The purpose of this study was to assess household solid waste management in areas governed by local administrative organizations (LAOs). The obtained results would be used to assess the amount of air pollution emitted from household solid waste open burning. A survey was employed, through the use of questionnaires, to collect data from a random sample of 4300 households residing in areas governed by 96 LAOs. According to the results, it was evident that a total of 26.17 Mt of solid waste were generated per year, of which 6.39 Mt/year was not collected by the LAOs and was eliminated by households. Moreover, the percentage of waste burned on or outside the households’ property was 53.7%, or an equivalent of 3.43 Mt/year of solid waste burned in open areas. In addition, it was found that 0.66 Mt/year of solid waste collected by the LAOs was burned in open areas and was not eliminated properly. Hence, the total amount of solid waste from these two sources was 4.09 Mt/year, which resulted in the emissions of carbon dioxide equivalent, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitric oxide, and particulate matter of 1247.3 kt/year, 103.0 kt/year, 1.2 kt/year, 7.4 kt/year, and 19.6 kt/year, respectively.

ABSTRAK Pembakaran sampah rumah tangga yang tidak terkendali menciptakan banyak polutan berbahaya. Menurut Riskesdas 2013, satu dari dua rumah tangga Indonesia dilaporkan membakar sampah mereka di tempat terbuka. Oleh karena itu, analisis ini bertujuan untuk menguji hubungan antara pembakaran terbuka limbah padat rumah tangga dan pengalaman ISPA pada anak-anak di Indonesia dari sumber data yang sama. Kami memasang model regresi logistik sederhana dan multivariabel untuk menguji hubungan antara paparan pembakaran terbuka limbah padat rumah tangga dan pengalaman ISPA pada anak di bawah 5 tahun dari data Riskesdas 2013. Hasil analisis menunjukkan hubungan yang signifikan antara pembakaran terbuka limbah rumah tangga dan pengalaman ISPA pada anak-anak Indonesia. Secara khusus, kami menemukan proporsi yang lebih tinggi dari pembakaran terbuka di area ini terkait dengan risiko ISPA yang lebih tinggi. Hubungan ini tetap signifikan secara statistik setelah variabel penjelas lainnya dimasukkan. Namun, kami tidak menemukan hubungan yang signifikan antara pembakaran terbuka di tingkat rumah tangga. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa anak-anak juga dapat terkena polusi udara luar ruangan selain dari polusi udara dalam ruangan yang berasal dari penggunaan bahan bakar memasak yang tidak aman. Dengan temuan ini, kami merekomendasikan semua pemangku kepentingan termasuk masyarakat untuk mengatasi praktik umum pembakaran sampah secara terbuka.  Kata kunci: Riskesdas 2013, pembakaran sampah terbuka, pencemaran udara, ISPA   ABSTRACT Uncontrolled burning of household solid waste creates many harmful pollutants. The Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) 2013 found that one in two Indonesian households burned their solid waste in the open. Therefore, the study is aimed at examining the relationship between open burning of household solid waste and experience of ARI among under-5 children in Indonesia using the same source of data.We fitted simple and multivariable logistic regression models to the 2013 Riskesdas to examine the association between exposure to open burning of household solid waste and ARI experience among U-5 children.The results showed a significant association between open burning of household waste and ARI experience among Indonesian children. Specifically, we found a higher proportion of open burning in the area is associated with a higher risk of ARI. This relationship remains statistically significant after the other covariates were included. We did not observe, however, a significant association between open burning at the household level.These findings imply that children may also be exposed to outdoor air pollution besides from indoor air pollution emanating from the use of unsafe cooking fuel. Given these findings, we urge all stakeholders including the community to tackle the prevalent practice of open burning. Background. Only a third of the total waste generated in slum communities in Kampala is collected and disposed of to the landfill every month. This study assessed the status of household solid waste management and associated factors in a slum community in Kampala, Uganda. Methods. We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study involving 395 households using a semistructured questionnaire and an observational checklist. Proper solid waste management was determined based on possession of waste collection and storage receptacle; collection receptacle ability to minimise nuisances (covered); segregation of waste; presence of flies and other vectors; and collection receptacle fill status. Prevalence rate ratios and their 95% confidence intervals were used as a measure of association. Results. Only, 41.3% (163/395) of the households exhibited proper waste management practices. The majority of the households 85.8% (339/395) owned solid waste storage receptacles, most of which were sacs 61.7% (209/339) and would minimise nuisances 72.9% (245/339). The main type of waste collected was biodegradable materials 56.7% (224/395). The majority of the households 78.7% (311/395) did not segregate their waste. Solid waste was mainly transported to the collection point by pulling the collecting sac 54.4% (215/395). The city authority 73.9% (292/395) and private companies 12.9% (51/395) were the major entities collecting waste. Factors associated with proper waste management were collecting waste in plastic containers (adjusted PR = 1.27, 95% CI (1.04–1.55)), polythene bags (adjusted PR = 0.26, 95% CI (0.14–0.47)), and paper bags or metallic bins (adjusted PR = 0.13, 95% CI (0.03–0.44)) as well as awareness of solid waste management laws (adjusted PR = 1.49, 95% CI (1.20–1.85)) and the dangers of improper solid waste management (adjusted PR = 2.15, 95% CI (1.51–3.06)). Conclusion. Solid waste management was generally poor. As such, a cascade of interventions that address knowledge, physical, and behavioural aspects of solid waste management is required to improve its management in slum communities.

