There is an increasing interest in water bodies, which make up more that seventy percent of our planet. It is thus imperative that the water environment should be remotely monitored. Radio frequency (RF) signals have higher bandwidth and lower latency compared to acoustic signals. However, water has high permittivity and conductivity which presents a challenge for the implementation of RF technology. In this work, we undertook a novel design, fabrication, measurement and implementation of an antenna for a sensor node with dual ability of underwater and water surface long range (LoRa) communication at 868 MHz. It was observed that the antenna’s performance deteriorated underwater without −10 dB effective bandwidth between 668 MHz and 1068 MHz. The introduction of an oil-impregnated paper buffer around the antenna resulted in an effective 400 MHz bandwidth within the same frequency span. The sensor node with the buffered antenna was able to achieve a distance of 6 m underwater and 160 m over water surface communication to a data gateway node. The sensor node without the buffered antenna was only able to achieve 80 m over water surface communication. These experimental results show the feasibility of using the LoRa 868 MHz frequency in underwater and water surface communication.

The unchecked growth of Eichhornia crassipes can cause significant harm, including covering of the water surface, depletion of oxygen, clogging of river channels, and promotion of the breeding of flies and mosquitoes. These effects can significantly impact farmland irrigation, water transportation, and human health. However, methods for controlling its growth are not ideal, and control using biological and chemical agents can result in secondary pollution. The utilization of E. crassipes as a resource, for example, as animal feed or organic substrates, can not only turn waste into valuable resources, but it can also solve the problem of its growth, thus bringing about economic and ecological benefits. In this paper, the growth and ecological characteristics of E. crassipes, its nutrient composition, and resource utilization approaches were reviewed. The challenges associated with the large-scale utilization of E. crassipes were also analyzed in order to provide references for the control and resource utilization of the species. Regarding challenges such as the difficulty of cultivation and the high cost of harvesting and dehydrating, it is necessary to investigate the proper water surface and coverage characteristics of E. crassipes cultivation to assure adequate biomass and protect the ecological landscape. It is also necessary to evaluate the effect of E. crassipes cultivation on the health of aquatic ecosystems and the safety of the water environment in order to prevent the significant potential ecological and environmental risks. In addition, developing portable, high-efficiency facilities to promote the effectiveness of harvesting, transportation and dehydration are needed, as well as further improvement in the techniques of utilization and assessment of the economic value.

The wireless sensor is deployed to sense large amount of data from the far places. With the large deployment of the sensor networks, it faces major issues like energy consumption, dynamic routing and security. The Energy efficient structure-free data aggregation and delivery (ESDAD) is the protocol which is hierarchal in nature. The ESDAD protocol can be further improved to increase lifetime of wireless sensor networks. The base station localizes the position of each sensor node and defines level of each node for the data transmission. In the ESDAD protocol, the next hop node is selected based on cost function for the data transmission. In this research work, improved in ESDAD protocol is proposed in which gateway nodes are deployed after each level for the data transmission. The sensor node will sense the information and transmit it to gateway node. The gateway node aggregates data to the base station and simulation results show that improved ESDAD protocol performs well in terms of energy consumption and number of throughput.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are of prominent use in unmanned surveillance applications. This peculiar trait of WSNs is actually the underlying technology of various applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) such as smart homes, smart cities, smart shopping complexes, smart traffic, smart health, and much more. Over time, WSNs have evolved as a strong base for laying the foundations of IoT infrastructure. In order to address the scenario in which a user wants to access the real-time data directly from the sensor node in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), Das recently proposed an anonymity-preserving three-factor authentication protocol. Das’s protocol is suitable for resource-constrained sensor nodes because it only uses lightweight cryptographic primitives such as hash functions and symmetric encryption schemes as building blocks. Das’s protocol is claimed to be secure against different known attacks by providing formal security proof and security verification using the Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications tool. However, we find that Das’s protocol has the following security loopholes: (1) By using a captured sensor node, an adversary can impersonate a legal user to the gateway node, impersonate other sensor nodes to deceive the user, and the adversary can also decrypt all the cipher-texts of the user; (2) the gateway node has a heavy computational cost due to user anonymity and thus the protocol is vulnerable to denial of service (DoS) attacks. We overcome the shortcomings of Das’s protocol and propose an improved protocol. We also prove the security of the proposed protocol in the random oracle model. Compared with the other related protocols, the improved protocol enjoys better functionality without much enhancement in the computation and communication costs. Consequently, it is more suitable for applications in WSNs

