Health and safety at work directly influence the development of sustainable agriculture. In the agricultural sector, many farm workers suffer musculoskeletal disorders caused by forced posture. The objective of this research is to assess working postures during melon cultivation in Almería-type greenhouses. The Ovako Working Posture Assessment System (OWAS) has been used with pictures of the tasks. The variables studied by multiple correspondence analysis were as follows: Subtask, Posture code, Back, Arms, Legs, Load, Risk, and Risk combination. The OWAS analysis showed that 47.57% of the postures were assessed as risk category 2, 14.32% as risk category 3, 0.47% as risk category 4, and the rest as risk category 1. Corrective measures should be implemented immediately, as soon as possible, or in the near future, depending on the risks detected.

Health and safety standards are paramount to all agricultural workers and more so to the foreign seasonal farm workers. European, North American and Oceanic agricultural sector heavily depends on the foreign workers migrating temporarily to carryout seasonal agricultural work that are not attractive to local citizens. The aim of this chapter is to critically analyze existing workplace health and safety measures, policies and practices of Foreign agricultural workers with a secondary focus on Canadian public health standards that applies to COVID-19 pandemic control and beyond. During the pandemic, many countries opened international labour migration as a measure of economic recovery. Recent news media reported two Caribbean workers in the Canadian Agricultural sector, had died of COVID-19 complications. The basis of this chapter is the research based evidence that the author carried out on occupational health and safety standards of the population of foreign seasonal farm workers using a multi-method data collection: a scoping review of existing standards, policies and practices and personal interviews with seasonal agricultural workers and their employers. This chapter provides a critical analysis of data from multiple sources and from multiple jurisdictions to uncover gaps and malpractices of existing occupational health and safety practice standards for illness and injury prevention of foreign seasonal farm workers.

Occupational health and safety allows the prevention of occupational diseases and accidents. Agriculture is one of the sectors in which it is important to prevent the musculoskeletal disorders that workers usually develop. The objective of this study is the evaluation of postures adopted by courgette farmers in greenhouses of the Almeria-type. OWAS (Ovako Working Posture Assessment System), an ergonomic evaluation method, is used and applied after making observations to the postures adopted by the workers who were previously video recorded. The results concluded that the four risk levels established by OWAS appeared, with 37.14% being the highest rate and belonging to risk level 2, 33.33% to risk level 1, 28.57% to risk level 3, and 0.95% to risk level 4. Therefore, depending on the severity of the postures adopted in each task, the need for changes in a short, medium, or long period of time was concluded.

Why do farm workers become more vulnerable as countries get richer? As countries get richer, the share of workers employed in agriculture falls. In richer countries, hired farm workers do ever more of the work on the fewer and larger farms that produce most farm commodities. These hired workers include local workers who lack the skills and contacts needed to get nonfarm jobs that usually offer higher wages and more opportunities as well as legal and unauthorized migrants from poorer countries who may not know or exercise their labor-related rights. Government enforcement of labor laws depends on complaints, and vulnerable workers rarely complain. The Prosperity Paradox explains why farm-worker problems often worsen as the agricultural sector shrinks and lays out options to help vulnerable workers. Analysis of farm labor markets in the US, Mexico, and other countries shows that unions and fair trade efforts to protect farm workers cover a very small share of all workers and are unlikely to expand quickly. Most labor-intensive fruits and vegetables are eaten fresh. Unsafe food that sickened consumers led to voluntary industry and later government-mandated food-safety programs to ensure that food is safe when it leaves the farm, with protocols enforced by both government inspectors and buyers who refused to buy from noncompliant farms. This food-safety model offers the most promise for a new era in protective labor policies.

