Fuel cells as clean power sources are very attractive for the maritime sector, which is committed to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas and atmospheric pollutant emissions from ships. This paper presents a technological review on fuel cell power systems for maritime applications from the past two decades. The available fuels including hydrogen, ammonia, renewable methane and methanol for fuel cells under the context of sustainable maritime transportation and their pre-processing technologies are analyzed. Proton exchange membrane, molten carbonate and solid oxide fuel cells are found to be the most promising options for maritime applications, once energy efficiency, power capacity and sensitivity to fuel impurities are considered. The types, layouts and characteristics of fuel cell modules are summarized based on the existing applications in particular industrial or residential sectors. The various research and demonstration projects of fuel cell power systems in the maritime industry are reviewed and the challenges with regard to power capacity, safety, reliability, durability, operability and costs are analyzed. Currently, power capacity, costs and lifetime of the fuel cell stack are the primary barriers. Coupling with batteries, modularization, mass production and optimized operating and control strategies are all important pathways to improve the performance of fuel cell power systems.

Fuel cells based on polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) are attractive power sources because they are efficient, non-polluting, and do not rely on non-renewable fossil fuels. Water management is a critical design issue for these fuel cells because the PEM must be maintained at the proper water content to remain ionically conducting without flooding the electrodes. Furthermore, portable PEM power systems should operate at water balance. That is, water losses from the cell should be balanced by the rate of water production from the fuel cell reaction. A portable system that operates at water balance does not require an external supply of water. The rate of water production depends on the cell’s electrochemical characteristics. The rate of water loss depends on the flow rates of reactants and products, transport of water and fuel across the PEM, and the stack operating temperature. This paper presents the basic design relationships that govern water balance in a PEM fuel cell. Specific calculations are presented based on data from hydrogen/air and direct methanol fuel cells currently under development for portable power systems. We will show how the water balance operating point depends on the cell operating parameters and show the sensitivity to off-design conditions.

The modularity and high efficiency at small-scale make high temperature (HT) fuel cells an interesting solution for carbon capture and utilization at the distributed generation (DG) scale when coupled to appropriate use of CO2 (i.e., for industrial uses, local production of chemicals, etc.). The present work explores fully electrochemical power systems capable of producing a highly pure CO2 stream and hydrogen. In particular, the proposed system is based upon integrating a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC). The use of these HT fuel cells has already been separately applied in the past for carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications. However, their combined use is yet unexplored. The reference configuration proposed envisions the direct supply of the SOFC anode outlet to a burner which, using the cathode depleted air outlet, completes the oxidation of the unconverted species. The outlet of the burner is then fed to the MCFC cathode inlet, which separates the CO2 from the stream. This layout has the significant advantage of achieving the required CO2 purity for liquefaction and long-range transportation without requiring the need of cryogenic or distillation plants. Furthermore, different configurations are considered with the final aim of increasing the carbon capture ratio (CCR) and maximizing the electrical efficiency. Moreover, the optimal power ratio between SOFC and MCFC stacks is also explored. Complete simulation results are presented, discussing the proposed plant mass and energy balances and showing the most attractive configurations from the point of view of total efficiency and CCR.

Fuel cells are not a new technology, but they are gaining in popularity and are being intensively developed. The article presents and characterizes various types of fuel cells that are currently of interest to research and development centers dealing with environmental protection issues. These include: alkaline fuel cell (AFC), phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), including direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The operating parameters of the previously mentioned fuel cells were compared. The principle of operation of a fuel cell was described. The growing interest in devices using hydrogen as a fuel also results from the development of Power to Gas technology (P2G). Furthermore, the article presents the potential directions of development and use of fuel cells in various fields and sectors of the economy. Fuel cells can be used in transport. The characteristic of motor vehicles fleet by fuel type in usage in the European Union was presented. The technical specification of commercially available passenger cars using fuel cells with proton exchange membrane was presented. The possibility of using fuel cells in public transport (buses, trains) was discussed. The possibilities of operation of fuel cells in combined heat and power systems (CHP) were presented. Usage of fuel cell technology in large cogeneration units and micro systems was considered. One of the presented cogeneration systems is a combination of fuel cells with a gas turbine. Another possibility of using fuel cells is energy storage systems (EES). Interesting way of using fuel cells can also be Power to Power systems, which were briefly characterized.

