In recent years, human–machine interactions encompass many avenues of life, ranging from personal communications to professional activities. This trend has allowed for person identification based on behavior rather than physical traits to emerge as a growing research domain, which spans areas such as online education, e-commerce, e-communication, and biometric security. The expression of opinions is an example of online behavior that is commonly shared through the liking of online images. Visual aesthetic is a behavioral biometric that involves using a person’s sense of fondness for images. The identification of individuals using their visual aesthetic values as discriminatory features is an emerging domain of research. This paper introduces a novel method for aesthetic feature dimensionality reduction using gene expression programming. The proposed system is capable of using a tree-based genetic approach for feature recombination. Reducing feature dimensionality improves classifier accuracy, reduces computation runtime, and minimizes required storage. The results obtained on a dataset of 200 Flickr users evaluating 40,000 images demonstrate a 95% accuracy of identity recognition based solely on users’ aesthetic preferences.

Person identification plays an important role in semantic analysis of video content. This paper presents a novel method to automatically label persons in video sequence captured from fixed camera. Instead of leveraging traditional face recognition approaches, we deal with the task of person identification by fusing information from motion sensor platforms, like smart phones, carried on human bodies and extracted from camera video. More specifically, a sequence of motion features extracted from camera video are compared with each of those collected from accelerometers of smart phones. When strong correlation is detected, identity information transmitted from the corresponding smart phone is used to identify the phone wearer. To test the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method, extensive experiments are conducted which achieved impressive performance.

With the development of mobile platform, such as smart cellphone and pad, the E-Learning model has been rapidly developed. However, due to the low completion rate for E-Learning platform, it is very necessary to analyze the behavior characteristics of online learners to intelligently adjust online education strategy and enhance the quality of learning. In this paper, we analyzed the relation indicators of E-Learning to build the student profile and gave countermeasures. Adopting the similarity computation and Jaccard coefficient algorithm, we designed a system model to clean and dig into the educational data and also the students’ learning attitude and the duration of learning behavior to establish student profile. According to the E-Learning resources and learner behaviors, we also present the intelligent guide model to guide both E-Learning platform and learners to improve learning things. The study on student profile can help the E-Learning platform to meet and guide the students’ learning behavior deeply and also to provide personalized learning situation and promote the optimization of the E-Learning.

Due to the pandemic, online education has made trouble for students regarding access, academic performance, motivation, and remote work difficulties for instructors. In this study, the experiences of working from home and online education of women in academia in Turkey will be understood and explored. The qualitative research method, namely in-depth interviews, was used to acquire detailed knowledge about the issue. The similarities and/or differences of the experiences were discussed according to the three main profiles that emerged. While unmarried women have benefited from this process and increased their professional activities, married women with children were seen as the most disadvantaged group in work-life balance, home conditions, and professional careers.

Gene Expression Programming (GEP) is a genetic algorithm that evolves linear chromosomes encoding nonlinear (tree-like) structures. In the original GEP algorithm, the genome size is problem specific and is determined through trial and error. In this work, a novel method for adaptively tuning the genome size is presented. The approach introduces new mutation, transposition and recolI)bination operators that enable a population of heterogeneously structured chromosomes, something the original GEP algorithm does not support. This permits crossbreeding between normally incompatible individuals, speciation within a population, increases the evolvability of the representations and enhances parallel GEP. To test our approach an assortment of problems were used, including symbolic regression, classification and parameter optimization. Our experimental results show that our approach provides a solution for the problem of self-adaptively tuning the genome size of GEP's representation.

The number of students enrolling in online degree programs and courses has increased in recent years. To improve the learning process, emphasis has been laid on designing more effective learning environments, increasing instructor's presence online and student retention. The role of technology in designing personalized and interactive online classrooms has also been accepted. A large component of the online student population comprises of adult, non-traditional, older age-group, students, who prefer online education because of its flexibility and convenience. Online education offers these mature learners an opportunity to study, work and fulfill their family obligations, all at the same time. However, these students have different learning styles, physical traits and lifestyles from the mainstream students, which influences their perception of online education and the various virtual pedagogical tools. This chapter focuses on African American adult learners, and the factors they consider to be important in making online classes more personal, interactive and informative.

The insertion of implanted venous access systems for children undergoing prolonged courses of chemotherapy has become a common procedure in pediatric surgical oncology. While not permanently implanted, the devices are expected to remain functional until cure of the primary disease is assured. Despite careful patient selection and standardised insertion and access techniques, some devices fail. The most commonly encountered problems are colonisation of the device with bacteria and catheter occlusion. Both of these difficulties relate to the development of a biofilm within the port and catheter. The morphology and evolution of biofilms in indwelling vascular catheters is the subject of ongoing investigation. To date, however, such investigations have been confined to the examination of fragments of biofilm scraped or sonicated from sections of catheter. This report describes a novel method for the extraction of intact biofilms from indwelling catheters.15 children with Wilm’s tumour and who had received venous implants were studied. Catheters were removed because of infection (n=6) or electively at the end of chemotherapy.
