The high increase of renewable energy sources and the increment of distributed generation in the electrical grid has made them complex and of variable parameters, causing potential stability problems to the PI controllers. In this document, a control strategy for power injection to the electrical system from photovoltaic plants through a voltage source inverter two-level-type (VSI-2L) converter is proposed. The algorithm combines a current-based maximum power point-tracking (Current-Based MPPT) with model predictive control (MPC) strategy, allowing avoidance of the use of PI controllers and lowering of the dependence of high-capacitive value condensers. The sections of this paper describe the parts of the system, control algorithms, and simulated and experimental results that allow observation of the behavior of the proposed strategy.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is one of the most viable renewable energy sources, considered less polluting than fossil energy. However, the average power conversion efficiency of PV systems is between 15% and 20%, and they must operate with high efficiency. Photovoltaic cells have non-linear voltage–current characteristics that are dependent on environmental factors such as solar irradiation and temperature, and have low efficiency. Therefore, it becomes crucial to harvest the maximum power from PV panels. This paper aims to study and analyze the most common and well-known maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms, perturb and observe (P&O) and incremental conductance (IncCond). These algorithms were found to be easy to implement, low-cost techniques suitable for large- and medium-sized photovoltaic applications. The algorithms were tested and compared dynamically using MATLAB/Simulink software. In order to overcome the low performance of the P&O and IncCond methods under time-varying and fast-changing solar irradiation, several modifications are proposed. Results show an improvement in the tracking and overall system efficiencies and a shortened response time compared with original techniques. In addition, the proposed algorithms minimize the oscillations around the maximum power point (MPP), and the power converges faster.

The solar energy is directly converted into electrical energy by solar PV module. Each type of PV module has its own specific characteristic corresponding to the surrounding condition such as irradiation, and temperature and this makes the tracking of maximum power point (MPP) a complicated problem. To overcome this problem, many maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control algorithms have been presented. Fuzzy logic (FL) has been used for tracking the MPP of PV modules because it has the advantages of being robust, relatively simple to design and does not require the knowledge of an exact model where a mathematical model of the PV module, DC-DC converter, are used in the study of FL based MPPT algorithm. It is suggested to present this problem in the form of two-folds; first to identify the deviation of the power to maximum power point, and secondly, to control the voltage of the DC-DC converter corresponding to maximum power. In this paper, the first discussion approach will stress out the integration of model predictive control in maximum power point tracking MPPT and as progressing a second approach is identified as fuzzy logic controller FLC and perturb & Observe P&O algorithms are analyzed. All are interrelated to MPPT model for a photovoltaic module, PVM, to search for and generate the maximum power; in this case what’s called P-max. As per the first technique the focus is on the optimal duty ratio, D, for a series of multi diverse types of converters and load matching. The design of the MPPT for a stand-alone photovoltaic power generation system is applied where the system will consist of a solar array with nonlinear time varying characteristics, and a converter with appropriate filters. The integration of model predictive control will be addressed first in this paper. The second fold will implement an MPPT system that use the FLC and compare it with a classical MPPT P&O algorithm through the utilization of Simulink. The novel design in the FLC will be based on the use of asymmetrical membership functions to compensate for the asymmetrical P-V curve of solar panel.

Maximum power point tracking is a method employed to produce the utmost power available from the photovoltaic module. To date, many algorithms for maximum power point tracking technique had been stated, every with its own capabilities. In this paper, a Luo converter with high-voltage conversion gain is employed to track photovoltaic panels at maximum power and to step up the voltage to a higher level. This work also aims to validate the performance of the maximum power point tracking system with Luo converter which utilizes incremental conductance techniques. Space vector modulation and sinusoidal pulse width modulations are the control techniques employed to control the three-phase voltage source converter. In order to measure the overall performance indices of the proposed system, a simulation is carried out in MATLAB / Simulink environment.