Fuel cells are very flexible energy conversion devices and in particular MCFC power generating system are among the most promising for stationary power generation. Potentially, MCFCs can be fed by a great variety of gaseous fuels comprising low calorific values gases like landfill gas. Thanks to fuel processing technologies, like gasification, suitable anode input gases can also be obtained from solid matters. Coal, but also RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel), industrial waste and biomasses are potential fuels for the fuel cell technology after a specific treatment aimed to yield a proper gas for the cell requirements. The gases mentioned above are characterized by low calorific values, presence of inert gases, presence of carbon monoxide and dioxide, presence of various contaminants such as chlorine, sulphur and nitrogen compounds or metals and they can be utilized for power production in high temperature fuel cell units only after a proper clean-up treatment (tars, particulate and sulphur removal). Although interest in alternative fuels for fuel cells has spread in the recent years, most research activity related to fuel treatment has been performed on methane. The biggest drawback deriving from this situation is a general lack of information. When present, moreover, the information is often contradictory. An example of this is given by the acceptable contaminants levels for molten carbonate fuel cells about which there are not values that are based on sufficient experimental evidence. Unfortunately the design of a clean-up system, the choice of the best technology, the optimization of the BOP relies just on these values. In this work a literature research and an analysis of the present knowledge about the effect of impurities in fuel for fuel cells has been preformed. The goal is the definition of concentration levels that can be tolerated by MCFCs and the degradation in performance or the reduction of cell life related to the presence of different pollutants. A second step of the work is the comparison of the levels of impurities tolerated by the cells with those present in the different low calorific value gases in order to define the clean-up requirements. The research priorities in this field have been pointed out. Finally, the project of the fuel cell team of University of Perugia about this topic is briefly described.

The hydrogen fuel cell is a promising technology that supports the development of sustainable energy systems and zero emission vehicles. One of the key technical challenges for the use of fuel cells in the transportation sector is the high durability requirements 1–3. One of the key components that control the overall life time of a hydrogen fuel cell is the ionomer membrane that conducts the protons and allows the separation between the anode and the cathode. During fuel cell operation, the membrane is subjected to two categories of degradation: mechanical and chemical. These degradations lead to reduction in the performance, crossover of reactants between anode and cathode and ultimately total failure of the fuel cell. The mechanical degradation occurs when the membrane swells and shrinks under the variation of the local hydration level. This leads to fatigue of the ionomer structure and ultimately irreversible damage. However, under pure mechanical degradation the damage takes a very long time to occur 4,5. Sadeghi et al. 5 observed failure of the membrane after 20,000 of accelerated mechanical stress testing. This translates into a longer lifetime in comparison to what is observed in field operation 6. The chemical degradation on the other hand is caused by the presence of harmful chemicals such as OH radicals that attack the side chains and the main chains of the ionomer 7,8. Such attacks weaken the structural integrity of the membrane and make it prone to severe mechanical damage. Hence understanding the effect of combining both categories of membrane degradation is the key to accurate prediction of the time to failure of the fuel cell. In this work we propose a novel model that represents accurately the structural properties of the membrane and couples the chemical and the mechanical degradations to estimate when the ultimate failure is initiated. The model is based on a network of agglomerated fibrils corresponding to the basic building block of the membrane structure 9–11. The mechanical and chemical properties are defined for each fibril and probability functions are used to evaluate the likelihood of a fibril to break under certain operating conditions. The description of the fundamentals behind the approach will be presented. Two set of simulations will be presented and discussed. The first one corresponding to standard testing scenarios that were used to validate the model. The second set of results will highlight the impact of coupling both degradation mechanisms on the estimation of the failure initiation time. Abstract Molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) offer several advantages that are attracting an increasingly intense research and development effort. Recent advances include improved materials and fabrication techniques as well as new designs, flow configurations, and applications. Several factors are holding back large-scale implementation of fuel cells, though, especially in distributed energy generation, a major one being their long response time to changing parameters. Alternative mathematical models of the molten carbonate fuel cell stack have been developed over the last decade. This study investigates a generic molten carbonate fuel cell stack with a nominal power output of 1 kWel. As daily, weekly, and monthly variations in the electrical power load are expected, there is a need to develop numerical tools to predict the unit’s performance with high accuracy. Hence, a fully physical dynamic model of an MCFC stack was developed and implemented in aspen hysys 10 modeling software to enable a predictive analysis of the dynamic response. The presented model exhibits high accuracy and accounts for thermal and electrochemical processes and parameters. The authors present a numerical analysis of an MCFC stack in emergency scenarios. Further functionality of the model, which was validated using real operational data, is discussed.

Molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) are high-operating-temperature fuel cells with high efficiency and fuel diversity. Electrochemical reactions in MCFCs are exothermic. As the size of the fuel cells increases, the amount of the heat from the fuel cells and the temperature of the fuel cells increase. In this work, we investigated the relationship between the fuel cell stack size and performance by applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Three flow types, namely co-flow, cross-flow, and counter-flow, were studied. We found that when the size of the fuel cells increased beyond a certain value, the size of the fuel cell no longer affected the cell performance. The maximum fuel cell temperature converged as the size of the fuel cell increased. The temperature and current density distribution with respect to the size showed a very similar distribution. The converged maximum temperature of the fuel cells depended on the gas flow condition. The maximum temperature of the fuel cell decreased as the amount of gas in the cathode size increased.

Our recent communication focuses on small scale and nanoscale type engineering applications of alumina inorganic membrane reactors and reactor-permeator systems for the conversion of renewable and non-renewable hydrocarbons and methane rich streams into hydrogen rich gas for direct inner application and operation of fuel cell systems. This study elaborates on new nanomembrane reactors for the steam-methane/hydrocarbon reforming and water gas shift reactions, including work in the synthesis, manufacturing, modeling and operation of such microreaction systems. The projected small scale reactors, separators and overall reaction systems are of current significance in the area of multifunctional microreactor and nanoreactor design and operation in connection with the operation of fuel cells for transportation, stationary, and portable power generation applications. An added advantage of such systems is the reactive and separative operations of the fuel cell membrane-processor which are combined to convert the hydrocarbon with steam to valuable fuel gas for continuous fuel cell operation. Moreover, the nanomembrane systems under development have the unique characteristics to perform multiple operations per unit volume, such as to utilize beneficial equilibrium shift principles in reactant conversion and product yield through the removal of permselective species (i.e., hydrogen) via the inorganic membrane out of the conversion/reaction zone. In this way, improved hydrogen and product yields can be achieved which exceed the equilibrium calculated yields. Simultaneously, the reaction products, such as synthesis gas (i.e., H2, CO and CO2) at the reactor exit can be used as fuel in mostly solid oxide and molten carbonate fuel cells. The role of the alumina nanomembrane is also in the main conversion and upgrading sections of these feedstocks in order to overcome existing heat and mass transfer limitations and increase the overall efficiency of the microreactor-fuel cell system.

As a clean, high efficiency power generation technology, fuel cell is a promising choice of next generation power device. Widely application of fuel cells will make a contribution to save fuels and reduce atmospheric pollution. In recent years, fuel cells science, technology and engineering have attracted great interest in China. There are more and more Chinese scientists and engineers embark upon fuel cell projects. The government also encourages academic institutions and companies to enter into this area. Research and development of fuel cells are growing rapidly in China. There are many chances and challenges in fuel cells’ research and development. The state of the art of research and development of fuel cells in China was overviewed in this paper. The types of fuel cells addressed in this paper included alkaline fuel cells, phosphoric acid fuel cells, molten carbonate fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells, proton exchange membrane fuel cells and direct methanol fuel cells.

Fuel cell systems are currently regarded as a promising type of energy conversion system. Various types of fuel cell have been developed and investigated worldwide for portable, automotive, and stationary applications. In particular, in the case of large-scale stationary applications, the high-temperature fuel cells known as the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) and the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) have been used as a power source due to their higher efficiency compared to low-temperature fuel cells. Because SOFCs have many advantages, including a high power density, low corrosion, and operability without a metal catalyst, many efforts to develop a SOFC hybrid system have been undertaken. SOFC hybrid systems with a gas turbine or engine show improved system efficiency through their utilization of waste heat and unreacted fuel. Especially, the internal combustion engine has the advantage of robustness, easy maintenance, and a low cost compared to gas turbines, this type is more adaptable for use in a hybrid system with a SOFC. However, the engine should be operated stably at a high air fuel ratio because the SOFC anode exhaust gas has a low fuel concentration. The homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine has both the advantages of SI and CI engines. Moreover, the lean burn characteristics of the HCCI engine make it a strong candidate for SOFC hybrid systems. The objective of this work is to develop a novel cycle composed of a SOFC and a HCCI engine. In order to optimize the SOFC-HCCI hybrid system, a system analysis is conducted here using the commercial software Aspen Plus®. The SOFC model is validated with experimental data. The engine model is developed based on an empirical equation that considers the ignition delay time. The performance of the hybrid system is compared with that of a SOFC stand-alone system to confirm the optimization of the system. This study will be useful for the development of a new type of hybrid system which uses a fuel cell and an optimized system.
