Crowdfunding is helping to drive financial inclusion by expanding the availability of funds to traditionally excluded and underserved groups of individuals, such as ethnic minority and female entrepreneurs. This study verifies how ethnic and gender similarity between investor and entrepreneur can affect the invested amount in an equity crowdfunding campaign. Using an integrated approach with linear regression and Shapley decomposition, we analyze 8600 investments made by 5996 unique personal shareholder investors in 81 equity crowdfunding campaigns. Results show that similarity patterns seem to significantly influence the amount invested in a campaign but their effects change according to investor’s gender and ethnic origin. In fact, even if female investors give a higher amount to men-led companies, their preference changes if the company is run by a female founder belonging to the same ethnic minority group. Results emphasize equity crowdfunding’s potential as a tool for the financial inclusion of ethnic minority groups of investors and entrepreneurs.

The literature on the biographical backgrounds of entrepreneurs seems to contain many contradictory findings. This situation can partly be due to the assumption that samples of entrepreneurs were homogeneous rather than heterogeneous. It appears as if female entrepreneurs have been less well researched than their male counterparts. Differences in the biographical backgrounds and business situation of, respectively, the white and the black entrepreneurs in South Africa have been assumed but little empirical evidence exists in this respect. Black en-trepreneurs, and female entrepreneurs are in most developed societies' minority groups and have not specifically been studied in depth - hence the present study. The biographical and business backgrounds of 569 South African entrepreneurs (106 Black and 463 White; 136 female and 433 male) were studied. One-way Analyses of Variance and Chi-squared followed by Discriminant analyses were carried out to determine whether, respectively, black and white entrepreneurs and male and female entrepreneurs differed in terms of the variables studied. Significant differences between the total group of male and female subjects were found on only five variables. White and black entrepreneurs differed statistically significantly on 16 of the 30 variables studied. Dit skyn asof minder navorsing oor vroulike as oor manlike entrepreneurs gedoen is. Ten spyte van aannames in die verband, bestaan min empiriese gegewens oor die biografiese agtergronde en sake-situasie van respektiewelik wit en swart Suid-Afrikaanse entrepreneurs. Swart en vroulike entrepreneurs is in meeste gemeenskappe minderheidsgroepe en is nog nie in diepte bestudeer nie, daarom die huidige studie. Die biografiese en sake-agtergronde van 569 Suid-Afrikaanse entrepreneurs (106 swart en 463 wit; 136 vroulik en 433 manlik) is bestudeer. Een-rigting Analise van Variansie en Chi-kwadraat gevolg deur Diskriminant Analise is uitgevoer ten einde te bepaal of respektiewelik swart en wit en manlike van vroulike entrepreneurs in terme van die veranderlikes wat bestudeer is, verskil. Betekenisvolle verskille tussen die totale groep van manlike en vroulike entrepreneurs is slegs in terme van vyf veranderlikes gevind. Swart en wit entrepreneurs het statistics beduidend op 16 van die 30 veranderlikes in die studie ingesluit, verskil.

In this research project, the model of social determination of language shift will be expanded. An attempt is made to fill the gap that still exists regarding the effects on language shift of an ethnic minority group member's confidence in his ability to comply with the linguistic demands of the dominant majority culture. To that end, we investigate the confidence of members of ethnic minority groups and how it is built up, its place in the hierarchy of relevant factors, and their interaction. We detail how this confidence relates to language choice behaviour and language shift. This paper focuses mainly on the theoretical outline and design of the project.

