Citizen science approaches to data collection are growing in popularity, in part because of their potential for achieving both scientific and educational objectives. Evaluating the impacts of participation on citizen scientists is important, yet such evaluations are still relatively rare. In addition, recent literature reviews indicate that existing studies often focus on content learning, make limited use of existing scales, and rarely report null results. This paper reports an evaluation of the demographic profile, motivations and learning outcomes of participants in the Dutch National Bee Survey, a national-scale citizen science project involving citizens in collecting observational data of wild bees. Using a repeated measures survey study, we assessed the impact of participation on respondents’ attitudes and behavioural intentions regarding bees, and their attitudes towards nature, citizenship, and citizen science. Our baseline (N = 373) and follow-up (N = 208) surveys indicate that our respondents are of a relatively high age and education level, have a pre-existing affinity with nature, and are strongly motivated by conservation concerns and learning about bees. Assessment of learning outcomes indicated a significant difference between two types of self-report questions: respondents reported significant gains in knowledge and appreciation of wild bees, yet attitudinal scales indicated no significant shifts in attitudes towards bees, nature, citizen science, or citizenship. In our discussion, we suggest several explanations for this finding, including respondents’ pre-existing affinity with nature, and advance suggestions for future research into citizen science learning outcomes.

Abstract Background People who are experiencing a First Episode of Psychosis (FEP) often have limited recovery from non-integrated treatment approaches in usual settings. Treatment of FEP typically entails high rates of non-adherence, disengaging from treatment, and increased rates of relapse (Mueser et al., 2015; Kane et al., 2016). NAVIGATE is an evidence-based approach implemented in the Recovery After an Initial Schizophrenia Episode treatment project. Methods The present study is a review of archival data with NAVIGATE model teams in Minnesota. Clinical information from 118 people with FEP was reviewed from the first 6-months of treatment, with a subset analyzed for the first 12-months. Individuals were assessed with clinician ratings of current needs, illness management, and global functioning. Self-report assessments addressed symptoms and illness management from the client’s perspective. Data was analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance with post-hoc honest significant difference testing. Additional data analysis utilized McNemar’s test, a repeated measures test using counts and a chi-square distribution. Results Total current needs did not change significantly across time. All other domains assessed showed significant differences between intake and 6-months. All other domains except total needs showed significant differences between intake and 12-months. No domains showed significant differences between 6-months and 12-months. Substance use was not reduced over time. Antipsychotic medication use was not reduced over time. Hospitalizations were substantially reduced from intake to 6-months. Discussion Almost all symptoms improved from intake to 6-months. No additional treatment gains were observed from 6-months to 12-months. Improvements from intake were stable from 6-months to 12-months. Most symptoms improved from intake to 6-months but not beyond. The NAVIGATE model was a successful intervention as implemented in Minnesota. Overall, symptom reduction gains were durable at 12-months, hospitalizations were reduced from intake to 6-months, but the intervention did not improve substance use. Substance use, continued improvement of symptoms beyond the 6-month mark, and further improvements in symptoms or reduced hospitalizations are areas for future research and treatment development.

Many determinants leading to the use of different coercive measures in psychiatry have been widely studied and it seems that staff attitudes play a crucial role when it comes to the decision-making process about using coercion. However, research results about staff attitudes and their role in the use of coercive measures are inconsistent. This might be due to a focus on self-report studies asking for explicit answers, which involves the risk of bias. This study aimed to expand research on this topic by examining the impact of explicit and implicit staff attitudes on the use of coercive measures in clinical practice. In addition, the influence of gender, profession (nurses, psychiatrists), and years of professional experience as well as their influence on staff attitudes were examined. An adaption of the implicit association measure, the Go/No-Go Association Task (GNAT), with the target category coercion and distracter stimuli describing work load, as well as the explicit questionnaire Staff Attitudes to Coercion Scale (SACS) was completed by staff (N = 149) on 13 acute psychiatric units in 6 hospitals. Data on coercive measures as well as the total number of treated cases for each unit was collected. Results showed that there was no association between staff's implicit and explicit attitudes toward coercion, and neither measure was correlated with the local frequency of coercive measures. ANOVAs showed a significant difference of the GNAT result for the factor gender (F = 9.32, p = 0.003), demonstrating a higher tendency to justify coercion among female staff members (M = −0.23, SD = ±0.35) compared to their male colleagues (M = −0.41, SD = ±0.31). For the SACS, a significant difference was found for the factor profession (F = 7.58, p = 0.007), with nurses (M = 2.79, SD = ±1.40) showing a more positive attitude to the use of coercion than psychiatrists (M = 2.15, SD = ±1.11). No significant associations were found regarding the extent of professional experience. Results indicate a complex interaction between implicit and explicit decision-making processes dependent on specific contexts. We propose future research to include primers for more context-related outcomes. Furthermore, differences in gender suggest a need to direct attention toward occupational safety and possible feelings of anxiety in the workplace, especially for female staff members.

