Users voluntarily generate large amounts of textual content by expressing their opinions, in social media and specialized portals, on every possible issue, including transport and sustainability. In this work we have leveraged such User Generated Content to obtain a high accuracy sentiment analysis model which automatically analyses the negative and positive opinions expressed in the transport domain. In order to develop such model, we have semiautomatically generated an annotated corpus of opinions about transport, which has then been used to fine-tune a large pretrained language model based on recent deep learning techniques. Our empirical results demonstrate the robustness of our approach, which can be applied to automatically process massive amounts of opinions about transport. We believe that our method can help to complement data from official statistics and traditional surveys about transport sustainability. Finally, apart from the model and annotated dataset, we also provide a transport classification score with respect to the sustainability of the transport types found in the use case dataset.

Sentiment analysis has gained a lot of attention from researchers in the last year because it has been widely applied to a variety of application domains such as business, government, education, sports, tourism, biomedicine, and telecommunication services. Sentiment analysis is an automated computational method for studying or evaluating sentiments, feelings, and emotions expressed as comments, feedbacks, or critiques. The sentiment analysis process can be automated using machine learning techniques, which analyses text patterns faster. The supervised machine learning technique is the most used mechanism for sentiment analysis. The proposed work discusses the flow of sentiment analysis process and investigates the common supervised machine learning techniques such as multinomial naive bayes, Bernoulli naive bayes, logistic regression, support vector machine, random forest, K-nearest neighbor, decision tree, and deep learning techniques such as Long Short-Term Memory and Convolution Neural Network. The work examines such learning methods using standard data set and the experimental results of sentiment analysis demonstrate the performance of various classifiers taken in terms of the precision, recall, F1-score, RoC-Curve, accuracy, running time and k fold cross validation and helps in appreciating the novelty of the several deep learning techniques and also giving the user an overview of choosing the right technique for their application.

Sentiments is the term of opinion or views about any topic expressed by the people through a source of communication. Nowadays social media is an effective platform for people to communicate and it generates huge amount of unstructured details every day. It is essential for any business organization in the current era to process and analyse the sentiments by using machine learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP) strategies. Even though in recent times the deep learning strategies are becoming more familiar due to higher capabilities of performance. This paper represents an empirical study of an application of deep learning techniques in Sentiment Analysis (SA) for sarcastic messages and their increasing scope in real time. Taxonomy of the sentiment analysis in recent times and their key terms are also been highlighted in the manuscript. The survey concludes the recent datasets considered, their key contributions and the performance of deep learning model applied with its primary purpose like sarcasm detection in order to describe the efficiency of deep learning frameworks in the domain of sentimental analysis.

Online reputation systems are a novel and active part of e-commerce environments such as eBay, Amazon, etc. These corporations use reputation reporting systems for trust evaluation by measuring the overall feedback ratings given by buyers, which enables them to compute the reputation score of their products. Such evaluation and computation processes are closely related to sentiment analysis and opinion mining. These techniques incorporate new features into traditional tasks, like polarity detection for positive or negative reviews. The “all excellent reputation” problem is common in the e-commerce domain. Another problem is that sellers can write unfair reviews to endorse or reject any targeted product since a higher reputation leads to higher profits. Therefore, the purpose of the present work is to use a statistical technique for excluding unfair ratings and to illustrate its effectiveness through simulations. Also, the authors have calculated reputation scores from users' feedback based on a sentiment analysis model (SAM). Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Selecting the optimal set of features to determine sentiment in online textual content is imperative for superior classification results. Optimal feature selection is computationally hard task and fosters the need for devising novel techniques to improve the classifier performance. In this work, the binary adaptation of cuckoo search (nature inspired, meta-heuristic algorithm) known as the Binary Cuckoo Search is proposed for the optimum feature selection for a sentiment analysis of textual online content. The baseline supervised learning techniques such as SVM, etc., have been firstly implemented with the traditional tf-idf model and then with the novel feature optimization model. Benchmark Kaggle dataset, which includes a collection of tweets is considered to report the results. The results are assessed on the basis of performance accuracy. Empirical analysis validates that the proposed implementation of a binary cuckoo search for feature selection optimization in a sentiment analysis task outperforms the elementary supervised algorithms based on the conventional tf-idf score.

