Microseismic (MS) source location is a fundamental and critical task in mine MS monitoring. The traditional ray tracing-based location method can be easily affected by many factors, such as multi-ray path effects, waveform focusing and defocusing of wavefield propagation, and low picking precision of seismic phase arrival. By contrast, the Gaussian beam reverse-time migration (GBRTM) location method can effectively and correctly model the influences of multi-path effects and wavefield focusing and defocusing in complex 3D media, and it takes advantages of the maximum energy focusing point as the source location with the autocorrelation imaging condition, which drastically reduces the requirements of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and picking accuracy of P-wave arrival. The Gaussian beam technique has been successfully applied in locating natural earthquake events and hydraulic fracturing-induced MS events in one-dimensional (1D) or simple two-dimensional (2D) velocity models. The novelty of this study is that we attempted to introduce the GBRTM technique into a mine MS event location application and considered utilizing a high-resolution tomographic 3D velocity model for wavefield back propagation. Firstly, in the synthetic test, the GBRTM location results using the correct 2D velocity model and different homogeneous velocity models are compared to show the importance of velocity model accuracy. Then, it was applied and verified by eight location premeasured blasting events. The synthetic results show that the spectrum characteristics of the recorded blasting waveforms are more complicated than those generated by the ideal Ricker wavelet, which provides a pragmatic way to evaluate the effectiveness and robustness of the MS event location method. The GBRTM location method does not need a highly accurate picking of phase arrival, just a simple detection criterion that the first arrival waveform can meet the windowing requirements of wavefield back propagation, which is beneficial for highly accurate and automatic MS event location. The GBRTM location accuracy using an appropriate 3D velocity model is much higher than that of using a homogeneous or 1D velocity model, emphasizing that a high-resolution velocity model is very critical to the GBRTM location method. The average location error of the GBRTM location method for the eight blasting events is just 17.0 m, which is better than that of the ray tracing method using the same 3D velocity model (26.2 m).

Abstract. A sparse 3D seismic survey was acquired over the Blötberget iron-oxide deposits of the Ludvika Mines in south-central Sweden. The main aim of the survey was to delineate the deeper extension of the mineralisation and to better understand its 3D nature and associated fault systems for mine planning purposes. To obtain a high-quality seismic image in depth, we applied time-domain 3D acoustic full-waveform inversion (FWI) to build a high-resolution P-wave velocity model. This model was subsequently used for pre-stack depth imaging with reverse time migration (RTM) to produce the complementary reflectivity section. We developed a data preprocessing workflow and inversion strategy for the successful implementation of FWI in the hardrock environment. We obtained a high-fidelity velocity model using FWI and assessed its robustness. We extensively tested and optimised the parameters associated with the RTM method for subsequent depth imaging using different velocity models: a constant velocity model, a model built using first-arrival traveltime tomography and a velocity model derived by FWI. We compare our RTM results with a priori data available in the area. We conclude that, from all tested velocity models, the FWI velocity model in combination with the subsequent RTM step, provided the most focussed image of the mineralisation and we successfully mapped its 3D geometrical nature. In particular, a major reflector interpreted as a cross-cutting fault, which is restricting the deeper extension of the mineralisation with depth, and several other fault structures which were earlier not imaged were also delineated. We believe that a thorough analysis of the depth images derived with the combined FWIRTM approach that we presented here can provide more details which will help with better estimation of areas with high mineralization, better mine planning and safety measures.

Reverse-time migration is a well-known method based on a single-scattering approximation; it is designed to obtain seismic images in the case of a complex subsurface. It can, however, be a very time-consuming task because the number of computations is directly proportional to the number of processed sources. In the context of velocity model-building, iterative approaches require that one derives a series of migrated sections for different velocity models. We propose to replace the summation over sources by a summation over depth offsets or time delays defined in the subsurface. For that, we have developed a new relationship between two migrated sections obtained for two different velocity models. Starting from one of the two images, we obtain a second section correctly and efficiently. For each time delay, we compute a generalized source term by extending the concept of exploding reflector to nonzero offset. We obtain the final migrated section by solving the same wave equation in the perturbed model with the modified source term. Our work included testing the methodology on 2D synthetic data sets, particularly when the initial and perturbed velocity models differ greatly.