Mercury ions (Hg2+) pollution in the water environment can cause serious harm to human health. Trace Hg2+ detection is of vital importance for environmental monitoring. Herein, we report a novel design of Ru-MOFs modified gold microelectrode for Hg2+ determination. Ru-MOFs are synthesized directly by the cathodic method on gold microelectrode, with the covered area accurately controlled. Cathodic synthesized Ru-MOFs show good conductivity and are suitable to be used as the electrode surface material directly. The synergy of the pre-deposition process and the adsorption process of Ru-MOFs can effectively improves the performance of the sensor. The results show good linearity (R2 = 0.996) from 0.1 ppb to 5 ppb, with a high sensitivity of 0.583 μA ppb−1 mm−2. The limit of detection is found to be 0.08 ppb and the test process is within 6 min. Most importantly, the senor has a good anti-interference ability and the recoveries are satisfactory. This miniature electrochemical sensor has the potential for on-site detection of trace mercury in the field.

AbstractThe opacity of water to radio waves means there are few, if any, techniques for remotely sensing it and the atmosphere concurrently. However, both these media are transparent to low-frequency sound (<300 Hz), which makes it possible to contemplate systems that take advantage of the natural integration along acoustic paths of signals propagating through both media. This paper proposes—and examines with theoretical analysis—a method that exploits the harmonics generated by the natural signature of a propeller-driven aircraft as it overflies an array of surface and underwater sensors. Correspondence of the projected and observed narrowband acoustic signals, which are monitored synchronously on board the aircraft and by both sensor sets, allows the exact travel time of detected rays to be related to a linear model of the constituent terms of sound speed. These observations may then be inverted using tomography to determine the inhomogeneous structures of both regions. As the signature of the aircraft comprises a series of harmonics between 50 Hz and 1 kHz, the horizontal detection limits of such a system may be up to a few hundred meters, depending on the depth of the sensors, roughness of the water surface, errors due to refraction, and magnitude of the sound field generated by the source aircraft. The approach would permit temperature, wind, and current velocity profiles to be observed both above and below the water’s surface.

Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) consists of a number of sensor nodes that are attached to the human body, and intended for monitor the human body condition. The WBAN system has several wireless communication modules that are used for sending or exchanging data between sensor nodes and gateway nodes or gateway nodes. There are some factors that are used to decide which communication modules should be implemented on WBAN system, including communication efficiency, distance range, power consumption, and the effect of mobility on QoS. In this study, we analyze the impact of the kinematic movement of sensor nodes on QoS parameter of HC-05 Bluetooth and NRF25L01 communication modules, during sending and receiving process among nodes. We assume that the sensor node and gateway node are attached on the limbs to catch the movement. We use Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as delay, jitter, and packet loss, to analyze the impact of movement on communication modules. Based on the experimental result, it was found that the average value of delay and jitter for booth communication modules was slightly influenced by the speed of the sensor node movement. During the sensor node movement and data transmission, we found that the NRF24L01 module have a lower delay and jitter value than Bluetooth HC-05 module. The percentage of packet loss tends to be stable at 0% value, even though the speed value becomes higher.

Water surface plastic pollution turns out to be a global issue, having aroused rising attention worldwide. How to monitor water surface plastic waste in real time and accurately collect and analyze the relevant numerical data has become a hotspot in water environment research. (1) Background: Over the past few years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been progressively adopted to conduct studies on the monitoring of water surface plastic waste. On the whole, the monitored data are stored in the UAVS to be subsequently retrieved and analyzed, thereby probably causing the loss of real-time information and hindering the whole monitoring process from being fully automated. (2) Methods: An investigation was conducted on the relationship, function and relevant mechanism between various types of plastic waste in the water surface system. On that basis, this study built a deep learning-based lightweight water surface plastic waste detection model, which was capable of automatically detecting and locating different water surface plastic waste. Moreover, a UAV platform-based edge computing architecture was built. (3) Results: The delay of return task data and UAV energy consumption were effectively reduced, and computing and network resources were optimally allocated. (4) Conclusions: The UAV platform based on airborne depth reasoning is expected to be the mainstream means of water environment monitoring in the future.

During the past investigations of immunoferritin localization of intracellular antigens in ultrathin frozen sections, we found that the degree of negative staining required to delineate u1trastructural details was often too dense for the recognition of ferritin particles. The quality of positive staining of ultrathin frozen sections, on the other hand, has generally been far inferior to that attainable in conventional plastic embedded sections, particularly in the definition of membranes. As we discussed before, a main cause of this difficulty seemed to be the vulnerability of frozen sections to the damaging effects of air-water surface tension at the time of drying of the sections.Indeed, we found that the quality of positive staining is greatly improved when positively stained frozen sections are protected against the effects of surface tension by embedding them in thin layers of mechanically stable materials at the time of drying (unpublished).