Abstract Background Recruitment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients from an ethnic minority background to research is known to be very low. It has been suggested that interviewer characteristics may affect the willingness of individuals to take part in research, with some researchers advocating ethnicity and gender matching. A study on UK South Asian adults’ experiences of living with IBD provided an opportunity to explore these methodological issues further. Methods The study comprised qualitative interviews with adult patients with IBD identifying themselves as Indian/British Indian, Pakistani/British Pakistani, and Bangladeshi/British Bangladeshi. They were recruited from five clinics across England. Rather than presupposing what participants’ preferences might be, patients were offered a choice of interviewer in terms of the following characteristics: gender, shared experience (or not) of IBD, ethnicity and language (Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Mirpuri, Punjabi, Urdu). These interviewers were a particular type of ‘peer researcher’; distinctive in that they are a professional researchers and assumptions have not been made about the ‘peer’ characteristic which is most pertinent to study participants. Results Adopting this study design required strategic planning in terms of resources and research management. Recruitment to the study was good, with over 40% of those invited (n = 41) returning a response form indicating an interest in taking part. Some had no preference over who interviewed them (8 women, 6 men). Where a preference was expressed, gender was the most important factor. Almost all favoured a female rather than a male interviewer (12 vs. 1). The next most frequently requested option was for an interviewer with personal experience of IBD (n = 11). Very few prioritised the ethnicity of the interviewer. Of those that did, two also requested to be interviewed in a South Asian language. Involvement of ‘peer interviewers’ in the development of the interview guide led to the addition of research questions that would not otherwise have been included. In some interviews, shared experience (between interviewer and interviewee) increased the richness of data elicited which, on occasion, threatened ‘even-ess’ of emphasis across the dataset. Conclusion The study achieved an above average recruitment rate, the sampling frame was achieved, and rich data was generated. The research team intend to adopt a similar approach in future studies where it is anticipated recruitment to the study may be challenging and the topics for discussion are sensitive.

Background. The relationship between ethnicity and suicide risk is ill-understood. It is unclear whether, and if so, how, the ethnic mix of local areas affects risk in local individuals.Methods. Coroners' records of 329 suicides were used to obtain ethnic (White, Afro-Caribbean, Asian) suicide rates in South London (population 902008) for 1991–3. Geographical variation and associations of ethnic suicide rates with small area (mean population 8274) ethnic densities (proportion of residents of given ethnic groups) and deprivation, were examined with random effects Poisson regression.Results. Adjusted for deprivation, age and gender, suicide rates in wards with larger minority groups were higher among Whites (relative rate (RR) per standard deviation (S.D.) increase in minority density 1·18; 95% CI 1·02–1·37) but lower among minority groups (RR 0·75 (0·59–0·96)) (LR-test for interaction χ2=9·2 (df=1); P=0·003). Similar patterns were also apparent for Afro-Caribbeans and Asians separately. With White suicide rates as baseline, ethnic minority status is a risk factor for suicide in wards with small, but a protective factor in neighbourhoods with large minority populations. The RR of minority versus White suicide declines with a factor (relative RR) 0·67 (0·51–0·87) per S.D. increase in local minority density.Conclusions. Minority suicide rates are higher in areas where minority groups are smaller. This effect is ethnic-specific and not due to confounding by gender, age, deprivation or unbalanced migration. Dependent on address, a suicide risk factor for a White individual may protect an ethnic minority individual and vice versa. This has implications for research and prevention.

Abstract Introduction Adequate representation of ethnic minority groups in the medical workforce is crucial for ensuring equitable healthcare to diverse patient groups. This requires recruiting ethnic minority medical students and taking measures that enable them to complete their medical studies successfully. Grounded in self-determination theory and intersectionality, this paper explores the experiences of ethnic minority medical students across intersections with gender and other categories of difference and how these relate to students’ motivation. Methods An explorative, qualitative study was designed. Six focus groups were conducted with 26 ethnic minority students between December 2016 and May 2017. Thematic analysis was performed to identify, analyse and report themes within the data. Results The findings were categorized into three main themes: the role of autonomy in the formation of motivation, including students’ own study choice and the role of their family; interactions/‘othering’ in the learning environment, including feelings of not belonging; and intersection of ethnic minority background and gender with being ‘the other’, based on ethnicity. Discussion Ethnic minority students generally do not have a prior medical network and need role models to whom they can relate. Ensuring or even appointing more ethnic minority role models throughout the medical educational continuum—for example, specialists from ethnic minorities in teaching and/or mentoring roles in the education—and making them more visible to students is recommended. Moreover, a culture needs to be created in the educational environment in which students and staff can discuss their ethnicity-related differences.


