large-scale and multiday activity data, and then develop a spatiotemporal event clustering model based on DBSCAN, called STE-DBSCAN, to identify the spatiotemporal activity patterns. The proposed approaches achieved good accuracy and produced patterns with a high level of interpretability.
