The transportation system, especially the road network, is the backbone of any modern economy. However, with rapid urbanization, the congestion level has surged drastically, causing a direct effect on the quality of urban life, the environment, and the economy. In this paper, we propose (i) an inexpensive and efficient Traffic Congestion Pattern Analysis algorithm based on Image Processing, which identifies the group of roads in a network that suffers from reoccurring congestion; (ii) deep neural network architecture, formed from Convolutional Autoencoder, which learns both spatial and temporal relationships from the sequence of image data to predict the city-wide grid congestion index. Our experiment shows that both algorithms are efficient because the pattern analysis is based on the basic operations of arithmetic, whereas the prediction algorithm outperforms two other deep neural networks (Convolutional Recurrent Autoencoder and ConvLSTM) in terms of large-scale traffic network prediction performance. A case study was conducted on the dataset from Seoul city.

The macroscopic traffic flow parameters characteristic is an important research content in traffic flow theory. Urban expressway plays an important role in the urban road network. It is gradually shifting from large-scale infrastructure-oriented to refinement of traffic management. With the growing of traffic demand and much more traffic congestion and accidents, integrated active traffic management should be involved in urban expressway management on the back ground of car-road coordination. As the backbone road network, traffic flow characteristic parameters have great value for the control and management of urban expressway. Then the characteristic variables of the expressway traffic flow were identified which support meticulous management for urban expressway.

Abstract The emerging IEEE 802.11ah is a promising communication standard for large-scale networks particularly the Internet of Things (IoT). The single-channel-based centralized channel access mechanism employed in 802.11ah does not scale well in such networks and leads to poor data reception quality. In this paper, we propose a multi-band sectorization and dynamic load balancing scheme for improving scalability. These features facilitate multi-hop communication more efficiently and enhance network capacity. Traffic congestion issues prevailing around the access point node due to the large volume of uplink traffic is mitigated by allowing simultaneous transmission using multiple orthogonal channels and sectors. Simulation and analytical results establish the essence of the novel protocol by showing significant improvements in terms of throughput and average packet delay over the existing schemes. The proposed network architecture improves throughput and delay performance up to 150% and 100% respectively compared to the relevant schemes.

Literary societies are in focus both of literary studies and social history.1 In particular, they played an important role in the modernization of Central Europe in the 19th century. Becoming widespread in this era, they helped develop a democratic2 political culture and disseminated literature to a wider audience. Hungarian historiography has depicted this period as one of large-scale social segregation and a fragmented middle class which refused to have any contact with the bourgeoisie,34 while Slovakian historians have emphasized the exclusion of Slovaks from elite society.5 Kassa (today Košice), which was then situated in northern Hungary and is now the largest city in eastern Slovakia, has, however, been recognized as a more complicated example that challenges these assumptions.6 For instance, the importance of local citizenry was preserved in the first half of the 19th century, in contrary to other cities in Hungary.7 The purpose of this article is to examine the composition of the most prominent social club of the town to provide fresh insights into the social history of Kassa in this period, and the larger processes shaping urban life in Central Europe in the period before the First World War. In particular, this article argues that a culture of both pluralism and exclusion was evident in the membership of Kassa’s Kazinczy Circle, and that their affiliations reveal a more complicated social network in the city, which both preserved communal solidarity during a period of rapid urbanization and encouraged the growth of modern democratic values.

For a long time, many researchers have investigated the continuous network design problem (CNDP) to distribute equitably additional capacity between selected links in a road network, to overcome traffic congestion in urban roads. In addition, CNDP plays a critical role for local authorities in tackling traffic congestion with a limited budget. Due to the mutual interaction between road users and local authorities, CNDP is usually solved using the bilevel modeling technique. The upper level seeks to find the optimal capacity enhancements of selected links, while the lower level is used to solve the traffic assignment problem. In this study, we introduced the enhanced differential evolution algorithm based on multiple improvement strategies (EDEMIS) for solving CNDP. We applied EDEMIS first to a hypothetical network to show its ability in finding the global optimum solution, at least in a small network. Then, we used a 16-link network to reveal the capability of EDEMIS especially in the case of high demand. Finally, we used the Sioux Falls city network to evaluate the performance of EDEMIS according to other solution methods on a medium-sized road network. The results showed that EDEMIS produces better solutions than other considered algorithms, encouraging transportation planners to use it in large-scale road networks.

