Scholars have investigated the direct linkage between manager’s age and sustainable corporate performance, however, the mixed results and conflicting findings on the nature of the relationship demand further explanation through the missing constructs. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of sustainable entrepreneurial orientation in the manager’s age and sustainable performance. This study develops a conceptual link by using a dynamic capabilities approach and upper echelon perspective, indicating that younger managers can adopt a more holistic approach towards sustainable practices which can enhance the environmental, social and economic performance of firms. This implies that the relationship between manager’s age and sustainable performance can be explained through sustainable entrepreneurial orientation (SEO) which can play a key role in setting organizational direction towards sustainable development and achieving sustainable business performance. This study contributes to the literature by examining the role of SEO in the relationship between the manager’s age and sustainable performance. This research will help practitioners recognize the importance of minimizing environmental and social problems generating due to organizational production activities. This will lead to profit generation as well as value creation for nature and the local community.

Since environmental issues are becoming an integral part of business performances, policymakers and managers have started recognizing the importance of green innovation towards sustainable business performances. The role of the automotive parts industry is crucial in minimizing environmental degradation and promoting sustainable development. Yet few studies have focused on the connection between green entrepreneurial orientation and green innovation that may affect small and medium enterprise (SME) business performance. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the influence of green entrepreneurial orientation on green innovations, and its effects on sustainable business performances in the automotive parts industry in Thailand. The sample consists of 226 SMEs in the automotive parts industry in Thailand. The partial least square method (PLS-SEM) has been used for the analysis of data. The results of the study show that green innovations have the strongest influence on economic and environmental performances. This study contributes to resource-based view theory by incorporating green innovation as a strategic competency of SMEs’ performance. Further, green entrepreneurial orientation and green innovation can assist SME managers in understanding the factors leading to sustainable performance of businesses.

This study examines the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation of female entrepreneurs and business performance, and analyzes the moderating role of institutional capital on the entrepreneurial orientation-performance link. The results of the study highlight the important role of entrepreneurial orientation, including proactiveness, innovativeness and risk-taking, in directing business performance of female entrepreneurs and the complex interplay among entrepreneurial orientation variables. It also indicates that accessibility to institutional capital, through regulative, cognitive and normative dimensions, encourages female entrepreneurs to be more entrepreneurially oriented, thus leading to better business performance. In addition, this research proposes an integrated framework to guide policy makers on how institutional capital can play a crucial role in helping female entrepreneurs, stressing the importance of becoming entrepreneurial oriented and thus, achieving superior business performance.