This book is about positive youth development (PYD) in Roma ethnic minority youth. Its main distinguishing features are (1) the focus on a large and underrepresented ethnic minority group and (2) a strength-based conception of adolescence (i.e., PYD) that sees all youth as having resources. The book stands apart from current edited books on PYD by focusing on the Roma ethnic minority (one of the most marginalized and oppressed minority groups in Europe) and on strengths and resources for optimal well-being. The international, multidisciplinary, and multisectorial expert contributors to this book address the complexities of Roma life in a variety of cultural settings and explore how key developmental processes and person–context interactions can contribute to optimal and successful adaptation. The conclusions clarify how the PYD of ethnic minority children and youth may be fostered based on the empirical findings reported in this volume. The book draws on core theoretical models of PYD and theories of normative development from the perspective of developmental science to highlight the applicability of these frameworks to Roma groups and nuanced cultural variations in how optimal developmental outcomes maybe come to pass in adolescence. A special focus is on cultural, contextual, and socioeconomic characteristics of Roma to provide a better understanding of what does and what does not contribute to the success of youth particularly in oppressed minority groups.

The present research examined how messages advocating different intergroup ideologies affect outcomes relevant to minority group members’ ability to exert power in exchanges with dominant group members. We expected that salient multiculturalism would have positive implications for minority group members’ feelings of power by virtue of highlighting essential contributions they make to society, and that no such empowering effect would be evident for them in connection with alternative ideologies such as color-blindness or for dominant group members. Results across four studies involving different participant populations, operationalizations of ideology, ethnic minority groups, and experimental settings were consistent with these hypotheses and further indicated that the effects of salient multiculturalism on feelings of power had downstream implications for expectations of control in an ostensibly upcoming intergroup interaction and general goal-directed cognition.

Abstract This symposium addresses issues surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD) across multiple racial/ethnic minority groups, including African Americans, Latinos, and Arab Americans. Using US national data, Kindratt and colleagues challenge the universality of the healthy migrant effect by comparing patterns of cognitive disability across US- and foreign-born Arab Americans. Arab Americans represent an increasingly visible ethnic minority group whose unique history has the potential to clarify knowledge about sociocultural influences on ADRD. Also using US national data, Garcia and colleagues examine within-group heterogeneity among Latinos. They conclude that the number of years and proportion of life spent with and without subjective cognitive impairment differ as a function of ancestry and nativity. Using data from two local communities, Diminich and colleagues investigate mechanisms underlying ADRD risk among Latinos by considering both stress responding and plasma-based AD biomarkers as predictors of Latino cognitive health. Lee and colleagues focus on social relationships and cognitive aging in a diverse, national cohort. They suggest that the quality of social support from social network members may uniquely affect the cognitive functioning of African Americans older adults. Finally, Cerise Elliott from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) will offer perspectives on how racial/ethnic minority group focused research can advance NIA’s goals related to understanding and eliminating ADRD inequalities. In total, this symposium highlights the need to disaggregate racial/ethnic groups, as well as the importance of incorporating both individual and contextual factors in order to fully understand patterns of ADRD risk and resilience.

In a field study conducted in a multi-ethnic selection setting at the Dutch police, we examined the construct validity of a video-based situational judgment test (SJT) aimed to measure the construct of integrity. Integrity is of central importance to productive work performance of police officers. We used a sample of police applicants, which consisted of a Dutch ethnic majority group and an ethnic minority group. The ethnic minority applicants came from one of the four largest ethnic minority groups in The Netherlands, namely groups with a Dutch Antillean, a Moroccan, a Surinamese, or a Turkish background. A critical issue is the often-found construct-heterogeneity of SJTs. However, we found that a construct-driven approach may be fruitful in the development of SJTs aiming to measure one single construct. Confirming our expectations, we found support for the construct validity of the SJT intended to measure the construct of integrity. These results held across ethnic majority and ethnic minority applicants. Therefore, the SJT is a promising test for personnel selection in a multi-ethnic setting.

Based on the argument that the ingroup projection model may not be applicable to the minority group when addressing the effect of relative ingroup prototypicality (RIP) on outgroup attitudes, two studies investigated whether RIP and its effects on outgroup attitudes differ for the majority (Han) and an ethnic minority group (Tibetan). We measured RIP and outgroup attitudes in Study 1 ( N = 164) and manipulated RIP in Study 2 ( N = 145). The results indicated that the Hans presented high RIP, whereas the Tibetans presented low RIP. The effects of RIP on outgroup attitudes were moderated by group size: High RIP among Hans resulted in negative outgroup attitudes, whereas high RIP among Tibetans led to positive outgroup attitudes. These findings imply that improving the minority group’s RIP by making its culture prototypicality equal to that of the majority group would lead to positive outgroup attitudes.
