This paper investigates the hybrid source localization problem using differential received signal strength (DRSS) and angle of arrival (AOA) measurements. The main advantage of hybrid measurements is to improve the localization accuracy with respect to a single sensor modality. For sufficiently short wavelengths, AOA sensors can be constructed with size, weight, power and cost (SWAP-C) requirements in mind, making the proposed hybrid DRSS-AOA sensing feasible at a low cost. Firstly the maximum likelihood estimation solution is derived, which is computationally expensive and likely to become unstable for large noise levels. Then a novel closed-form pseudolinear estimation method is developed by incorporating the AOA measurements into a linearized form of DRSS equations. This method eliminates the nuisance parameter associated with linearized DRSS equations, hence improving the estimation performance. The estimation bias arising from the injection of measurement noise into the pseudolinear data matrix is examined. The method of instrumental variables is employed to reduce this bias. As the performance of the resulting weighted instrumental variable (WIV) estimator depends on the correlation between the IV matrix and data matrix, a selected-hybrid-measurement WIV (SHM-WIV) estimator is proposed to maintain a strong correlation. The superior bias and mean-squared error performance of the new SHM-WIV estimator is illustrated with simulation examples.

Small and pervasive devices have been increasingly used to identify and track objects automatically. Consequently, several low-cost localization schemes have been proposed in the literature based on angle of arrival (AoA), time difference of arrival (TDoA), received signal strength indicator (RSSI) or their combinations. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional empirical AoA localization (TDEAL) technique for battery-powered devices. The proposed technique processes the AoA measurements at fixed reader nodes to estimate the locations of the tags. The proposed technique provides localization accuracy that mitigates non-linear empirical errors in AoA measurements. We utilize two omni-directional antenna arrays at each fixed reader node to estimate the location vector. With multiple location estimations from different fixed reader nodes, each estimated location is assigned a weight that is inversely proportional to the AoA phase-difference error. Furthermore, the actual AoA parabolic formula of the location is approximated to a cone to simplify the location calculation process. The proposed localization technique has a low hardware cost, low computational requirements, and precise location estimates. Based on the performance evaluation, significant location accuracy is achieved by TDEAL; where, for instance, an average error margin of less than 13 cm is achieved using 10 readers in an area of   10   m ×   10   m . TDEAL can be utilized to provide reference points when integrated with a relative (e.g., inertial navigation systems) localization systems.

Abstract The maximum logq likelihood estimation method is a generalization of the known maximum log likelihood method to overcome the problem for modeling non-identical observations ( inliers and outliers). The parameter $q$ is a tuning constant to manage the modeling capability. Weibull is a flexible and popular distribution for problems in engineering. In this study, this method is used to estimate the parameters of Weibull distribution when non-identical observations exist. Since the main idea is based on modeling capability of objective function p(x; ʘ) = logq [f(x; ʘ)], we observe that the finiteness of score functions cannot play a role in the robust estimation for inliers . The properties of Weibull distribution are examined. In the numerical experiment, the parameters of Weibull distribution are estimated by logq and its special form, log , likelihood methods if the different designs of contamination into underlying Weibull distribution are applied. The optimization is performed via genetic algorithm. The modeling competence of p(x; ʘ) and insensitiveness to non-identical observations are observed by Monte Carlo simulation. The value of $q$ can be chosen by use of the mean squared error in simulation and the $p$ -value of Kolmogorov - Smirnov test statistic used for evaluation of fitting competence. Thus, we can overcome the problem about determining of the value of $q$ for real data sets.

Background: Effective 3D-localization in mobile underwater sensor networks is still an active research topic. Due to the sparse characteristic of underwater sensor networks, AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) with precise positioning abilities will benefit cooperative localization. It has important significance to study accurate localization methods. Methods: In this paper, a cooperative and distributed 3D-localization algorithm for sparse underwater sensor networks is proposed. The proposed algorithm combines with the advantages of both recursive location estimation of reference nodes and the outstanding self-positioning ability of mobile AUV. Moreover, our design utilizes MMSE (Minimum Mean Squared Error) based recursive location estimation method in 2D horizontal plane projected from 3D region and then revises positions of un-localized sensor nodes through multiple measurements of Time of Arrival (ToA) with mobile AUVs. Results: Simulation results verify that the proposed cooperative 3D-localization scheme can improve performance in terms of localization coverage ratio, average localization error and localization confidence level. Conclusion: The research can improve localization accuracy and coverage ratio for whole underwater sensor networks.

AbstractThe recent increase of the number of unidentified cadavers has become a serious problem throughout the world. As a simple and objective method for age estimation, we attempted to utilize Raman spectrometry for forensic identification. Raman spectroscopy is an optical-based vibrational spectroscopic technique that provides detailed information regarding a sample’s molecular composition and structures. Building upon our previous proof-of-concept study, we measured the Raman spectra of abdominal skin samples from 132 autopsy cases and the protein-folding intensity ratio, RPF, defined as the ratio between the Raman signals from a random coil an α-helix. There was a strong negative correlation between age and RPF with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r = 0.878. Four models, based on linear (RPF), squared (RPF2), sex, and RPF by sex interaction terms, were examined. The results of cross validation suggested that the second model including linear and squared terms was the best model with the lowest root mean squared error (11.3 years of age) and the highest coefficient of determination (0.743). Our results indicate that the there was a high correlation between the age and RPF and the Raman biological clock of protein folding can be used as a simple and objective forensic age estimation method for unidentified cadavers.