Abstract Background Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are a common health problem among dentists. Dental treatment is mainly performed in a sitting position. The aim of the study was to quantify the effect of different ergonomic chairs on the sitting position. In addition, it was tested if the sitting position of experienced workers is different from a non-dental group. Methods A total of 59 (28 m/31f) subjects, divided into two dentist groups according to their work experience (students and dentists (9 m/11f) < 10 years, dentists (9 m/10f) ≥ 10 years) and a control group (10 m/10f) were measured. A three-dimensional back scanner captured the bare back of all subjects sitting on six dentist’s chairs of different design. Initially, inter-group comparisons per chair, firstly in the habitual and secondly in the working postures, were carried out. Furthermore, inter-chair comparison was conducted for the habitual as well as for the working postures of all subjects and for each group. Finally, a comparison between the habitual sitting posture and the working posture for each respective chair (intra-chair comparison) was conducted (for all subjects and for each group). In addition, a subjective assessment of each chair was made. For the statistical analysis, non-parametric tests were conducted and the level of significance was set at 5%. Results When comparing the three subject groups, all chairs caused a more pronounced spinal kyphosis in experienced dentists. In both conditions (habitual and working postures), a symmetrical sitting position was assumed on each chair. The inter-chair comparisons showed no differences regarding the ergonomic design of the chairs. The significances found in the inter-chair comparisons were all within the measurementerror and could, therefore, be classified as clinically irrelevant. The intra-chair comparison (habitual sitting position vs. working sitting position) illustrated position-related changes in the sagittal, but not in the transverse, plane. These changes were only position-related (forward leaned working posture) and were not influenced by the ergonomic sitting design of the respective chair. There are no differences between the groups in the subjective assessment of each chair. Conclusions Regardless of the group or the dental experience, the ergonomic design of the dentist’s chair had only a marginal influence on the upper body posture in both the habitual and working sitting postures. Consequently, the focus of the dentist’s chair, in order to minimize MSD, should concentrate on adopting a symmetrical sitting posture rather than on its ergonomic design.

This study examined important risk factors and their interactions associated with physical symptoms reported by VDT users. A research model was developed. A survey was designed and conducted among 88 computer users. The results show that risk factors associated with various physical symptoms are different. Screen glare, awkward working posture, and fatigue are important factors related to physical symptoms. Psychosocial factors significantly interact with other variables, such as demographics variables, and contribute to awkward work posture and psychological stress. Workstation design variables significantly affect working postures.

In Germany, a new assessment system (the NBA) is being applied to assess the need for long-term care. The degree of care that is calculated defines the extent of welfare state benefits. Measuring and analysing the need for care in a statistically appropriate way is subject to certain preconditions. This book presents multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) in combination with cluster analysis (HCA) as an innovative methodological approach to dealing with this challenge. The first part provides a theoretical discussion of the need for care; the second part describes MCA and HCA in detail using an example. The book is aimed at all those involved in the measurement and analysis of the need for care.

Resumo Objetivos Identificar aspectos biomecânicos de risco para síndrome do manguito rotador (SMR) e analisar os fatores associados aos quadros encontrados entre trabalhadores de montagem de caminhões. Materiais e métodos Estudo transversal analítico em montadora de caminhões da Grande São Paulo no ano de 2013. Foi realizada avaliação ergonômica dos postos de trabalho com aplicação da ferramenta OWAS (Ovako Working posture Assessment System). Entre os 79 funcionários que participaram da pesquisa, foram considerados casos de SMR quando havia relato de queixas álgicas nos ombros na última semana e a manobra semiológica específica era positiva. Resultados Nove dos 12 postos de trabalho analisados requerem biomecânica de elevação de membros superiores acima do nível dos ombros. A ferramenta ergonômica indica a necessidade de medidas corretivas imediatas em cinco postos de trabalho. O perfil dos participantes era: sexo masculino, idade média de 35 anos e tempo médio de trabalho na empresa de 7,83 anos. A SMR foi detectada em 17,7% dos participantes. O desfecho esteve associado à idade e ao tempo de trabalho na empresa. Conclusão A atividade de trabalho pode levar ao desenvolvimento de SMR em trabalhadores. Os mais velhos e os com maior tempo de trabalho na empresa são os grupos que devem ser acompanhados de forma mais frequente a fim de diagnóstico precoce de casos.

