It is shown that, in spite of the wave radiation into the adjacent liquid, a large group of Lamb waves are able to propagate along piezoelectric plates (quartz, LiNbO3, LiTaO3) coated with a liquid layer (distilled water H2O). When the layer freezes, most of the group’s waves increase their losses, essentially forming an acoustic response towards water-to-ice transformation. Partial contributions to the responses originating from wave propagation, electro-mechanical transduction, and wave scattering were estimated and compared with the coupling constants, and the vertical displacements of the waves were calculated numerically at the water–plate and ice–plate interfaces. The maximum values of the responses (20–30 dB at 10–100 MHz) are attributed to the total water-to-ice transformation. Time variations in the responses at intermediate temperatures were interpreted in terms of a two-phase system containing both water and ice simultaneously. The results of the paper may turn out to be useful for some applications where the control of ice formation is an important problem (aircraft wings, ship bodies, car roads, etc.).

Multiphase flow characterization is an important task for monitoring, measuring or controlling industrial processes. This can be done by means of process tomography. The use of tomographic techniques has been used within the oil industry. One of the potential applications is flow visualization and measurement in producing wells. Research on industrial process tomography consists in obtaining estimated images of a cross section of a pipe or vessel containing or carrying the substances of the process. One category of process tomography is ultrasonic tomography technique. A simple tomography can be built by mounting a number of sensors around the circumference of a horizontal pipe. This includes acquiring and processing ultrasonic signals from the transducers to obtain the information of the spatial distributions of liquid and gas in an experimental column. Analysis on the transducers’ signals will be carrying out to distinguish between the observation time and the Lamb waves. The information obtained from the observation time is useful for further development of the image reconstruction. To obtain the time easily, the time will be calculated from the starting pulse of transmitter signal until the starting peak of receiver signal. Finally Support Vector Machine (SVM) was employed to distinguish of each phase between water and gas.

Steady-state models are presented to describe the wastewater treatment process in two activated sludge systems. One of these makes use of a single complete-mix reactor; the other one involves two complete-mix reactors arranged in series. The in-series system is equivalent to what is known as the “two-phase” activated sludge, a concept which is now being launched throughout Poland in conjunction with the PROMLECZ technology under implementation. Analysis of the mathematical models has revealed the following: (1) treatment efficiency, excess sludge production, energy consumption, and the degree of sludge stabilization are identical in the two systems; (2) there exists a technological equivalence of “two-phase” sludge with “single-phase” sludge; (3) the “two-phase” system has no technological advantage over the “single-phase” system.

The distribution kinetics of 35 2-furylethylene derivatives in two-phase system 1-octanol-water was investigated. The transport rate parameters in direction water-1-octanol (l1) and backwards (l2) are partition coefficient P = l1/l2 dependent according to equations l1 = logP - log(βP + 1) + const., l2 = -log(βP + 1) + const., const. = -5.600, β = 0.261. Importance of this finding for assesment of distribution of compounds under investigation in biosystems and also the suitability of the presented method for determination of partition coefficients are discussed.
