This study aimed to identify strategy characteristics for sustainable competitive advantage in businesses utilizing the sharing economy (SE) and to investigate whether such strategy characteristics are related to creating shared value (CSV) and performance. A total of 631 participants who had used goods and services of SE businesses were selected as the unit of analysis in reference to the components of business-to-peer (B2P) and peer-to-peer (P2P) SE business models. Reliability, validity, and goodness-of-fit tests and path analysis were performed using SPSS and AMOS statistical packages. The following results were obtained. First, regarding the relationship between strategy characteristics for sustainable competitive advantage and “social congruence,” which is related to creating shared value, this variable was significantly influenced by “value network” in the B2P model and “strategic innovation” and “strategic resources” in the P2P model. Second, regarding relationship with the aforementioned strategy characteristics and “value of information sharing,” the latter variable was significantly influenced by “moment of truth,” “strategic innovation,” and “value network” in the B2P model, and “moment of truth,” “strategic resources,” and “value network” in the P2P model. Third, regarding the relationship among variables related to CSV and their contribution to performance, “social value congruence” was affected by “value of information sharing,” and these variables had significant effects on “value of participation” in both models. Only “value of participation” made a significant contribution to “performance.”

This study investigated relationships among the market orientation of sharing economy business, marketing innovation, sustainable competitive advantage (SCA), and performance. Attempts are made to understand market orientation from cultural and behavioral perspectives to accelerate marketing innovation and identify measures for SCA and performance building. Frequency, reliability, validity, fitness, and path analyses were performed on 400 respondents, and a structural model was used. The results are as follows. First, functional coordination of the cultural market orientation of sharing economy business with consumer orientation significantly affected product innovation, but competitive orientation’s effect on product innovation was not significant. Competitive orientation and functional coordination significantly affected communication innovation, but consumer orientation’s effect on communication innovation was not significant. Second, market information generation and response to market information of behavioral market orientation of sharing economy business significantly influenced product innovation, but market information exchange’s influence on product innovation was not significant. Even though market information exchange and response to market information had a significant influence on communication innovation, the influence of market information generation on communication innovation was not significant. Third, both product and communication innovation of the marketing innovation of sharing economy business significantly influenced SCA. Fourth, the SCA of sharing economy business significantly influenced market dominating power.

PurposeThis paper is a step toward a sustainability-based view of firm performance, which focuses on how companies may achieve and maintain a competitive advantage in a circular economy that is increasingly dominated by sustainability.Design/methodology/approachThis is a conceptual research paper, which provides a coherent basis for the diverse literature about sustainability, corporate social responsibility, creating shared value, shared value innovation, sustainable design and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.FindingsThe paper complements extant reviews and dynamic frameworks, such as the natural resource-based view and the innovation-based approach, to understand how firms may profit from sustainability in their business ecosystems with multiple stakeholders concerning the triple bottom line beyond financial performance. A firm’s sustainability architecture at multiple organizational levels includes interdependent components reflecting environmental, social and economic sustainability, which enable firms to achieve more value and/or do less harm. The intertemporal renewal of this architecture and its interdependencies with non-sustainability components highlight the dynamics of sustainability transformations for understanding the sustainability–performance relationship.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to sustainability research by developing a conceptual framework, which may be a basis for integrating the variety of management-related sustainability research. It further adds to research into competitive advantage by clarifying how firms may profit from sustainability. Moreover, the conceptual framework contributes to business ecosystem research because it considers internal factors in an organization as well as external factors in a firm’s environment. Finally, this paper offers new insights into strategy dynamics because the intertemporal perspective of changing a firm’s sustainability architecture underscores the need for continuous sustainability transformations.

The importance of learning transfer in ensuring that learning contributes to an organization's competitive advantage has been undermined in organizational practice. There are two major reasons for this: 1) few studies directly explore the relationship between transfer and performance improvement, and 2) most existing transfer models are too complex for practitioners to implement. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the link between learning transfer activities and performance outcomes, and to create a framework for implementing an effective learning transfer solution. A targeted literature review meta-analysis was used to explore the performance impact of training vs. training plus transfer activities. The authors compute “difference scores” representing the percentage of improvement from the transfer activities over training alone. Activities are categorized into a framework of eleven critical learning transfer actions. They then implement the elements of the Learning Transfer Framework in three demonstration projects. By incorporating findings from the literature review, meta-analysis, and the demonstration projects, the authors propose a new transfer framework that is effective and easy to implement. Implications and directions for future researchers are advanced.

The ability to envision future business opportunities, make adequate preparations, take decisive decisions, and influence other stakeholders towards attainment of set objectives is essential for those in leadership positions. This chapter examines the relationship between global psychological capital and business sustainability. A literature review was conducted on the link between global psychological capital and business sustainability. This study revealed that global psychological capital and firm's innovation are important factors determining the position of a corporation in any industry. An update of global mindsets and positive psychological states of those in management positions will determine the ability to lead workforce creativity and drive firm innovation, thereby culminating into sustainable competitive advantage.

This chapter describes the concepts of job satisfaction and organizational commitment; the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment; the significance of job satisfaction in the global workplace; and the significance of organizational commitment in the global workplace. Job satisfaction is important from the perspective of maintaining appropriate employees within the organization. Organizational commitment plays an essential role in determining whether employees will stay with the organization and enthusiastically work toward organizational goals. Retention of employees is one of the most significant outcomes of organizational commitment. The chapter argues that encouraging job satisfaction and organizational commitment has the potential to increase organizational performance and gain sustainable competitive advantage in the global workplace.