This article examines the impact of institutional quality on bilateral trade flow between Malaysia and selected 25 African Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries. Four institutional qualities were selected from World Governance Indicators with other trade predictors from the period from 1985 to 2016. Using gravity model of trade and Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood estimation method (PPML) technique, the results confirm that government effectiveness, regulatory quality and political stability have an adverse effect on bilateral trade flow among the OIC countries in Africa. On the other hand, these institutional quality variables were considered as a strength for Malaysian economic growth. Therefore, better institutional quality reforms are needed among OIC member countries in Africa in order to accelerate trade, economic growth and development in their region.

AbstractTeachers’ performances also depend on whether and how they are satisfied with their job. Therefore, Teacher Job Satisfaction must be considered as the driver of teachers’ accomplishments. To plan future policies and improve the overall teaching process, it is crucial to understand which factors mostly contribute to Teacher Job Satisfaction. A Common Assessment Framework and Education questionnaire was administered to 163 Italian public secondary school teachers to collect data, and a second-order factor analysis was used to detect which factors impact on Teacher Job Satisfaction, and to what extent. This model-based approach guarantees to detect factors which respect important properties: unidimensionality and reliability. All the coefficients are estimated according to the maximum likelihood estimation method in order to make inference on the parameters and on the validity of the model. Moreover, a new multi-group test for higher-order factor analysis was proposed and implemented. Finally, we analyzed in detail whether the factors impacting Teacher Job Satisfaction are characterized by gender.

Due to the rapid development of indoor location-based services, automatically deriving an indoor semantic floorplan becomes a highly promising technique for ubiquitous applications. To make an indoor semantic floorplan fully practical, it is essential to handle the dynamics of semantic information. Despite several methods proposed for automatic construction and semantic labeling of indoor floorplans, this problem has not been well studied and remains open. In this article, we present a system called SiFi to provide accurate and automatic self-updating service. It updates semantics with instant videos acquired by mobile devices in indoor scenes. First, a crowdsourced-based task model is designed to attract users to contribute semantic-rich videos. Second, we use the maximum likelihood estimation method to solve the text inferring problem as the sequential relationship of texts provides additional geometrical constraints. Finally, we formulate the semantic update as an inference problem to accurately label semantics at correct locations on the indoor floorplans. Extensive experiments have been conducted across 9 weeks in a shopping mall with more than 250 stores. Experimental results show that SiFi achieves 84.5% accuracy of semantic update.

Noncircular signals are widely used in the area of radar, sonar, and wireless communication array systems, which can offer more accurate estimates and detect more sources. In this paper, the noncircular signals are employed to improve source localization accuracy and identifiability. Firstly, an extended real-valued covariance matrix is constructed to transform complex-valued computation into real-valued computation. Based on the property of noncircular signals and symmetric uniform linear array (SULA) which consist of dual-polarization sensors, the array steering vectors can be separated into the source position parameters and the nuisance parameter. Therefore, the rank reduction (RARE) estimators are adopted to estimate the source localization parameters in sequence. By utilizing polarization information of sources and real-valued computation, the maximum number of resolvable sources, estimation accuracy, and resolution can be improved. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods in both resolution and estimation accuracy.

High-G accelerometers are mainly used for motion measurement in some special fields, such as projectile penetration and aerospace equipment. This paper mainly explores the wavelet threshold denoising and wavelet packet threshold denoising in wavelet analysis, which is more suitable for high-G piezoresistive accelerometers. In this paper, adaptive decomposition and Shannon entropy criterion are used to find the optimal decomposition layer and optimal tree. Both methods use the Stein unbiased likelihood estimation method for soft threshold denoising. Through numerical simulation and Machete hammer test, the wavelet threshold denoising is more suitable for the dynamic calibration of a high-G accelerometer. The wavelet packet threshold denoising is more suitable for the parameter extraction of the oscillation phase.

Empirical cumulative lifetime distribution function is often required for selecting lifetime distribution. When some test items are censored from testing before failure, this function needs to be estimated, often via the approach of discrete nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation (DN-MLE). In this approach, this empirical function is expressed as a discrete set of failure-probability estimates. Kaplan and Meier used this approach and obtained a product-limit estimate for the survivor function, in terms exclusively of the hazard probabilities, and the equivalent failure-probability estimates. They cleverly expressed the likelihood function as the product of terms each of which involves only one hazard probability ease of derivation, but the estimates for failure probabilities are complex functions of hazard probabilities. Because there are no closed-form expressions for the failure probabilities, the estimates have been calculated numerically. More importantly, it has been difficult to study the behavior of the failure probability estimates, e.g., the standard errors, particularly when the sample size is not very large. This paper first derives closed-form expressions for the failure probabilities. For the special case of no censoring, the DN-MLE estimates for the failure probabilities are in closed forms and have an obvious, intuitive interpretation. However, the Kaplan–Meier failure-probability estimates for cases involving censored data defy interpretation and intuition. This paper then develops a simple algorithm that not only produces these estimates but also provides a clear, intuitive justification for the estimates. We prove that the algorithm indeed produces the DN-MLE estimates and demonstrate numerically their equivalence to the Kaplan–Meier-based estimates. We also provide an alternative algorithm.
