Nonprofit organizations operating in the environmental protection and conservation sector face challenging fundraising issues in collecting from individual donors the money needed to accomplish their goals. The purpose of this study was to investigate which organizational factors can play a role in influencing the ability of these organizations to collect charitable contributions. By applying an extended version of the economic model of giving to a sample of 142 environmental nonprofits from the United States, the results of the regression analyses show that the following factors allow these organizations to attract more donations: devoting a high percentage of donations to programs, promoting the organization’s image through fundraising activities, having a large amount of assets that ensures a sustainable financial structure, and providing online information that demonstrates how the organization has dealt with its mission. Moreover, the study reveals that providing high amounts of disclosure on the organization’s website can have a conditional effect on fundraising expenses by boosting the positive effect of these expenses on donations. The results of this study contribute to the debate on the effectiveness of organizational factors in attracting funds from donors willing to support environmental nonprofits.

As community corrections organizations adapt to changing times, probation/parole agencies work to reform both organizational policy and practice. However, reform is much easier planned than implemented. With little or no formal training on strategic implementation, most community corrections agencies face a complex web of inter- and intra-organizational dynamics and contexts that make implementing reform challenging and sustaining reforms nearly impossible. Using survey and interview/observational data from both adult and juvenile probation in two U.S. states, this chapter examines organizational factors such as culture/climate, cynicism and commitment as key internal issues to consider prior to implementation of reform and during reform uptake. Using dual methods reveals while organizational actors respond similarly on organizational survey response measures, the observational data detail a more nuanced story for understanding implementation. Specifically, findings suggest a need for new training approaches, continued leadership development and improved communication at all organizational levels.

Through good and bad economic times, charitable gifts have continued to roll in largely unabated over the past half century. In a typical year, total charitable gifts of money now exceed 2 percent of gross domestic product. Moreover, charitable giving has nearly doubled in real terms since 1990, and the number of nonprofit organizations registered with the IRS grew by nearly 60 percent from 1995 to 2005. This study provides a perspective on the economic interplay of three types of actors: donors, charitable organizations, and government. How much is given annually? Who gives? Who are the recipients of these gifts? Would changes in the tax treatment of charitable contributions lead to more or less giving? How can charitable institutions design mechanisms to generate the greatest level of gifts? What about the effectiveness of seed money and matching grants?

Abstract In the United States, charitable contributions can be deducted from taxable income making the price of giving inversely related to the marginal tax rate. However, several other types of contributions such as donations to political organizations are not tax deductible. This paper investigates the spillover effects of charitable subsidies on political giving using five cross-sectional surveys of charitable and political giving in the United States conducted from 1990 to 2001. The results show that charitable and political giving are complements. Compared with non-donors, charitable donors are more likely to donate and give more to political organizations. Increasing the price of charitable giving decreases not only charitable giving but also the probability of giving and the amount of donations to political organizations. This effect is robust under different specifications and highlights the externalities created by charitable subsidies.

The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting YouTube channel adoption by independent luxury hotels in Canada and the United States (US). Using a sample of 651 independent luxury hotels in Canada and the US from Smith Travel Research (STR), we tested for YouTube channel adoption. The study used organizational factors of Technology-OrganizationEnvironment (TOE) framework and examined five different hotel characteristics; 1) year built, 2) location, 3) size, 4) facilities and 5) room rate. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the relationships between the five different hotel factors and YouTube channel adoption. Results revealed that only size and facilities (golf, convention rooms and spa) were significantly associated with the adoption of a YouTube channel. This research was the first initiative to explore a relationship between hotel characteristics and YouTube channel adoption by hotels. This study made an essential contribution advancing the knowledge on what factors influence YouTube channel adoption by hotels.
