The necessity of efficient monitoring of ships in coastal regions has been increasing over time. Multi-satellite observations make it possible to effectively monitor vessels. This study presents the results of ship detection methodology, applied to optical, hyperspectral, and microwave satellite images in the seas around the Korean Peninsula. Spectral matching algorithms are used to detect ships using hyperspectral images with hundreds of spectral channels and investigate the similarity between the spectra and in-situ measurements. In the case of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images, the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) algorithm is used to discriminate the vessels from the backscattering coefficients of Sentinel-1B SAR and ALOS-2 PALSAR2 images. Validation results exhibited that the locations of the satellite-detected vessels showed good agreement with real-time location data within the Sentinel-1B coverage in the Korean coastal region. This study presented the probability of detection values of optical and SAR-based ship detection and discussed potential causes of the errors. This study also suggested a possibility for real-time operational use of vessel detection from multi-satellite images based on optical, hyperspectral, and SAR remote sensing, particularly in the inaccessible coastal regions off North Korea, for comprehensive coastal management and sustainability.

As human activities of the countries in the East Asia have been remarkably expanding over recent decades, various problems in relation to ships, such as oil spill and many other coastal marine pollution, are continuously occurring in the coastal region. In order to conserve marine resources and prepare for possible ship accidents in advance, the need for efficient ship management is increasing over time. Multi-satellite, multi-sensor, multi-wavelength or multi-frequency observations make it possible to monitor a variety of vessels in the coastal region. This study presents the results of ship detection methodology applied to multi-spectral satellite images in the seas around Korean Peninsula based on optical, hyperspectral, and microwave remote sensing. To detect ships from hyperspectral images with a few hundreds of spectral channels, spectral matching algorithms are used to investigate similarity between the spectra and in-situ measurements. In the case of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images, the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) algorithm is used to discriminate the vessels from backscattering coefficients of Sentinel-1 SAR and ALOS-2 PALSAR2 images. The present ship detection methods can be extensively utilized for optical, hyperspectral, and SAR images for comprehensive coastal management purposes toward perpetual sustainability in the future.

Ship detection is a procedure which asserts in fields such as ocean and sea management, vessel detection, marine superintendence, and rein, and also can be applied to exclude extralegal actions. Remote sensing can be utilized as a potential tool for zonular and universal monitoring to attain the forenamed goals. Among the radar images, the precious datum from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is playing a serious duty in remote sensing. Howsoever, vessel detecting in heterogeneous and strong clutter is still a question in this regard. The letter points to a ship detection scheme for SAR images exploiting a segmentation-based morphological operation using entropy. In the presented scheme, the morphological operations are adopted to intercept the background and foreground in the satellite images. The method was implemented and tested on the homogenous, heterogeneous and strong clutter SAR images and the results are promising and showing that the proposed method can improve the vessel detection from homogenous and heterogeneous and strong clutter satellite images

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites produce large quantities of remote sensing images that are unaffected by weather conditions and, therefore, widely used in marine surveillance. However, because of the hysteresis of satellite-ground communication and the massive quantity of remote sensing images, rapid analysis is not possible and real-time information for emergency situations is restricted. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an on-board ship detection scheme that is based on the traditional constant false alarm rate (CFAR) method and lightweight deep learning. This scheme can be used by the SAR satellite on-board computing platform to achieve near real-time image processing and data transmission. First, we use CFAR to conduct the initial ship detection and then apply the You Only Look Once version 4 (YOLOv4) method to obtain more accurate final results. We built a ground verification system to assess the feasibility of our scheme. With the help of the embedded Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) with high integration, our method achieved 85.9% precision for the experimental data, and the experimental results showed that the processing time was nearly half that required by traditional methods.

