In this paper, the concept design of intelligent technical textile blocks implemented with optical fibers that include fiber Bragg gratings for strain and temperature sensing is briefly introduced. In addition to the main design of the system, a design of measurement blocks with integrated fiber Bragg grating elements for strain measurement is also presented. In the basic measurement, the created textile block was tested for deformation sensitivity when a load was applied. Moreover, a unique robust and low profile connector was designed, created and verified. The fibers are terminated with GRIN lenses, allowing easy manipulation and completion of the connector in the field, with an average insertion loss of 5.5 dB.

In this study, silica glass, optical fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are used for torque-induced strain monitoring in carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) hollow shafts toward the development of a methodology for structural load monitoring. Optical fibers with gratings are embedded during shaft manufacturing, by an industrial filament winding process, along different orientations with respect to its central axis and surface mounted after production. Experimental results are supported by numerical modeling of the shaft with appropriate boundary conditions and homogenized material properties. For an applied torque up to 800 Nm, the strain sensitivity of an embedded grating positioned along the reinforcing fibers’ direction winded under 55° is in the order of 3.6 pm/Nm, while this value is more than 4× times higher than the other examined orientations. The study also shows that surface-mounted optical fiber Bragg gratings along the reinforcing carbon fibers’ direction perform equally well in monitoring strains in composite shafts under torque.

This review discusses recent achievements on grating fabrications in polymer optical fibers doped with photosensitive materials. First, different photosensitive dopants in polymer optical fibers (POFs) are summarized, and their refractive index change mechanisms are discussed. Then, several different doping methods to fabricate the photosensitive POFs are presented. Following that, the principles of gratings, including standard fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs), chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs), phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings (PSFBGs), and long period fiber gratings (LPFGs), are reported. Finally, fabrications of different gratings based on photosensitive POFs in the last 20 years are reported. We present our article clearly and logically, so that it will be helpful for researchers to explore a broad perspective on this proposed topic. Overall, the content provides a comprehensive overview of photosensitive POF fabrications and grating inscriptions in photosensitive POFs, including previous breakthroughs and recent advancements.
