An improved heating and evaporation model of fuel droplets is implemented into the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software CONVERGE for the simulation of sprays. The analytical solutions to the heat conduction and species diffusion equations in the liquid phase for each time step are coded via user-defined functions (UDF) into the software. The customized version of CONVERGE is validated against measurements for a single droplet of n-heptane and n-decane mixture. It is shown that the new heating and evaporation model better agrees with the experimental data than those predicted by the built-in heating and evaporation model, which does not consider the effects of temperature gradient and assumes infinitely fast species diffusion inside droplets. The simulation of a hollow-cone spray of primary reference fuel (PRF65) is performed and validated against experimental data taken from the literature. Finally, the newly implemented model is tested by running full-cycle engine simulations, representing partially premixed compression ignition (PPCI) using PRF65 as the fuel. These simulations are successfully performed for two start of injection timings, 20 and 25 crank angle (CA) before top-dead-centre (BTDC). The results show good agreement with experimental data where the effect of heating and evaporation of droplets on combustion phasing is investigated. The results highlight the importance of the accurate modelling of physical processes during droplet heating and evaporation for the prediction of the PPCI engine performance.

This paper presents a numerical analysis of the application of emulsified biofuel (EB) to diesel engines. The study performs a numerical study of three different guide vane designs (GVD) that are incorporated with a shallow depth re-entrance combustion chamber (SCC) piston. The GVD variables were used in three GVD models with different vane heights, that is, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 times the radius of the intake runner (R) and these were named 0.20R, 0.40R and 0.60R. The SCC piston and GVD model were designed using SolidWorks 2017, while ANSYS Fluent version 15 was used to perform cold flow engine 3D analysis. The results of the numerical study showed that 0.60R is the optimum guide vane height, as the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE), swirl ratio (Rs), tumble ratio (RT) and cross tumble ratio (RCT) in the fuel injection region improved from the crank angle before the start of injection (SOI) and start of combustion (SOC). This is essential to break up the heavier-fuel molecules of EB so that they mix with the surrounding air, which eventually improves the engine performance.

The operation of S.I. engines on lean mixtures is attractive in principle since it can provide improved fuel economy, reduced tendency to knock and extremely low NOx emissions. However, the associated flame propagation rates become degraded significantly and drop sharply as the operating mixture is made increasingly lean. Consequently, there exist distinct operational lean mixture limits beyond which satisfactory engine performance cannot be maintained due to the resulting prolonged and unstable combustion processes. The paper presents experimental data obtained in a single cylinder, variable compression ratio, S.I., CFR engine when operated in turn on CH4, H2, CO, gasoline, iso-octane and some of their binary mixtures. A quantitative approach for determining the operational limits of S.I. engines is suggested, compared and validated against corresponding experimental results of other traditional approaches. On this basis, the dependence of the values of the lean mixture operational limits on the composition of the fuel mixtures is investigated and discussed. The operational limit for throttled operation with methane as the fuel is also established.

Currently the most promising solution for marine propulsion is the two-stroke low-speed diesel engine. Start of Injection (SOI) is of significant importance for these engines due to its effect on firing pressure and specific fuel consumption. Therefore these engines are usually equipped with Variable Injection Timing (VIT) systems for variation of SOI with load. Proper operation of these systems is essential for both safe engine operation and performance since they are also used to control peak firing pressure. However, it is rather difficult to evaluate the operation of VIT system and determine the required rack settings for a specific SOI angle without using experimental techniques, which are extremely expensive and time consuming. For this reason in the present work it is examined the use of on-board monitoring and diagnosis techniques to overcome this difficulty. The application is conducted on a commercial vessel equipped with a two-stroke engine from which cylinder pressure measurements were acquired. From the processing of measurements acquired at various operating conditions it is determined the relation between VIT rack position and start of injection angle. This is used to evaluate the VIT system condition and determine the required settings to achieve the desired SOI angle. After VIT system tuning, new measurements were acquired from the processing of which results were derived for various operating parameters, i.e. brake power, specific fuel consumption, heat release rate, start of combustion etc. From the comparative evaluation of results before and after VIT adjustment it is revealed an improvement of specific fuel consumption while firing pressure remains within limits. It is thus revealed that the proposed method has the potential to overcome the disadvantages of purely experimental trial and error methods and that its use can result to fuel saving with minimum effort and time. To evaluate the corresponding effect on NOx emissions, as required by Marpol Annex-VI regulation a theoretical investigation is conducted using a multi-zone combustion model. Shop-test and NOx-file data are used to evaluate its ability to predict engine performance and NOx emissions before conducting the investigation. Moreover, the results derived from the on-board cylinder pressure measurements, after VIT system tuning, are used to evaluate the model’s ability to predict the effect of SOI variation on engine performance. Then the simulation model is applied to estimate the impact of SOI advance on NOx emissions. As revealed NOx emissions remain within limits despite the SOI variation (increase).