O bem-estar animal tem sido amplamente discutido, abordando as ações e efeitos no processo de criação, transporte até o abate, a fim de se adequar os meios de produção. No entanto, bem-estar é um assunto de ampla abrangência e que atualmente, adequa também as condições de trabalho das pessoas que atuam no setor agrícola. A segurança e a saúde dos trabalhadores é motivo de preocupação, uma vez que a forma como o indivíduo se sente ou como exerce as suas atividades, pode influenciar de forma negativa na produção animal. Diante dessa crescente preocupação, objetivou-se com esse trabalho avaliar os efeitos da tipologia das edificações e do sistema de produção de matrizeiros de frangos de corte sobre as condições de saúde, segurança e ergonomia dos trabalhadores envolvidos na atividade. De posse dos dados coletados, verificou-se que as atividades que exigem o carregamento de peso, principalmente quando realizada por mulheres, podem vir a prejudicar a coluna bem como outros membros corporais. Os demais fatores ergonômicos como concentração de gases, luz e ruído não tornaram o ambiente insalubre uma vez que as instalações são abertas favorecendo a ventilação natural e iluminação.Palavras-chave: ergonomia, produção de frangos, trabalho rural. HEALTH AND SAFETY OF WORKERS IN HARBORS OF BROILERS BREEDER ABSTRACT:Animal welfare has been widely discussed, addressing the actions and effects in the process of creation, transportation to slaughter, in order to suit the means of production. However, well-being is a matter of wide scope and currently, it also suits the working conditions of the people who work in the agricultural sector. The safety and health of workers is a matter of concern, since the way in which the individual feels or how he practices his activities may negatively influence animal production. Faced with this growing concern, this work aimed to evaluate the effects of typology of buildings and the system of production of broilers breeder on the health, safety and ergonomic conditions of workers involved in the activity. With the collected data, it was verified that the activities that require the weight load, especially when performed by women, can harm the spine as well as other body limbs. Other ergonomic factors such as concentration of gas, light and noise have not made the environment unhealthy since the facilities are opened favoring natural ventilation and lighting.Keywords: ergonomics, poultry production, rural work.

Farming is an ancient traditional business, but still it is not a profitable business sector due to risk factor attached to it. It is a high-risk business. Although profit is lucrative, loss rate is also high. Occupational safety is a big issue of discussion for agricultural workers. The methods of working in field in extreme climate (heat, rain) totally depends on environmental factors. Due to rain and droughts, the loss of profit impacts on economic condition and market. Extreme weather condition, heavy workload during their working procedure gives them early old age, bone and muscle problems. So to attain better efficiency of performance and to improve productivity of the worldwide farmers in the agricultural sector it is essential to minimize risk factors. Agricultural workers need sufficient precaution and safety measures at the time of field and machine work to minimize risk factors. Still risk is major discussion topic in agricultural business. So, an effort is taken to prioritize safety majors by fuzzy ahp, and prediction are done by fuzzy logic modelling.

Allergic disorders in the agriculture sector are very common among farm workers, causing many injuries and occupational diseases every year. Agricultural employees are exposed to multiple conditions and various allergenic substances, which could be related to onset of anaphylactic reactions. This systematic review highlights the main clinical manifestation, the allergens that are mostly involved and the main activities that are usually involved. This research includes articles published on the major databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus), using a combination of keywords. The online search yielded 489 references; after selection, by the authors, 36 articles (nine reviews and 27 original articles) were analyzed. From this analysis, the main clinical problems that were diagnosed in this category were respiratory (ranging from rhinitis to asthma) and dermatological (eczema, dermatitis, hives) in nature, with a wide symptomatology (from a simple local reaction to anaphylaxis). The main activities associated with these allergic conditions are harvesting or cultivation of fruit and cereals, beekeepers and people working in greenhouses. Finally, in addition to the allergens already known, new ones have emerged, including triticale, wine, spider and biological dust. For these reasons, in the agricultural sector, research needs to be amplified, considering new sectors, new technologies and new products, and ensuring a system of prevention to reduce this risk.