We describe the sentiment analysis experiments that were performed on the Lithuanian Internet comment dataset using traditional machine learning (Naïve Bayes Multinomial—NBM and Support Vector Machine—SVM) and deep learning (Long Short-Term Memory—LSTM and Convolutional Neural Network—CNN) approaches. The traditional machine learning techniques were used with the features based on the lexical, morphological, and character information. The deep learning approaches were applied on the top of two types of word embeddings (Vord2Vec continuous bag-of-words with negative sampling and FastText). Both traditional and deep learning approaches had to solve the positive/negative/neutral sentiment classification task on the balanced and full dataset versions. The best deep learning results (reaching 0.706 of accuracy) were achieved on the full dataset with CNN applied on top of the FastText embeddings, replaced emoticons, and eliminated diacritics. The traditional machine learning approaches demonstrated the best performance (0.735 of accuracy) on the full dataset with the NBM method, replaced emoticons, restored diacritics, and lemma unigrams as features. Although traditional machine learning approaches were superior when compared to the deep learning methods; deep learning demonstrated good results when applied on the small datasets.

Abstract In the modern era, Internet usage has become a basic necessity in the lives of people. Nowadays, people can perform online shopping and check the customer’s views about products that purchased online. Social networking services enable users to post opinions on public platforms. Analyzing people’s opinions helps corporations to improve the quality of products and provide better customer service. However, analyzing this content manually is a daunting task. Therefore, we implemented sentiment analysis to make the process automatically. The entire process includes data collection, pre-processing, word embedding, sentiment detection and classification using deep learning techniques. Twitter was chosen as the source of data collection and tweets collected automatically by using Tweepy. In this paper, three deep learning techniques were implemented, which are CNN, Bi-LSTM and CNN-Bi-LSTM. Each of the models trained on three datasets consists of 50K, 100K and 200K tweets. The experimental result revealed that, with the increasing amount of training data size, the performance of the models improved, especially the performance of the Bi-LSTM model. When the model trained on the 200K dataset, it achieved about 3% higher accuracy than the 100K dataset and achieved about 7% higher accuracy than the 50K dataset. Finally, the Bi-LSTM model scored the highest performance in all metrics and achieved an accuracy of 95.35%.

Social scientists and psychologists take interest in understanding how people express emotions and sentiments when dealing with catastrophic events such as natural disasters, political unrest, and terrorism. The COVID-19 pandemic is a catastrophic event that has raised a number of psychological issues such as depression given abrupt social changes and lack of employment. Advancements of deep learning-based language models have been promising for sentiment analysis with data from social networks such as Twitter. Given the situation with COVID-19 pandemic, different countries had different peaks where rise and fall of new cases affected lock-downs which directly affected the economy and employment. During the rise of COVID-19 cases with stricter lock-downs, people have been expressing their sentiments in social media. This can provide a deep understanding of human psychology during catastrophic events. In this paper, we present a framework that employs deep learning-based language models via long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks for sentiment analysis during the rise of novel COVID-19 cases in India. The framework features LSTM language model with a global vector embedding and state-of-art BERT language model. We review the sentiments expressed for selective months in 2020 which covers the major peak of novel cases in India. Our framework utilises multi-label sentiment classification where more than one sentiment can be expressed at once. Our results indicate that the majority of the tweets have been positive with high levels of optimism during the rise of the novel COVID-19 cases and the number of tweets significantly lowered towards the peak. We find that the optimistic, annoyed and joking tweets mostly dominate the monthly tweets with much lower portion of negative sentiments. The predictions generally indicate that although the majority have been optimistic, a significant group of population has been annoyed towards the way the pandemic was handled by the authorities.