The methods of using the viscous vortex particle method, dynamic inflow, and uniform inflow to conduct whirl-flutter stability analysis are evaluated on a four-bladed, soft-inplane tiltrotor model using the Rotorcraft Comprehensive Analysis System. For the first time, coupled transient simulations between comprehensive analysis and a vortex particle method inflow model are used to predict whirl-flutter stability. Resolution studies are performed for both spatial and temporal resolution in the transient solution. Stability in transient analysis is noted to be influenced by both. As the particle resolution is refined, a reduction in simulation time-step size must also be performed. An azimuthal time step size of 0.3 deg is used to consider a range of particle resolutions to understand the influence on whirl-flutter stability predictions. Comparisons are made between uniform inflow, dynamic inflow, and the vortex particle method with respect to prediction capabilities when compared to wing beam-bending frequency and damping experimental data. Challenges in assessing the most accurate inflow model are noted due to uncertainty in experimental data; however, a consistent trend of increasing damping with additional levels of fidelity in the inflow model is observed. Excellent correlation is observed between the dynamic inflow predictions and the vortex particle method predictions in which the wing is not part of the inflow model, indicating that the dynamic inflow model is adequate for capturing damping due to the induced velocity on the rotor disk. Additional damping is noted in the full vortex particle method model, with the wing included, which is attributed to either an interactional aerodynamic effect between the rotor and the wing or a more accurate representation of the unsteady loading on the wing due to induced velocities.

After a shaft failure the compression system of a gas turbine is likely to surge due to the heavy vibrations induced on the engine after the breakage. Unlike at any other conditions of operation, compressor surge during a shaft over-speed event is regarded as desirable as it limits the air flow across the engine and hence the power available to accelerate the free turbine. It is for this reason that the proper prediction of the engine performance during a shaft over-speed event claims for an accurate modelling of the compressor operation at reverse flow conditions. The present study investigates the ability of the existent two dimensional algorithms to simulate the compressor performance in backflow conditions. Results for a three stage axial compressor at reverse flow were produced and compared against stage by stage experimental data published by Gamache. The research shows that due to the strong radial fluxes present over the blades, two dimensional approaches are inadequate to provide satisfactory results. Three dimensional effects and inaccuracies are accounted for by the introduction of a correction parameter that is a measure of the pressure loss across the blades. Such parameter is tailored for rotors and stators and enables the satisfactory agreement between calculations and experiments in a stage by stage basis. The paper concludes with the comparison of the numerical results with the experimental data supplied by Day on a four stage axial compressor.

A dynamic film model is developed in the parallel CFD code GASFLOW-MPI for passive containment cooling system (PCCS) utilized in nuclear power plant like AP1000 and CAP1400. GASFLOW-MPI is a widely validated parallel CDF code and has been applied to containment thermal hydraulics safety analysis for different types of reactors. The essential issue for PCCS is the heat removal capability. Research shows that film evaporation contributes most to the heat removal capability for PCCS. In this study, the film evaporation model is validated with separate effect test conducted on the EFFE facility by Pisa University. The test region is a rectangle gap with 0.1m width, 2m length, and 0.6m depth. The water film flowing from the top of the gap is heated by a heating plate with constant temperature and cooled by countercurrent air flow at the same time. The test region model is built and analyzed, through which the total thermal power and evaporation rate are obtained to compare with experimental data. Numerical result shows good agreement with the experimental data. Besides, the influence of air velocity, wall temperature and gap widths are discussed in our study. Result shows that, the film evaporation has a positive correlation with air velocity, wall temperature and gap width. This study can be fundamental for our further numerical study on PCCS.

