In this paper, the characterization of a whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator applied in a novel micro-opto-electro-mechanical system (MOEMS) gyroscope was investigated. The WGM optical transmission coupling model was analyzed and compared by adjusting key parameters, such as the cavity radius, the waveguide width, and the gap between them for silicon and silicon nitride materials in simulations, which will greatly affect the quality factor (Q) of the WGM resonator. Furthermore, the structural parameters of the disk resonant gyroscope were also optimized. Then, the fabrication process was optimized to overcome the difficulties in the realization of micro-optical devices. Finally, a gyroscope prototype with the integrated WGM resonator was verified experimentally. The scale factor and bias instability performance of the MOEMS gyroscope was 2.63 mv/°/s and 4.0339°/h, respectively.

ABSTRACTPhysical properties and structural parameters have been measured for ropes of nylon 6 as a function of the number of use operations. The fractional content of the α crystal form, sound velocity, birefringence, tensile strength and length all increase systematically and significantly with increasing the number of use operations. The fractional content of the γ crystal form and fiber diameter decrease with use. These trends indicate that the measurement of such properties and structural parameters, especially the length, provide a possible basis for establishing a reliable, rapid, and convenient nondestructive characterization method to predict the remaining service life of nylon 6 ropes.

Porosity variations induced by swelling agent exchange were studied in a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer. Standard methods were used in the characterization of copolymer porosity in the dry state and the results were compared with related structural parameters derived from small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements as developed for the characterization of two-phase systems. The SAXS method was also used for porosity determination in swollen samples. The differences in the porosity of dry samples were found to be an effect of the drying process, while in the swollen state the sample swells and deswells isotropically.

AbstractWhile terahertz spectroscopy can provide valuable information regarding the charge transport properties in semiconductors, its application for the characterization of low-conductive two-dimensional layers, i.e., σs <  < 1 mS, remains elusive. This is primarily due to the low sensitivity of direct transmission measurements to such small sheet conductivity levels. In this work, we discuss harnessing the extraordinary optical transmission through gratings consisting of metallic stripes to characterize such low-conductive two-dimensional layers. We analyze the geometric tradeoffs in these structures and provide physical insights, ultimately leading to general design guidelines for experiments enabling non-contact, non-destructive, highly sensitive characterization of such layers.

In the last decade, an increasingly common method of maize stover management is to use it for energy generation, including anaerobic digestion for biogas production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to provide a chemical and structural characterization of maize stover fractions and, based on these parameters, to evaluate the potential application of these fractions, including forbiogas production. In the study, maize stover fractions, including cobs, husks, leaves and stalks, were used. The biomass samples were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction and analysis of elemental composition. Among all maize stover fractions, stalks showed the highest C:N ratio, degree of crystallinity and cellulose and lignin contents. The high crystallinity index of stalks (38%) is associated with their high cellulose content (44.87%). FTIR analysis showed that the spectrum of maize stalks is characterized by the highest intensity of bands at 1512 cm−1 and 1384 cm−1, which are the characteristic bands of lignin and cellulose. Obtained results indicate that the maize stover fraction has an influence on the chemical and structural parameters. Moreover, presented results indicate that stalks are characterized by the most favorable chemical parameters for biogas production.

ABSTRACTA large variety of EMD and HTMD samples with various oxygen and water contents and various structural parameters Pr and Mt has been prepared. We show that the physico-chemical and structural parameters of the λ-MnO2 compounds are related to the synthesis conditions. New compounds were obtained with unusual amounts of intergrowth and twinning defects. The Li insertion study focuses on a comprehensive investigation of the relationships between the material characteristics of the samples and their Li insertion behavior, and on the structural characterization of selected compounds after cycling. The oxygen content drastically affects the shape of the discharge curve after the first cycle and the total reversible capacity. The amount of structural water has an influence on the transformation kinetics of the starting phase. For optimized oxygen content (y= 2 in MnOY), the intrinsic reversible Li insertion capacity is maximum when the amount of microtwinning defects is minimum and when the structure is either mostly Ramsdellite or faulted Pyrolusite. Results show that, upon cycling, the λ-MnO2 structure seems to evoluate towards less Pyrolusite defects together with the apparition of new kinds of defects. This work shows that λ-MnO2, compounds could be good candidates for the cathode application of Li-metal rechargeable batteries, provided that the physico-chemical and structural parameters of the starting compound are well chosen.

AbstractThis review classifies and analyzes over fifty heterohepta- and heterooctanuclear platinum clusters. There are eight types of metal combinations in heteroheptanuclear: Pt6M, Pt5M2, Pt4M3, Pt3M4, Pt2M5, PtM6, Pt3Hg2Ru2 and Pt2Os3Fe2. The seven metal atoms are in a wide variety of arrangements, with the most common being one in which the central M atom (mostly M(I)) is sandwiched by two M3 triangles. Another arrangement often found is an octahedron of M6 atoms asymmetrically capped by an M atom. The shortest Pt-M bond distances (non-transition and transition) are 2.326(1) Å (M = Ga) and 2.537(6) Å (M = Fe). The shortest Pt-Pt bond distance is 2.576(2) Å.In heterooctanuclear platinum clusters there are eight types of metal combinations: Pt6M2, Pt4M4, Pt3Ru5, Pt2M6, PtM7, Pt2W4Ni2, PtAu6Hg and PtAu5Hg2. From a structural point of view, the clusters are complex with bicapped octahedrons of eight metal atoms prevailing. The shortest Pt-M bond distances (non-transition and transition) are 2.651(3) Å (M = Hg) and 2.624(1) Å (M = Os). The shortest Pt-Pt bond distance is 2.622(1) Å. These values are somewhat longer than those in the heteroheptanuclear clusters. Several relationships between the structural parameters were found, and are discussed and compared with the smaller heterometallic platinum clusters