Objective: To provide an overview of what is known about the impact of COVID-19 on weight and weight-related behaviors. Methods: Systematic scoping review using the Arksey and O’Malley methodology. Results: A total of 19 out of 396 articles were included. All studies were conducted using online self-report surveys. The average age of respondents ranged from 19 to 47 years old, comprised of more females. Almost one-half and one-fifth of the respondents gained and lost weight during the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively. Among articles that examined weight, diet and physical activity changes concurrently, weight gain was reported alongside a 36.3% to 59.6% increase in total food consumption and a 67.4% to 61.4% decrease in physical activities. Weight gain predictors included female sex, middle-age, increased appetite, snacking after dinner, less physical exercise, sedentary behaviors of ≥6 h/day, low water consumption and less sleep at night. Included articles did not illustrate significant associations between alcohol consumption, screen time, education, place of living and employment status, although sedentary behaviors, including screen time, did increase significantly. Conclusions: Examining behavioral differences alone is insufficient in predicting weight status. Future research could examine differences in personality and coping mechanisms to design more personalized and effective weight management interventions.

Burnout and engagement are important psychological outcomes in sport with potential to impact athletes as well as sport parents. The present study examined associations among markers of the sport-based parent child-relationship (warmth and conflict) and parent burnout and engagement in organized youth sport. Youth sport parents (N = 214) aged 26–66 years (M = 43.2,SD = 6.2) completed valid and reliable self-report assessments of study variables. Study results showcased warmth, but not conflict, in the parent–child relationship as a significant negative contributor to global burnout and a significant positive contributor to global engagement in sport parents. Results offer preliminary insight into the impact of parent–child warmth in sport on parents’ experiences of burnout and engagement. Findings have implications for future research and practice designed to promote positive psychosocial experiences for sport families.

The aim of this study was to prospectively analyze the impact of psychoeducation with relatives of addicted patients with personality disorders. We measured the impact of the psychoeducational intervention using a self-report questionnaire designed to assess perceived familiar support. The sample was composed by 37 patients with alcohol dependence following outpatient treatment. They underwent a cognitive-behavioral therapy relapse prevention program especially tailored for addicted individuals with comorbid personality disorders. 56.8% of patients followed individual therapy, and 43.2% followed group therapy. The relatives of the subgroup patients following group therapy simultaneously received the psychoeducational intervention. The analyses of the familiar support questionnaire across treatment showed a significant difference between groups as a function of treatment modality. Patients whose relatives followed the psychoeducational intervention had greater perception of familiar support throughout the treatment process.

Abstract. When using Short Message Service (SMS) as a tool for data collection in psychological research, participants can be contacted at any time. This study examined how sampling frequency and time of day of contact impacted on response rates, response completeness, and response delay in repeated measures data collected via SMS. Eighty-five undergraduate students completed a six-item self-report questionnaire via SMS, in response to 20 SMS prompts sent on a random schedule. One group responded across 2 days, the other on a compressed schedule of 1 day. Overall, there was a high response rate. There was no significant difference in response rate, completeness, and delay of those responding across 1 or 2 days. Timing between prompts did not impact on response behavior. Responses were more likely to be complete if prompts were sent during the working day. The shortest time between prompts was 15 min, however, and use of an undergraduate sample limits generalizability. When conducting repeated measures sampling using SMS, researchers should be aware that more frequent sampling can be associated with poorer data quality, and should aim to collect data during the working day rather than mornings or evenings.