This paper, dealing with the problems of mathematical description of the tunnel fire development process with the use of experimental data, outlines the procedure of correction of the existing and obtaining of an improved CFD model package. The improved CFD model was developed on the basis of detailed analysis and comparison of experimental and numerical results, through consideration of the physical structure of all processes affecting combustion. During the analysis it was noticed that the existing CFD model in the part covering combustion based on the so-called steady laminar flamelet model, treats the combustion process almost as a direct correlation between the processes of mixing gasses and heat release rate. This potential deficiency has been overcome by correction of the model in the section defining boundary condition for the burning surface and by establishing a direct correlation between the measured value of the fuel mass change rate and the amount of heat released from burning surface. In this way a modification of complex stoichiometric combustion processes was avoided, while providing the model that better describes and predicts the course of events in this type of complex, anisotropic and turbulent flow of gases in the tunnel.

The calibration of the engine control unit is increased for the development of the whole automotive system. The aim is to calibrate the electronic engine control to match the decreasing emission requirements and increasing fuel economy demands. The reduction of the number of tests on vehicles represents one of the most important requirements for increasing efficiency of the engine calibration process. However, the definition of the design of experiment is not straightforward because the data is not known beforehand, so it is difficult to process and analyse this data to achieve a globally valid model. To reduce time effort and costs the virtual calibration can be a valid solution. This procedure is called software in the loop (SIL) calibration able to develop a process to systematically identify the optimal balance of engine performance, emissions and fuel economy. In this work, a virtual calibration methodology is presented by using a two-stage model to get minimum exhaust emissions of a diesel engine. The data used are from a GT-Power model of a 3L supercharged diesel engine. The model is able to calculate the engine emissions for different engine parameters (such as the start of injection, EGR fraction and rail pressure) and from optimisation process, new injection start maps that reduce pollutant emissions are created.

Cavitation usually appears in aircraft fuel system, which is significant for the operation of engine. Uncontrollable cavitation will cause cavitation erosion to the units of fuel system, while the controllable cavitation can enhance the turbulence of fuel and improve the engine performance. This work along with molecular dynamics was used to simulate the cavitation in RP-3 jet fuel with different temperatures and pressures. The influence of fuel temperature and pressure on cavitation characteristics was studied. It is indicated that the higher the temperature is, the more easily the RP-3 jet fuel cavitate. Furthermore, the influence of pressure on cavitation can be divided into two periods. The lower the fuel pressure is, the faster the occurrence and development of cavitation in RP-3 jet fuel. When the temperature and pressure of the RP-3 jet fuel are set at the region between the line [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]%, the cavitation erosion can be almost ignored, and the dispersion of fuel droplets is almost the best.

Generally, the compression ignition (CI) engine that runs with emulsified biofuel (EB) or higher viscosity fuel experiences inferior performance and a higher emission compared to petro diesel engines. The modification is necessary to standard engine level in order to realize its application. This paper proposes a guide vane design (GVD), which needs to be installed in the intake manifold, is incorporated with shallow depth re-entrance combustion chamber (SCC) pistons. This will organize and develop proper in-cylinder airflow to promote better diffusion, evaporation and combustion processes. The model of GVD and SCC piston was designed using SolidWorks 2017; while ANSYS Fluent version 15 was utilized to run a 3D analysis of the cold flow IC engine. In this research, seven designs of GVD with the number of vanes varied from two to eight vanes (V2–V8) are used. The four-vane model (V4) has shown an excellent turbulent flow as well as swirl, tumble and cross tumble ratios in the fuel-injected region compared to other designs. This is indispensable to break up heavier fuel molecules of EB to mix with the air that will eventually improve engine performance.