<p>During the last years, much progress has been reached with machine learning algorithms. Among the typical application fields of machine learning are many technical and commercial applications as well as Earth science analyses, where most often indirect and distorted detector data have to be converted to well-calibrated scientific data that are a prerequisite for a correct understanding of the desired physical quantities and their relationships.</p><p>However, the provision of sufficient calibrated data is not enough for the testing, training, and routine processing of most machine learning applications. In principle, one also needs a clear strategy for the selection of necessary and useful training data and an easily understandable quality control of the finally desired parameters.</p><p>At a first glance, one could guess that this problem could be solved by a careful selection of representative test data covering many typical cases as well as some counterexamples. Then these test data can be used for the training of the internal parameters of a machine learning application. At a second glance, however, many researchers found out that a simple stacking up of plain examples is not the best choice for many scientific applications.</p><p>To get improved machine learning results, we concentrated on the analysis of satellite images depicting the Earth’s surface under various conditions such as the selected instrument type, spectral bands, and spatial resolution. In our case, such data are routinely provided by the freely accessible European Sentinel satellite products (e.g., Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2). Our basic work then included investigations of how some additional processing steps – to be linked with the selected training data – can provide better machine learning results.</p><p>To this end, we analysed and compared three different approaches to find out machine learning strategies for the joint selection and processing of training data for our Earth observation images:</p><ul><li>One can optimize the training data selection by adapting the data selection to the specific instrument, target, and application characteristics [1].</li> <li>As an alternative, one can dynamically generate new training parameters by Generative Adversarial Networks. This is comparable to the role of a sparring partner in boxing [2].</li> <li>One can also use a hybrid semi-supervised approach for Synthetic Aperture Radar images with limited labelled data. The method is split in: polarimetric scattering classification, topic modelling for scattering labels, unsupervised constraint learning, and supervised label prediction with constraints [3].</li> </ul><p>We applied these strategies in the ExtremeEarth sea-ice monitoring project (http://earthanalytics.eu/). As a result, we can demonstrate for which application cases these three strategies will provide a promising alternative to a simple conventional selection of available training data.</p><p>[1] C.O. The goal of this paper is to present a texture clustering system for remote sensing image data. Texture information is useful for image data browsing and retrieval. Authors present the results of self-organizing neural network design for solving the clustering task of gray scale remote sensing image data. The architecture of neural network and the learning algorithms for this network such as: algorithm WTA (Winner Takes All), algorithm CWTA (Winner Takes All with Conscience) and classic Kohonen algorithm WTM (Winner Takes Most - the Winner receives more) are considered. Some experimental results using textures of the Brodatz album, multi-spectral and radar images are also represented.

To accurately detect ships of arbitrary orientation in optical remote sensing images, we propose a two-stage CNN-based ship-detection method based on the ship center and orientation prediction. Center region prediction network and ship orientation classification network are constructed to generate rotated region proposals, and then we can predict rotated bounding boxes from rotated region proposals to locate arbitrary-oriented ships more accurately. The two networks share the same deconvolutional layers to perform semantic segmentation for the prediction of center regions and orientations of ships, respectively. They can provide the potential center points of the ships helping to determine the more confident locations of the region proposals, as well as the ship orientation information, which is beneficial to the more reliable predetermination of rotated region proposals. Classification and regression are then performed for the final ship localization. Compared with other typical object detection methods for natural images and ship-detection methods, our method can more accurately detect multiple ships in the high-resolution remote sensing image, irrespective of the ship orientations and a situation in which the ships are docked very closely. Experiments have demonstrated the promising improvement of ship-detection performance.

Ship detection is an essential maritime security requirement. Current state-of-the-art synthetic aperture radar (SAR) based ship detection methods employ fully focused images. The time-consuming processing efforts required to generate these images make them generally unsuitable for real time applications. This paper proposes a novel real time oriented ship detection strategy applicable to range-compressed (RC) radar data acquired by an airborne radar sensor during linear, circular and arbitrary flight tracks. A constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection threshold is computed in the range-Doppler domain using suitable distribution functions. Detection in range-Doppler has the advantage that principally even small ships with a low radar cross section (RCS) can be detected if they are moving fast enough so that the ship signals are shifted to the exo-clutter region. In order to determine a robust threshold, the ocean statistics have to be described accurately. Bright target peaks in the background ocean data bias the statistics and lead to an erroneous threshold. Therefore, an automatic ocean training data extraction procedure is proposed in the paper. It includes (1) a novel target pre-detection module that removes the bright peaks from the data already in time domain, (2) clutter normalization in the Doppler domain using the remaining samples, (3) ocean statistics estimation and (4) threshold computation. Various sea clutter models are investigated and analyzed in the paper for finding the most suitable models for the RC data. The robustness and applicability of the proposed method is validated using real linearly and circularly acquired radar data from DLR’s (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) airborne F-SAR system.

Due to strong ocean waves, broken clouds, and extensive cloud cover interferences, ocean ship detection performs poorly when using optical remote sensing images. In addition, it is a challenge to detect small ships on medium resolution optical remote sensing that cover a large area. In this paper, in order to balance the requirements of real-time processing and high accuracy detection, we proposed a novel ship detection framework based on locally oriented scene complexity analysis. First, the proposed method can separate a full image into two types of local scenes (i.e., simple or complex local scenes). Next, simple local scenes would utilize the fast saliency model (FSM) to rapidly complete candidate extraction, and for complex local scenes, the ship feature clustering model (SFCM) will be applied to achieve refined detection against severe background interferences. The FSM considers a fusion enhancement image as an input of the pulse response analysis in the frequency domain to achieve rapid ship detection in simple local scenes. Next, the SFCM builds the descriptive model of the ship feature clustering algorithm to ensure the detection performance on complex local scenes. Extensive experiments on SPOT-5 and GF-2 ocean optical remote sensing images show that the proposed ship detection framework has better performance than the state-of-the-art methods, and it addresses the tricky problem of real-time ocean ship detection under strong waves, broken clouds, extensive cloud cover, and ship fleet interferences. Finally, the proposed ocean ship detection framework is demonstrated on an onboard processing hardware.