Abstract: Smart circuits are learning media to be applied in Mathematics learning. This study aims to find out the development process, feasibility, and influence of smart circuit media in mathematics learning for third grade in Elementary School. This study used the Research and Development research method, with the Borg, and Gall model. The development begins with determining the core competencies, basic competencies, indicators and subjects for making questions. The researcher put stickers of interesting cartoon images on each plot on the wooden planks of this medium. The necessary media prerequisites include: dice, pawns, game hints, and a memory. After the media is made, a feasibility test analysis was done, before the t-test. The data collection instruments used questionnaires, observations, and interviews. The results of this study showed that: (1) The smart circuit media is feasible to implemented in improving mathematics learning outcomes. This can be seen from the results of feasibility test by media experts and material experts before it is implemented in the class which showed that the presentation aspect gets a percentage of 82.5% from the first media experts, and 90% from the second media experts; efficiency aspects was 81.25%, and 100%; and media quality aspects was 82.5% and 92.5%. (2) Based on the t-test result, it can be concluded that the smart circuit media can improve student learning outcomes. This is showed by the significant difference in learning outcomes between the experimental class, and the control class with a significance value of 0.014 < 0.05. The impact of this research is the students can understand the material in learning mathematics easily.PENGEMBANGAN MEDIA SIRKUIT PINTAR UNTUK MENINGKATKAN  HASIL BELAJAR SISWA PADA PEMBELAJARAN MATEMATIKAAbstrak: Sirkuit pintar adalah media pembelajaran yang menarik untuk diterapkan dalam pembelajaran Matematika. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui proses pengembangan, kelayakan, serta pengaruh media sirkuit pintar dalam pembelajaran matematika kelas III MI. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian Research and Development, dengan model Borg, and Gall. Pengembangannya dimulai dengan menentukan kompetensi inti, kompetensi dasar, indikator serta mata pelajaran untuk membuat pertanyaan. Peneliti menempelkan stiker gambar kartun yang menarik di setiap petak pada papan kayu media ini. Prasyarat media yang diperlukan antara lain: dadu, bidak, petunjuk permainan, dan bengkel ingatan. Setelah media dibuat, selanjutnya dilakukan analisis uji kelayakan, sebelum dilakukan uji-t. Instrumen pengumpulan data yang digunakan antara lain kuesioner, observasi, dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: (1) Media sirkuit pintar ini layak digunakan dalam meningkatkan hasil belajar matematika. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil uji kelayakan oleh ahli media, dan ahli materi sebelum diterapkan di lapangan yang menunjukkan bahwa aspek penyajian mendapatkan persentase sebesar 82.5% ahli media pertama, dan 90%  dari ahli media kedua; aspek efisiensi sebesar 81.25%, dan 100%; serta aspek kualitas media sebesar 82.5%, dan 92.5%. (2) Setelah dilakukan uji-t, dapat disimpulkan bahwa media sirkuit pintar dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar peserta didik. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan adanya perbedaan hasil belajar yang signifikan antara kelas eksperimen, dan kelas kontrol dengan nilai signifikansi 0,014 < 0,05. Dampak penelitian ini adalah peserta didik dapat memahami materi pada pembelajaran matematika dengan mudah.

At the celebration of its 30th anniversary, Erasmus is recognised as the most successful exchange program ever implemented. The prospects of attaining a common European consciousness challenged the program's ability to blend together knowledge, attitudes and skills in a winning combination. It is no longer sufficient to communicate and integrate: mobility should actively foster skills to support students's professional career at national and international levels. Although literature on mobility is vast and interesting, studies on the impact of the mobility experience in the students' future employability profile rarely provide first-hand data on their expectations in this regard. This exploratory research comprises a qualitative focus group approach with Erasmus students during their exchange period in a Portuguese university and collected some insightful data on how students consider their mobility in terms of new learning outcomes, the professional value of the experience and the development of new skills. Results indicate that students seem to be quite aware of the positive implications of mobility in their professional careers and of the set of skills developed during that period. Overall, this article contributes to demonstrating the importance of assessing skills development during Erasmus mobility experiences. Managerial implications and suggestions for future research are provided.

ABSTRACTBackground:To estimate the impact of comorbid diabetes on caregiver stress in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients from the Impact of Cholinergic Treatment Use (ICTUS) study.Methods:Using the Data from the ICTUS study, diabetes mellitus (DM) was recorded at baseline and caregiver burden was assessed twice per year using the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) scale. The three-factorial model of ZBI (the effect on the social and personal life of caregivers, the psychological burden and the feelings of guilt) was adopted. Linear mixed models were used to examine the relation between DM and the scores of ZBI.Results:The present analyses were conducted on 1,264 AD subjects. A total of 156 patients (12.3%) had DM with taking antidiabetic medication and/or self-report of a history. At baseline, the caregivers of patients with or without DM had similar ZBI global scores and similar scores of three different factors of ZBI. Unadjusted and adjusted models both indicated that ZBI global score increased over a 24-month follow-up without significant effect of DM. Similarly, unadjusted model showed that DM was not determining any significant difference in the score of any factor. However, adjusted model indicated that in diabetic patients, the scores of the social and personal life of caregivers and the psychological burden increased more slowly than those in non-diabetic patients (p = 0.04 and 0.01, respectively).Conclusions:DM may affect the caregivers’ daily social and personal life and psychological burden in AD patients. It is necessary for further research.

Although (1) literacy teacher education research and professional practice standards highlight the significance of empathy as a central tenant of teachers' professional dispositions, and (2) developing deeper and more empathetic understanding of others is a frequently cited rationale for utilizing service-learning as a critical pedagogy for in-service and pre-service teacher preparation, little quantitative research exists measuring in-service teachers' empathy or empathy development. The purpose of this chapter is to explore how a course-embedded, self-selected, and community-based service-learning experience effected participating literacy teachers' self-reported empathy. While participants scores increased in the pre-post condition, results of a paired sample t-test indicated no significant difference in teachers' self-reported empathy across the pre-post condition. Implications for practice and program administration as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.
