This study proposes a novel resonance demodulation frequency band selection method named the initial center frequency-guided filter (ICFGF) to diagnose the bearing fault. The proposed technology has a better performance on resisting the interference from the random impulses. More explicitly, the ICFGF can be summarized as two steps. In the first step, a variance statistic index is applied to evaluate the energy spectrum distribution, which can adaptively determine the center frequency of the fault impulse and suppress the interference from random impulse effectively. In the second step, a modified mayfly optimization algorithm (MMA) is applied to search the optimal resonance demodulation frequency band based on the center frequency from the first step, which has faster convergence. Finally, the filtered signal is processed by the squared envelope spectrum technology. Results of the proposed method for signals from an outer fault bearing and a ball fault bearing indicate that the ICFGF works well to extract bearing fault feature. Furthermore, compared with some other methods, including fast kurtogram, ensemble empirical mode decomposition, and conditional variance-based selector technology, the ICFGF can extract the fault characteristic more accurately.

To study the vibration characteristics of the poppet valve induced by cavitation, the signal analysis method based on the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method was studied experimentally. The component induced by cavitation was separated from the vibration signals through the EEMD method. The results show that the IMF2 component has the largest amplitude and energy of all components. The root mean square (RMS) value, peak value of marginal spectrum, and center frequency of marginal spectrum of the IMF2 component were studied in detail. The RMS value and the peak value of the marginal spectrum decrease with a decrease of cavitation intensity. The center frequency of marginal spectrum is between 12 kHz and 20 kHz, and the center frequency first increases and then decreases with a decrease of cavitation intensity. The change rate of the center frequency also decreases with an increase of inlet pressure.

The fault feature signal of rolling bearing can be characterized as the narrow-band signal with a specific resonance frequency. Therefore, resonance demodulation analysis is a powerful damage detection technique of bearings. In addition to the fault feature signal, the measured vibration signals carry various interference components, and these interference components become a serious obstacle of fault feature extraction. Variational mode extraction is a novel signal analysis method designed to retrieve a specific signal component from the composite signal. Variational mode extraction is founded on a similar basis as variational mode decomposition, while it shows better accuracy and higher efficiency compared with variational mode decomposition. In this study, variational mode extraction is introduced to the resonance demodulation analysis of bearing fault. As the results of variational mode extraction analysis are greatly influenced by the choice of two parameters, that is, the balancing factor α and the initial guess of center frequency ωd, an optimized variational mode extraction method is further developed. First, a new fault information evaluation index for measuring the richness of fault characteristics of the signal, termed ensemble impulsiveness and cyclostationarity, is formulated. Second, the ensemble impulsiveness and cyclostationarity is used as the fitness function of particle swarm optimization to automatically determine the optimal values of α and ωd. Finally, the validity of optimized variational mode extraction method is verified by simulated and experimental analysis, and the superiority of optimized variational mode extraction method is highlighted through comparison with two other advanced resonance demodulation analysis approaches, that is, the improved kurtogram and infogram. The analysis results indicate that optimized variational mode extraction method has a powerful capability of resonance demodulation analysis.

As a type of clean and renewable energy, the superiority of wind power has increasingly captured the world’s attention. Reliable and precise wind speed prediction is vital for wind power generation systems. Thus, a more effective and precise prediction model is essentially needed in the field of wind speed forecasting. Most previous forecasting models could adapt to various wind speed series data; however, these models ignored the importance of the data preprocessing and model parameter optimization. In view of its importance, a novel hybrid ensemble learning paradigm is proposed. In this model, the original wind speed data is firstly divided into a finite set of signal components by ensemble empirical mode decomposition, and then each signal is predicted by several artificial intelligence models with optimized parameters by using the fruit fly optimization algorithm and the final prediction values were obtained by reconstructing the refined series. To estimate the forecasting ability of the proposed model, 15 min wind speed data for wind farms in the coastal areas of China was performed to forecast as a case study. The empirical results show that the proposed hybrid model is superior to some existing traditional forecasting models regarding forecast performance.

This paper proposes a new method based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and kurtosis criterion for the detection of defects in rolling element bearings. Some intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) are presented to obtain symptom wave by EEMD. The different kurtosis of the intrinsic mode function is determined to select the envelope spectrum. The fault feature based on the IMF envelope spectrum whose kurtosis is the maximum is extracted, and fault patterns of roller bearings can be effectively differentiated. Practical examples of diagnosis for a rolling element bearing are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The verification results show that the bearing faults that typically occur in rolling element bearings, such as outer-race and inner-race, can be effectively identified by the proposed method.
