Strategic and managemerial decision-making in an organization can have a crucial effect for the whole entity; however, it rarely involves the organization’s employees evenly at the different organizational levels. The result is—what is addressed in this paper as—the ostracism risk, namely the risk accruing from the lack of satisfaction of underprivileged employees’ groups during the decision-making process. The ostracism risk could jeopardize the organization’s integrity and therefore requires effective treatment. This paper aims at verifying a conceptual approach, which is proposed as a methodology for assessing the probability of organizational cooperation when deciding under risk, thus minimizing ostracism risk. The proposed approach is based on organizational and human resources management (HRM) theories and is contextualized for construction through the understanding of systems theory. The proposed methodology presents a potential modelling via game theory of a medium-sized construction company that is organized according to Mintzberg’s organizational model. The utilization of the bounded Pareto distribution is presented as an approach of the model’s probabilistic processing, and the potential for estimating the probabilities to adopt a favorable cooperational decision is verified. The paper concludes with the reference to the next steps required for the methodology’s validation and further improvement.

The trend in the Human Resources Management is to enhance it to the strategic level, this paper intends to provide an advanced decision making tool in the field of the Strategic Human Resources Management applying a combination of an augmented SWOT analysis approach to evaluate and to rank strategies and a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) to eliminate the vagueness in the expressed opinions. The version of SWOT utilized here includes the client opinion and employee engagement besides to the traditional experts' assessment, while the FIS is an instrument that treats the data coming from SWOT analysis with the goal of avoiding the uncertainty that may come from the opinions expressed in the SWOT analysis and so to improve the ranking of the strategies. The results show improvements in prioritization of strategies in the way that besides knowing the decision to make for each, the model shows us also what to do regarding every strategy (what to maximize and what to minimize while talking about strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threat). The proposed model can be applied for strategies prioritization and decision making problems in all fields.

Although reusable materials in a construction project need to be specifically managed by the head office of the construction company for proper retrieval and reuse, they are not efficiently managed. In many cases, construction companies treat reusable materials no differently from non-reusable materials. To manage reusable materials for effective and efficient procurement, the current procurement system needs to be improved based on the records of usage from multiple projects monitored and managed by the head office of the construction company. The objective of this paper is to discern and analyze the problems of the procurement process of reusable materials for current multiple projects by following case studies of three construction companies against this background. Based on the analysis, this paper emphasizes the need to implement systems for reusable materials procurement requests, outgoing materials quantity forecasts, and economic analysis for vehicle distribution, as well as the need to expand applicable uses of a resource pool. A model is also proposed to support the decision-making process in the procurement of reusable materials.

This chapter develops a framework for assessing the value generated by both the option-like and competitive characteristics of an acquisition strategy. The conceptual approach is based on real options and principles from game theory. It illustrates the approach with an example of how real options and games thinking were used in strategic decision making at a major pharmaceutical company. The method treats an acquisition strategy as a package of corporate real options actively managed by the firm in a context of competitive responses or changing market conditions. This framework can help management answer several questions that are important for a successful acquisition strategy: How valuable are the growth opportunities created by the acquisition? How can we best sequence the acquisition options in the strategy? When is it appropriate to grow organically, and when are strategic acquisitions the preferred route? How is the industry likely to respond, and how will that affect the value of our acquisitions and future targets? The subsequent sections present a series of frameworks to address these questions.