Proposals have been formulated to reduce the vulnerability of the urban population in the long term and to eliminate traffic congestion and congestion — jams.

Image deconvolution has been an important issue recently. It has two kinds of approaches: non-blind and blind. Non-blind deconvolution is a classic problem of image deblurring, which assumes that the PSF is known and does not change universally in space. Recently, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has been used for non-blind deconvolution. Though CNNs can deal with complex changes for unknown images, some CNN-based conventional methods can only handle small PSFs and does not consider the use of large PSFs in the real world. In this paper we propose a non-blind deconvolution framework based on a CNN that can remove large scale ringing in a deblurred image. Our method has three key points. The first is that our network architecture is able to preserve both large and small features in the image. The second is that the training dataset is created to preserve the details. The third is that we extend the images to minimize the effects of large ringing on the image borders. In our experiments, we used three kinds of large PSFs and were able to observe high-precision results from our method both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Stimulated by the dramatical service demand in the logistics industry, logistics trucks employed in last-mile parcel delivery bring critical public concerns, such as heavy cost burden, traffic congestion and air pollution. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are a promising alternative tool in last-mile delivery, which is however limited by insufficient flight range and load capacity. This paper presents an innovative energy-limited logistics UAV schedule approach using crowdsourced buses. Specifically, when one UAV delivers a parcel, it first lands on a crowdsourced social bus to parcel destination, gets recharged by the wireless recharger deployed on the bus, and then flies from the bus to the parcel destination. This novel approach not only increases the delivery range and load capacity of battery-limited UAVs, but is also much more cost-effective and environment-friendly than traditional methods. New challenges therefore emerge as the buses with spatiotemporal mobility become the bottleneck during delivery. By landing on buses, an Energy-Neutral Flight Principle and a delivery scheduling algorithm are proposed for the UAVs. Using the Energy-Neutral Flight Principle, each UAV can plan a flying path without depleting energy given buses with uncertain velocities. Besides, the delivery scheduling algorithm optimizes the delivery time and number of delivered parcels given warehouse location, logistics UAVs, parcel locations and buses. Comprehensive evaluations using a large-scale bus dataset demonstrate the superiority of the innovative logistics UAV schedule approach.

Computer vision-based action recognition of basketball players in basketball training and competition has gradually become a research hotspot. However, owing to the complex technical action, diverse background, and limb occlusion, it remains a challenging task without effective solutions or public dataset benchmarks. In this study, we defined 32 kinds of atomic actions covering most of the complex actions for basketball players and built the dataset NPU RGB+D (a large scale dataset of basketball action recognition with RGB image data and Depth data captured in Northwestern Polytechnical University) for 12 kinds of actions of 10 professional basketball players with 2169 RGB+D videos and 75 thousand frames, including RGB frame sequences, depth maps, and skeleton coordinates. Through extracting the spatial features of the distances and angles between the joint points of basketball players, we created a new feature-enhanced skeleton-based method called LSTM-DGCN for basketball player action recognition based on the deep graph convolutional network (DGCN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) methods. Many advanced action recognition methods were evaluated on our dataset and compared with our proposed method. The experimental results show that the NPU RGB+D dataset is very competitive with the current action recognition algorithms and that our LSTM-DGCN outperforms the state-of-the-art action recognition methods in various evaluation criteria on our dataset. Our action classifications and this NPU RGB+D dataset are valuable for basketball player action recognition techniques. The feature-enhanced LSTM-DGCN has a more accurate action recognition effect, which improves the motion expression ability of the skeleton data.

We introduce SketchGNN , a convolutional graph neural network for semantic segmentation and labeling of freehand vector sketches. We treat an input stroke-based sketch as a graph with nodes representing the sampled points along input strokes and edges encoding the stroke structure information. To predict the per-node labels, our SketchGNN uses graph convolution and a static-dynamic branching network architecture to extract the features at three levels, i.e., point-level, stroke-level, and sketch-level. SketchGNN significantly improves the accuracy of the state-of-the-art methods for semantic sketch segmentation (by 11.2% in the pixel-based metric and 18.2% in the component-based metric over a large-scale challenging SPG dataset) and has magnitudes fewer parameters than both image-based and sequence-based methods.
