This paper proposes a simulation-based framework for assessing airborne self-separation procedures in flow corridors with consideration of different performance metrics, including air traffic operations, corridor capacity, safety, and environmental impacts. Firstly, the airborne self-separation concept in flow corridors is introduced, followed by an agent-based flow corridor simulation model. Then, data were collected to initialize a parallel-lane flow corridor model connecting A461 upper air route from Beijing to Guangzhou in China which can also simulate aircraft self-separating in the flow corridor. The total control delay, flow corridor throughput, breakout rate, and the CO2 emissions of traffic flow were considered as the impact measurements, and the TOPSIS and entropy method was used to rank the performances of different self-separation procedures. We found that combining multiple objectives into one, the optimum scheme can be obtained to guide the design of self-separation procedures for flow corridors. The research results can be used by airspace managers to dynamically develop appropriate operational procedures and rules for flow corridors given different operational conditions and constraints. Also, the framework proposed in the research may be used to evaluate the design of airspace structure with consideration of multiple objectives.

In order to eliminate the impact of inter-regional differentiation of development demand on the objective evaluation of the development level of smart grid, this paper establishes the evaluation model of weight modification, transmission mechanism and combination of subjective and objective weights. Firstly, the Analytic Hierarchy Process method is used to calculate the weights of evaluation indices of effect layer and then the indices of development demand are used to modify the weights of them. The association analysis and the correlation coefficient are used to establish the weights conduction coefficient between the effect level and the base level. Then the subjective weights of the indices of the base layer are calculated. The objective weights of the indices of the base layer are obtained by using the entropy method. The subjective weights of the base layer and the objective weights obtained by the entropy method are averagely calculated, and the comprehensive weights of the evaluation indices of the base layer are obtained. Then each index is scored according to the weights and index values. Finally, the model is used to quantitatively inspect the level of development of smart grid in specific regions and make a horizontal comparison, which provides a useful reference for the development of smart grids. The relevant examples verify the correctness and validity of the model.

The necessity to model the mental ingredients of norm compliance is a controversial issue within the study of norms. So far, the simulation-based study of norm emergence has shown a prevailing tendency to model norm conformity as a thoughtless behavior, emerging from social learning and imitation rather than from specific, norm-related mental representations. In this article, the opposite stance - namely, a view of norms as hybrid, two-faceted phenomena, including a behavioral/social and an internal/mental side - is taken. Such a view is aimed at accounting for the difference between norms, on one hand, and either behavioral regularities (conventions) on the other. After a brief presentation of a normative agent architecture, the preliminary results of agent-based simulations testing the impact of norm recognition and the role of normative beliefs in the emergence and stabilization of social norms are presented and discussed. We focused our attention on the effects which the use of a cognitive architecture (namely a norm recognition module) produces on the environment.

In this work, a novel distribution-based control strategy of semi-active vehicle suspensions is tested under different conditions. The novelty lies in the use of an appropriate threshold in the operational condition of the control algorithm, with which the operational conditions severity is quantified and the state of the damper is controlled according to the magnitude of the operational conditions and not their sign. The value of the threshold depends on the vibrations induced to the sprung mass by the road profile. In order to be evaluated, the operational conditions of the algorithm are fitted to a t-student distribution. The cumulative distribution function of this distribution is used in order to decrease the fraction of the sample operating with the damper’s stiff state. The strategy is applied to traditional SH control algorithms and is tested using a quarter car model excited by different road excitations. A sensitivity analysis for various threshold values is performed, investigating the impact of adopting the cumulative distribution functioned (CDF) controller to various performance metrics. The results illustrate an increase of up to 13% in the ride comfort of the passengers and increase of 6% in the road holding of the vehicle. Both are achieved by minimizing the switches of the damping ratio up to 80%.

In quantifying potential benefits, it is important to account for constraints arising from clinical workflows. Practice variation is known to influence the accuracy and generalizability of predictive models, but its effects on cost-effectiveness and utilization are less well-described. A simulation-based approach by Mišić and colleagues goes beyond simple performance metrics to evaluate how process variables may influence the impact and financial feasibility of clinical prediction algorithms.

AbstractThe retweet is a characteristic mechanism of several social network services/social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Weibo. By retweeting tweet, users can share an article with their friends and followers. However, it is not clear how retweets affect the dominant behaviors of users. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of retweets on the behavior of social media users from the perspective of networked game theory, and how the existence of the retweet mechanism in social media promotes or reduces the willingness of users to post and comment on articles. To address these issues, we propose the retweet reward game model and quote tweet reward game model by adding the retweet and quote tweet mechanisms to a relatively simple social networking service model known as the reward game. Subsequently, we conduct simulation-based experiments to understand the influence of retweets on the user behavior on various networks. It is demonstrated that users will be more willing to post new articles with a retweet mechanism, and quote retweets are more beneficial to users, as users can expect to spread their information and their own comments on already posted articles.

Wireless sensor networks find several applications in hard-to-reach areas. As sensors have limited battery power, many energy aware protocols based on negotiation, clustering, and agents have been developed to increase lifetime of the network. This article finds limitation with some multi-agent-based protocols as they place the sink node at the centre of the monitoring region which is quite difficult in hard-to-reach areas. Therefore, a multi-agent-based energy and fault-aware protocol for hard-to-reach territories (MAHT) is proposed which uses technique of impact factor to identify the high power capability of the central node and dynamic itinerary planning to make the protocol fault tolerant. Its agent migration technique results in improvement ofn energy efficiency, task completion time and network lifetime. MAHT is simulated using Castalia simulator and the impact of payload size, network size, node failures, etc., on various performance metrics is analysed. The proposed protocol found outperforming over the existing ones.

Abstract The impact of engineered products is a topic of concern in society. Product impact may fall under the categories of economic, environmental or social impact, with the last category defined as the effect of a product on the day-to-day life of people. Design teams lack sufficient tools to estimate the social impact of products, and the combined impacts of economic, environmental and social impacts for the products they are designing. This paper aims to provide a framework for the estimation of product impact during product design. To estimate product impact, models of both the product and society are required. This framework integrates models of the product, scenario, society and impact into an agent-based model to estimate product impact. Although this paper demonstrates the framework using only social impact, the framework can also be applied to economic or environmental impacts individually or all three concurrently. Agent-based modelling has been used previously for product adoption models, but it has not been extended to estimate product impact. Having tools for impact estimation allows for optimising the product design parameters to increase the potential positive impact and reduce potential negative impact.
