In aerial refueling, there exists deformation of the circular feature on the drogue’s stabilizing umbrella to a certain extent, which causes the problem of duality of position estimation by a single circular feature. In this paper, a monocular visual position and attitude estimation method of a drogue is proposed based on the coaxial constraints. Firstly, a procedure for scene recovery from one single circle is introduced. The coaxial constraints of the drogue are proposed and proved to be useful for the duality’s elimination by analyzing the matrix of the spatial structure. Furthermore, we came up with our method, which is composed of fitting the parameters of the spatial circles by restoring the 3D points on it, using the two-level coaxial constraints to eliminate the duality, and optimizing the normal vector of the plane where the inner circle is located. Finally, the effectiveness and robustness of the method proposed in this paper are verified, and the influence of the coaxial circle’s spatial structure on the method is explored through simulations of and experiments on a drogue model. Under the interference of a large amount of noise, the duality elimination success rate of our method can also be maintained at a level that is more than 10% higher than others. In addition, the accuracy of the normal vector obtained by the fusion algorithm is improved, and the mean angle error is reduced by more than 26.7%.

Using an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) as the nonlinear estimator within a Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System (GPS/INS) sensor fusion algorithm for attitude estimation, various methods of calculating the matrix square root were discussed and compared. Specifically, the diagonalization method, Schur method, Cholesky method, and five different iterative methods were compared. Additionally, a different method of handling the matrix square root requirement, the square-root UKF (SR-UKF), was evaluated. The different matrix square root calculations were compared based on computational requirements and the sensor fusion attitude estimation performance, which was evaluated using flight data from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The roll and pitch angle estimates were compared with independently measured values from a high quality mechanical vertical gyroscope. This manuscript represents the first comprehensive analysis of the matrix square root calculations in the context of UKF. From this analysis, it was determined that the best overall matrix square root calculation for UKF applications in terms of performance and execution time is the Cholesky method.

Space recognition is a crucial issue for autonomous systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles, walking robots, and autonomous cars. These systems are necessary to obtain information using a camera while moving. However, reduction in recognition accuracy and system size increase has created problems. To solve these problems, we proposed the three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) actuator for image stabilization. This paper proposes a novel initial position estimation method and sensorless attitude estimation method for the three-DOF actuator to further downsize and reduce weight. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified by a magnetic field analysis, using a three-dimensional finite element method and numerical simulations.

An interlaced matrix Kalman filter, which is based on vector observations and gyro measurements, is proposed for spacecraft attitude estimation in this paper. It combines the matrix Kalman filter and cubature Kalman filter to estimate spacecraft attitude and gyro drift bias, respectively. The defects of the original matrix Kalman filter, which could only estimate the attitude parameters of spacecraft, are addressed by the proposed interlaced matrix Kalman filter. In addition, the dimensions of cubature Kalman filter for conventional attitude estimation method are reduced by the designed recursive algorithm. It is noted that the two filters are not independent with each other. Firstly, the attitude quaternion of spacecraft is estimated by the modified matrix Kalman filter. Then, the estimated quaternion is input for the recursive cubature Kalman filter, which is used to estimate the gyro drift bias. Finally, the estimated gyro drift bias is compensated for the measurements of the gyros. Therefore, the precision of the estimated attitude of spacecraft is improved by the interacting process of the modified matrix Kalman filter and recursive cubature Kalman filter. A simulation test is designed to verify the advantage of the proposed method by comparing with the previous method, and the results indicate that the proposed algorithm has better performance on convergence rate and stability.

The present study was carried out to fabricate a prolonged design for tramadol using Kollidon SR (Polyvinyl acetate and povidone based matrix retarding polymer). Matrix tablet formulations were prepared by direct compression of Kollidon SR of a varying proportion with a fixed percentage of tramadol. Tablets containing a 1:0.5 (Drug: Kollidon SR) ratio exhibited a rapid rate of drug release with an initial burst effect. Incorporation of more Kollidon SR in the matrix tablet extended the release of drug with subsequent minimization of the burst effect as confirmed by the mean dissolution time, dissolution efficiency and f2 value. Among the formulation batches, a direct relationship was obtained between release rate and the percentage of Kollidon SR used. The formulation showed close resemblance to the commercial product Contramal and compliance with USP specification. The results were explored and explained by the difference of micromeritic characteristics of the polymers and blend of drug with excipients. Insignificant effects of various factors, e.g. pH of dissolution media, ionic strength, speed of paddle were found on the drug release from Kollidon-SR matrix. The formulation followed the Higuchi kinetic model of drug release. Stability study data indicated stable character of Batch T6 after short-term stability study.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight that, in order to assess the availability of different HVDC cable transmission systems, a more detailed characterization of the cable management significantly affects the availability estimation since the cable represents one of the most critical elements of such systems. The analyzed case study consists of a multi-terminal direct current system based on both line commutated converter and voltage source converter technologies in different configurations, whose availability is computed for different transmitted power capacities. For these analyses, the matrix-based reliability estimation method is exploited together with the Monte Carlo approach and the Markov state space one. This paper shows how reliability analysis requires a deep knowledge of the real installation conditions. The impact of these conditions on the reliability evaluation and the involved benefits are also presented.

Wideband multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) imaging radar can achieve high-resolution imaging with a specific multi-antenna structure. However, its imaging performance is severely affected by the array errors, including the inter-channel errors and the position errors of all the transmitting and receiving elements (TEs/REs). Conventional calibration methods are suitable for the narrow-band signal model, and cannot separate the element position errors from the array errors. This paper proposes a method for estimating and compensating the array errors of wideband MIMO imaging radar based on multiple prominent targets. Firstly, a high-precision target position estimation method is proposed to acquire the prominent targets’ positions without other equipment. Secondly, the inter-channel amplitude and delay errors are estimated by solving an equation-constrained least square problem. After this, the element position errors are estimated with the genetic algorithm to eliminate the spatial-variant error phase. Finally, the feasibility and correctness of this method are validated with both simulated and experimental datasets.

Blood pressure (BP) monitoring has significant importance in the treatment of hypertension and different cardiovascular health diseases. As photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals can be recorded non-invasively, research has been highly conducted to measure BP using PPG recently. In this paper, we propose a U-net deep learning architecture that uses fingertip PPG signal as input to estimate arterial BP (ABP) waveform non-invasively. From this waveform, we have also measured systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP). The proposed method was evaluated on a subset of 100 subjects from two publicly available databases: MIMIC and MIMIC-III. The predicted ABP waveforms correlated highly with the reference waveforms and we have obtained an average Pearson’s correlation coefficient of 0.993. The mean absolute error is 3.68 ± 4.42 mmHg for SBP, 1.97 ± 2.92 mmHg for DBP, and 2.17 ± 3.06 mmHg for MAP which satisfy the requirements of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standard and obtain grade A according to the British Hypertension Society (BHS) standard. The results show that the proposed method is an efficient process to estimate ABP waveform directly using fingertip PPG.