The absence of accurate information on the state of waste is a challenge to the solid waste management system in Syria. The local authorities commonly estimate the quantity of waste produced and its characterisation, which is the starting point for solid waste management planning. So, this paper aims to evaluate the generation and composition of household solid waste in Homs city, Syria. Also, the study presents factors influencing the waste generation rate and the waste composition. The study was carried out in 300 families from four zones in Homs city, and three sampling stages were conducted during the study duration, which started in July 2017 and ended in February 2019. The outcomes show that an average of 0.68 kg/per/day solid waste generated was calculated for the entire study area in Homs city. Also, the data analysis presents that organic waste constitutes the largest component in the waste mixture (69.1%) followed by plastic (10.6%), inert materials (8.7%), paper (4.6%), textile (2.5%), metal (1.2%), glass (1.1%), wood (0.6%), and hazardous materials (1.6%). The multiple linear regression results showed that the adjusted R2 value was found to be 0.557, 0.839, and 0.709 for the waste generation per capita, the daily household organic waste generation, and the daily household packaging waste generation, respectively. Also, according to Pearson’s coefficient values, a positive correlation was found between household waste generation and monthly income (r = 0.626), household size (r = 0.37), and age of the household head (r = 0.517), whereas a negative correlation was found between household waste generation and the education level of the household head (r = −0.649).

Management of solid waste is one of the major challenges faced by the municipalities. Solid waste mainly comprises of organic waste. Proper management of organic waste helps minimize solid waste problem. This study was carried out to assess the production of biogas from canteen’s organic waste as a solution for management of organic waste in Solid Waste Management Technical Support Centre, Lalitpur using innovative urban biogas plant with capacity 1,275 liters for 48 days. The physicochemical parameters of canteen’s waste and bio-slurry were analyzed. Similarly, volume of biogas, volume of methane and carbon dioxide in biogas produced were measured and CO2 reduction from biogas plant was identified. The average values of physicochemical parameters of canteen’s waste lied within the optimum range for biogas production. The biogas plant produced 22.03 liters/kg of waste and 120.47 liters/day of biogas. The produced biogas contained 48.89% methane and 39.11% carbon dioxide on average. The biogas plant could reduce 3.20 tones of CO2 equivalent per annum from 262.50 kg of waste fed for 48 days. The values of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium of bio-slurry indicated it as a better fertilizer. Shapiro-Wilk test showed that the p-value of collected data were greater than 0.05 indicating normal distribution. Linear regression between ambient temperature and biogas production showed that the p-value less than 0.05 indicating significant relationship between them (r2=0.08). The estimated return period of the invested money was 9.5 months in kerosene substitution or 9.7 months in firewood substitution or 9.5 months in LPG substitution. Similarly, the estimated average rate of return was 125.26% in kerosene substitution or 123.72% in firewood substitution or 125.01% in LPG substitution. These results indicated that biogas production using innovative urban biogas plant is better solution for organic waste management. Further extensive and large scale research need to be carried out for the optimization of the biogas plant.