PurposeThis study aims to determine the direct effect of entrepreneurial orientation on family business performance. This study also discusses the role of family involvement as a mediating variable and the role of gender as a moderating variable in the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and family business performance.Design/methodology/approachA total of 328 hotels in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, were selected as samples by the convenience sampling method. Primary data is collected through structured questionnaires that are delivered by themselves to key people in the hotel such as owners, directors and key staff (HRD, financial, relationship). Hypotheses are tested by structural equation modeling procedures using AMOS 22.0. Sobel test is used to determine the indirect effect of the mediation variable.FindingsThe results showed that entrepreneurial orientation had no significant effect on family business performance. Family involvement acts as a full mediation in the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and family business performance. Gender acts as a moderating variable that can strengthen the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and family business performance. The results showed support for previous research.Research limitations/implicationsThe results of the study cannot conclude the national family business because it adopts convenience sampling and the sampling area is limited in Yogyakarta. Future research can use a larger sample. This study only researches hotels managed by family businesses, so it is not feasible to conclude for family businesses in general. Future research may choose to use several types of family businesses so that more varied results can be obtained. Future research could also compare hotels managed by family businesses with non-family businesses. The results also found that in addition to gender roles, respondent heterogeneity was an important component in the study of social identity. Therefore, research examining the influence of different cultures on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and family business performance should be an extraordinary topic for future study. Other results from this study also indicate that there is a role for religion in improving hotel performance. Future research is needed to further explore Islamic business modeling for family businesses.Practical implicationsThis finding has significant implications that can help family businesses in developing strategies that are suitable for business management. Entrepreneurial orientation occupies a strategic position in developing sustainable competitive advantage in the family business of the tourism sector especially the hotel business in Yogyakarta for the better. Besides, the results of the study also showed that entrepreneurial orientation had no significant effect on performance. This relationship becomes significant when combined with active family involvement. This finding also shows that entrepreneurial orientation has the potential to have a more beneficial effect because of the active involvement of the family in helping with business management, alleviating business-related problems, and having a significant influence when the family also acts as management.Social implicationsResearch findings indicate the role of gender in strengthening the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and family business performance. This provides a good position for women in the social environment to show achievement. To place women on the side of gender equality and justice in the family business in Indonesia. By opening wider access for Indonesian women in the realm of business management, expanding women's participation in a family business, increasing the role of control for women, and increasing women's knowledge and skills to increase the benefits in managing family businesses so that they have sustainable resilience in the face of global competition.Originality/valueThe results of this study provide a new model in providing an overview of the direct and indirect roles (mediating and moderating) in the assessment of family business performance. This study uses three variables which are important in performance appraisal, namely entrepreneurial orientation (independent variable), family involvement (mediating variable) and gender (moderating variable). Where research that combines these four variables, directly and indirectly, has never been done before.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation (EO) with of SMEs growth, and capital factors and government support as a moderator. Using the data collected from 90 SME’s, the study employs Hierarchical moderated regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. The statistical results lead to the following conclusions: EO has a significant positive relationship with SME's growth, but the role of capital factors and government support as moderator unsupported. The implication of these findings is that the government and financial institutions as the two institutions need to increase their role to encourage the growth of SMEs in terms of information provision, access to markets, capital, and training needs so it can serve as a reference for determining the development strategy of SMEs in the future. From the business owners or SMEs themselves, this research can be used as guidelines for business performance improvement through entrepreneurship-oriented behavior. The hotel industry is one of the sectors that largely increases the environmental burden. Therefore, due to the large number of environmental problems faced by the hotel industry, there is a growing force for the companies and their stakeholders to respond correctly to environmental concerns and to introduce sustainable business practices such as the adoption of green practices. This study used a research model to explore the relationship between green HRM practices in the Egyptian hotels. Structural equation modelling was utilised to analyse data collected from 910 hotels. The research findings revealed that green recruiting and selection, green training and development, and green compensation have a meaningful sustainable performance relationship. The study provides hotel managers with meaningful implications on how to use GHRM in improving their business performance.

This research seeks to address small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)’ performance problems by linking dynamic managerial capabilities to firm performance. In today’s dynamic market environment, it is vitally important for managers/owners of SMEs to possess dynamic capabilities. This study limited its focus to three managerial capabilities namely networking, sensing, and innovation with the moderating role of market dynamism. The data collection process and analysis provided findings that revealed that Chinese SME managers/owners effectively employ managerial capabilities in managing their firms. The hypotheses tests resulted in significant positive relationship between the main variables and performance. The moderating variable, however, had a significant effect only on moderating the relationship between sensing capabilities and performance. The findings from this study suggest that SMEs need to improve their knowledge and application of managerial capabilities in transforming their business performance thereby contributing to the national economy. This study contributes to the dynamic capabilities’ literature by adding to the existing research on the subject. It also provides an understanding of how dynamic capabilities are deployed to build up a solid and sustainable firm performance that resists the waves of market upheavals and it is expected to greatly benefit theory, policy and practice.

One characteristics of startups compared to conventional MSMEs is the use of data. Utilization of data starts from business intelligence & analytics. The knowledge generated together with other dynamic capabilities will support each other in creating value to improve startup business performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between business intelligence & analytics, absorptive capacity, innovation ambiance, and entrepreneurial orientation towards startup business performance.Data obtained by survey distributed by email to 194 startups in West Java. PLS-SEM was used to estimate model in this study. We propose and test a model that integrates the domains of dynamic capability, knowledge management, and entrepreneurship. The main findings show that the use of BI&A has a positive association with the ability to balance competitive innovation activities, supported by entrepreneurial orientation, in turn improving startup performance.This study integrates insights gained from the application of IT value creation and dynamic capabilities perspectives to explain how the use of BI&A is associated with the ambidexterity of innovation and business performance and through entrepreneurial orientation. Salah satu ciri startup dibandingkan UMKM konvensional adalah penggunaan data. Pemanfaatan data dimulai dari business intelligence & analytics. Pengetahuan yang dihasilkan bersama dengan kapabilitas dinamis lainnya akan saling mendukung dalam menciptakan nilai guna meningkatkan kinerja bisnis startup. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan antara business intelligence & analytics, absorptive capacity, innovation ambidexterity, dan entrepreneurial orientation terhadap kinerja bisnis startup. Data didapatkan dari survei yang disebarkan melalui email kepada 194 startup di Jawa Barat. PLS-SEM digunakan untuk mengestimasi model dalam penelitian ini. Kami menguji model yang mengintegrasikan domain dynamic capabilities, manajemen pengetahuan, dan kewirausahaan. Temuan utama menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan BI&A memiliki hubungan positif dengan kemampuan mengimbangi aktivitas inovasi kompetitif, didukung oleh orientasi kewirausahaan, yang pada gilirannya meningkatkan kinerja startup. Studi ini mengintegrasikan wawasan yang diperoleh dari penerapan perspektif penciptaan nilai TI dan kapabilitas dinamis untuk menjelaskan bagaimana penggunaan BI&A dikaitkan dengan innovation ambidexterity dan kinerja bisnis dan melalui orientasi kewirausahaan.