The imaging of steep salt boundaries has received much attention with the advent of improved wider azimuth acquisition designs and advanced imaging techniques such as reverse time migration (RTM), for example. However, despite these advancements in capability, there are cases in which the salt boundary is either poorly illuminated or completely absent in the migrated image. To provide a solution to this problem, we have developed two RTM methods for imaging salt boundaries, which use transmitted wavefields. In the first technique, downgoing waves, typically recorded in walkaway vertical seismic profile surveys, are used to image the salt flank via the generation of aplanatic isochrones. This image can be generated in the absence of an explicit interpretation of the salt flank using dual migration velocity models, as demonstrated on a 3D walkaway field data set from the Gulf of Mexico. In the second technique, we extend the basic theory to include imaging of upgoing source wavefields, which are transmitted at the base salt from below, as acquired by a surface acquisition geometry. This technique has similarities to the prism-imaging method, yet it uses transmitted instead of reflected waves at the salt boundary. Downgoing and upgoing methods are shown to satisfactorily generate an image of the salt flank; however, transmission imaging can create artifacts if reflection arrivals are included in the migration or the acquisition geometry is limited in extent. Increased wavelet stretch is also observed due to the higher transmission coefficient. An important benefit of these methods is that transmission imaging produces an opposite depth shift to errors in the velocity model compared with imaging of reflections. When combined with conventional seismic reflection surveys, this behavior can be used to provide a constraint on the accuracy of the salt and/or subsalt velocities.

Reverse time migration backscattering contains kinematic information that can be used to constrain velocity models. The backscattering results from the correlation between forward scattered and backscattered wavefields from sharp interfaces, i.e., sediment-salt interfaces. The synchronization between these wavefields depends on the velocity of the sediment section and the correct interpretation of the sharp boundary. We have developed an optimization workflow in which the sediment velocity and the sharp boundary are updated iteratively. The presence of sharp boundaries in the model lead to high- and low-wavenumber components in the objective function gradient; the high-wavenumber components correspond to the correlation of wavefields traveling in opposite directions, whereas the low-wavenumber components correspond to the correlation of wavefields traveling in the same direction. This behavior is similar to reverse time migration in which the high-wavenumber components represent the reflectors (the signal) and the low-wavenumber components represent backscattering (noise). The opposite is true in tomography: The low wavenumber components represent changes to the velocity model, and the high-wavenumber components are noise that needs to be filtered out. We use a directional filter based on Poynting vectors during the gradient computation to preserve the smooth components of the gradient, thus spreading information away from the sharp boundary. Our tests indicated that velocity models are better constrained when we include the sharp boundaries (and the associated backscattering) in wavefield tomography.

The availability of wide-azimuth data and the use of reverse time migration (RTM) have dramatically increased the capabilities of imaging complex subsalt geology. With these improvements, the current obstacle for creating accurate subsalt images now lies in the velocity model. One of the challenges is to generate common image gathers that take full advantage of the additional information provided by wide-azimuth data and the additional accuracy provided by RTM for velocity model updating. A solution is to generate 3D angle domain common image gathers from RTM, which are indexed by subsurface reflection angle and subsurface azimuth angle. We apply these 3D angle gathers to subsalt tomography with the result that there were improvements in velocity updating with a wide-azimuth data set in the Gulf of Mexico.

Various reverse time migration (RTM) angle gather generation techniques have been developed to address poor subsalt data quality and multiarrival induced problems in gathers from Kirchhoff migration. But these techniques introduce new problems, such as inaccuracies in 2D subsurface angle gathers and edge diffraction artifacts in 3D subsurface angle gathers. The unique rich-azimuth data set acquired over the Shenzi field in the Gulf of Mexico enabled the generally artifact-free generation of 3D subsurface angle gathers. Using this data set, we carried out suprasalt tomography and salt model building steps and then produced 3D angle gathers to update the subsalt velocity. We used tilted transverse isotropy RTM with extended image condition to generate full 3D subsurface offset domain common image gathers, which were subsequently converted to 3D angle gathers. The angle gathers were substacked along the subsurface azimuth axis into azimuth sectors. Residual moveout analysis was carried out, and ray-based tomography was used to update velocities. The updated velocity model resulted in improved imaging of the subsalt section. We also applied residual moveout and selective stacking to 3D angle gathers from the final migration to produce an optimized stack image.