Purpose Guided by the theory of dynamic capabilities and the knowledge-based view of an organization, the purpose of this paper is to examine the crucial role played by entrepreneurial orientation and absorptive capacity in the relationship between strategic flexibility and firm performance, with a specific focus on small firms. Design/methodology/approach The study uses survey data collected from owners of 272 small businesses in India and follows the linear regression method to establish the link between strategic flexibility and firm performance. It hypothesizes that the strategic flexibility of a small firm impacts entrepreneurial orientation, and subsequently its performance, while absorptive capacity further enhances this relationship. Findings The conclusions drawn from the study provide empirical evidence on the mediating role of entrepreneurial orientation in the relationship between strategic flexibility and firm performance. The findings also point out that the potential absorptive capacity of a firm strengthens the relationship between its strategic flexibility and entrepreneurial orientation. Research limitations/implications The empirical findings of the study are limited to small firms from the automotive service industry. Practical implications The study contributes to the existing knowledge on managerial practice by pointing out the importance of strategic flexibility as a dynamic capability and illustrating its impact in the case of a small firm’s performance. Originality/value As yet, there is a dearth of empirical evidence derived from large samples of small firms. The study supplements available literature on dynamic capabilities and knowledge management.

Managing knowledge has become a critical aspect of the contemporary business landscape. In addition, business no longer has profit as the sole purpose of their existence. Therefore, there has been growing impetus for socially and environmentally conscious business actions. The present article takes a dimensional view of the process of knowledge management. The authors disaggregate the process along three dimensions- knowledge acquisition, knowledge dissemination and responsiveness to knowledge and investigate their impact on sustainable business performance. In addition, this article assesses the moderating role of empowering leadership in the relationship between knowledge management components. Among various leadership behaviors, empowering leadership has assumed critical significance owing to growing chorus on providing autonomy and empowerment to employees. This article tests the hypotheses on data collected from manufacturing firms in India. The results demonstrate a positive relationship between dimensions of knowledge management, as well as positive moderation by empowering leadership. Further, the authors discuss implications.

This paper reviewed past literature with the aim of establishing the trends in published literature on dynamic capabilities, entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and business performance of Small and Medium Enterprise’s (SMEs). Based on this review the relationship between dynamic capabilities, entrepreneurial orientation and business performance of SMEs is hinged on Schumpeter theory of innovations, (Schumpeter, 1942) and dynamic capability theory by Teeceet al (1997). Scholars have a common view that the association between EO and business performance is too complex hence moderated by variables. Dynamic capabilities (DC) have a moderating role between predictors of competitive advantage and business performance. The literature reviewed therefore presents the empirical studies globally and locally on moderation of dynamic capabilities on EO and business performance of SMEs. From the review it has been established that there are inconsistent findings in terms of relationships between DCs, EO and performance of SMEs which is justified by the fact that DCs, EO dimensions vary independently and may not be equally valuable across performance metrics or different stages of development of SMEs, besides different situations impacts on the relationship between DCs, EO and business performance of SMEs. In addition there is a dearth of literature on the moderating effect of dynamic capabilities on the relationship between EO and business performance thus calling for further interrogation in the context of developing countries. In conclusion there are mixed results in the linkage between EO and business performance, however effective integration and implementation of EO and DC would help the organization secure competitive advantage in the face of dynamic business environment to foster high business performance.