Using the two-way elastic-wave equation, elastic reverse time migration (ERTM) is superior to acoustic RTM because ERTM can handle mode conversions and S-wave propagations in complex realistic subsurface. However, ERTM results may not only contain classical backscattering noises, but they may also suffer from false images associated with primary P- and S-wave reflections along their nonphysical paths. These false images are produced by specific wave paths in migration velocity models in the presence of sharp interfaces or strong velocity contrasts. We have addressed these issues explicitly by introducing a primary noise removal strategy into ERTM, in which the up- and downgoing waves are efficiently separated from the pure-mode vector P- and S-wavefields during source- and receiver-side wavefield extrapolation. Specifically, we investigate a new method of vector wavefield decomposition, which allows us to produce the same phases and amplitudes for the separated P- and S-wavefields as those of the input elastic wavefields. A complex function involved with the Hilbert transform is used in up- and downgoing wavefield decomposition. Our approach is cost effective and avoids the large storage of wavefield snapshots that is required by the conventional wavefield separation technique. A modified dot-product imaging condition is proposed to produce multicomponent PP-, PS-, SP-, and SS-images. We apply our imaging condition to two synthetic models, and we demonstrate the improvement on the image quality of ERTM.

We have developed a new method of extracting angle-domain common-image gathers (ADCIGs) from prestack reverse time migration (RTM) that has minimal intermediate storage requirements. To include multipathing, we applied an imaging condition for prestack RTM that uses multiple excitation image times. Instead of saving the full-source snapshots at all time steps, we picked and saved only a few of the highest amplitude arrivals, and their corresponding excitation times, of the source wavefield at each grid point, and we crosscorrelated with the receiver wavefield. When extracting the ADCIGs from RTM, we calculated the source propagation direction from the gradient of the excitation times. The result was that the source time snapshots do not have to be saved or reconstructed during RTM or while extracting ADCIGs. We calculated the receiver propagation direction from Poynting vectors during the receiver extrapolation at each time step and the reflector normal direction by the phase-gradient method. With a new strategy that uses three direction vectors (the source and receiver propagation directions as well as the reflector normal direction), we provided more reliable ADCIGs that are free of low-wavenumber artifacts than any two of them do separately, when the migration velocity model was near to the correct velocity model. The 2D and 3D synthetic tests demonstrated the successful application of the new algorithms with acceptable accuracy, improved storage efficiency, and without an input/output bottleneck.

Seismic depth migration aims to produce an image of seismic reflection interfaces. Ray methods are suitable for subsurface target-oriented imaging and are less costly compared to two-way wave-equation-based migration, but break down in cases when a complex velocity structure gives rise to the appearance of caustics. Ray methods also have difficulties in correctly handling the different branches of the wavefront that result from wave propagation through a caustic. On the other hand, migration methods based on the two-way wave equation, referred to as reverse-time migration, are known to be capable of dealing with these problems. However, they are very expensive, especially in the 3D case. It can be prohibitive if many iterations are needed, such as for velocity-model building. Our method relies on the calculation of the Green functions for the classical wave equation by per-forming a summation of Gaussian beams for the direct and back-propagated wavefields. The subsurface image is obtained by cal-culating the coherence between the direct and backpropagated wavefields. To a large extent, our method combines the advantages of the high computational speed of ray-based migration with the high accuracy of reverse-time wave-equation migration because it can overcome problems with caustics, handle all arrivals, yield good images of steep flanks, and is readily extendible to target-oriented implementation. We have demonstrated the quality of our method with several state-of-the-art benchmark subsurface models, which have velocity variations up to a high degree of complexity. Our algorithm is especially suited for efficient imaging of selected subsurface subdomains, which is a large advantage particularly for 3D imaging and velocity-model refinement applications such as subsalt velocity-model improvement. Because our method is also capable of providing highly accurate migration results in structurally complex subsurface settings, we have also included the concept of true-amplitude imaging in our migration technique.
