Recently, drive-by bridge inspection has attracted increasing attention in the bridge monitoring field. A number of studies have given confidence in the feasibility of the approach to detect, quantify, and localize damages. However, the speed of the inspection truck represents a major obstacle to the success of this method. High speeds are essential to induce a significant amount of kinetic energy to stimulate the bridge modes of vibration. On the other hand, low speeds are necessary to collect more data and to attenuate the vibration of the vehicle due to the roughness of the road and, hence, magnify the bridge influence on the vehicle responses. This article introduces Frequency Independent Underdamped Pinning Stochastic Resonance (FI-UPSR) as a new technique, which possesses the ability to extract bridge dynamic properties from the responses of a vehicle that passes over the bridge at high speed. Stochastic Resonance (SR) is a phenomenon where feeble information such as weak signals can be amplified through the assistance of background noise. In this study, bridge vibrations that are present in the vehicle responses when it passes over the bridge are the feeble information while the noise counts for the effect of the road roughness on the vehicle vibration. UPSR is one of the SR models that has been chosen in this study for its suitability to extract the bridge vibration. The main contributions of this article are: (1) introducing a Frequency Independent-Stochastic Resonance model known as the FI-UPSR and (2) implementing this model to extract the bridge vibration from the responses of a fast passing vehicle.

As a promising topic of research, Vehicular Cloud (VC) incorporates cloud computing and ad-hoc vehicular network (VANET). In VC, supplier vehicles provide their services to consumer vehicles in real-time. These services have a significant impact on the applications of internet access, storage and data. Due to the high-speed mobility of vehicles, users in consumer vehicles need a mechanism to discover services in their vicinity. Besides this, quality of service varies from one supplier vehicle to another; thus, consumer vehicles attempt to pick out the most appropriate services. In this paper, we propose a novel protocol named RSU-aided Cluster-based Vehicular Clouds protocol (RCVC), which constructs the VC using the Road Side Unit (RSU) directory and Cluster Head (CH) directory to make the resources of supplier vehicles more visible. While clusters of vehicles that move on the same road form a mobile cloud, the remaining vehicles form a different cloud on the road side unit. Furthermore, the consumption operation is achieved via the service selection method, which is managed by the CHs and RSUs based on a mathematical model to select the best services. Simulation results prove the effectiveness of our protocol in terms of service discovery and end-to-end delay, where we achieved service discovery and end-to-end delay of 3 × 10−3 s and 13 × 10−2 s, respectively. Moreover, we carried out an experimental comparison, revealing that the proposed method outperformed several states of the art protocols.

AbstractEvent-activated biological-inspired subwavelength (sub-λ) photonic neural networks are of key importance for future energy-efficient and high-bandwidth artificial intelligence systems. However, a miniaturized light-emitting nanosource for spike-based operation of interest for neuromorphic optical computing is still lacking. In this work, we propose and theoretically analyze a novel nanoscale nanophotonic neuron circuit. It is formed by a quantum resonant tunneling (QRT) nanostructure monolithic integrated into a sub-λ metal-cavity nanolight-emitting diode (nanoLED). The resulting optical nanosource displays a negative differential conductance which controls the all-or-nothing optical spiking response of the nanoLED. Here we demonstrate efficient activation of the spiking response via high-speed nonlinear electrical modulation of the nanoLED. A model that combines the dynamical equations of the circuit which considers the nonlinear voltage-controlled current characteristic, and rate equations that takes into account the Purcell enhancement of the spontaneous emission, is used to provide a theoretical framework to investigate the optical spiking dynamic properties of the neuromorphic nanoLED. We show inhibitory- and excitatory-like optical spikes at multi-gigahertz speeds can be achieved upon receiving exceptionally low (sub-10 mV) synaptic-like electrical activation signals, lower than biological voltages of 100 mV, and with remarkably low energy consumption, in the range of 10–100 fJ per emitted spike. Importantly, the energy per spike is roughly constant and almost independent of the incoming modulating frequency signal, which is markedly different from conventional current modulation schemes. This method of spike generation in neuromorphic nanoLED devices paves the way for sub-λ incoherent neural elements for fast and efficient asynchronous neural computation in photonic spiking neural networks.

Determination of high-speed crafts’ hydrodynamic coefficients will help to analyze the dynamics of these kinds of vessels and the factors affecting their dynamic stabilities. Also, it can be useful and effective in controlling the vessel instabilities. The main purpose of this study is to determine the coefficients of longitudinal motions of a planing catamaran with and without a hydrofoil using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes method to evaluate the foil effects on them. Determination of hydrodynamic coefficients by experimental approach is costly and requires meticulous laboratory equipment; therefore, utilizing the numerical methods and developing a virtual laboratory seem highly efficient. In this study, the numerical results for hydrodynamic coefficients of a high-speed craft are verified against Troesch’s experimental results. In the following, after determination of hydrodynamic coefficients of a planing catamaran with and without foil, the foil effects on its hydrodynamic coefficients are evaluated. The results indicate that most of the coefficients are frequency-independent especially at high frequencies.

In order to better master the production process and the road performance of rubber asphalt, the paper studied the influence law of mixing method, mixing temperature, mixing time and rubber powder content on the performance of rubber asphalt. The results show that all the indexes except the viscosity of rubber asphalt has little change with different mixing methods, and the rubber asphalt has the best performance under the high-speed stirring molding method but the worst performance under the high-speed shearing molding method. Meanwhile, the performance of rubber asphalt change visibly with different mixing temperatures, on which the excessively high or low production temperature has negative significance, so the optimal production temperature would be recommended as 180~200°C. Furthermore, the mixing time and the rubber powder content are the two critical factors which may greatly affect the performance of rubber asphalt, followed by the mixing temperature and the mixing method.

Based on the target detection of alignment template, the paper designs a lane alignment template by using correlation matching method, and combines with genetic algorithm for template stochastic matching and optimization to realize the lane detection. In order to solve the real-time problem of lane detection algorithm based on genetic algorithm, this paper uses the high performance multi-core DSP chip TMS320C6474 as the core, combines with high-speed data transmission technology of Rapid10, realizes the hardware parallel processing of the lane detection algorithm. By Rapid10 bus, the data transmission speed between the DSP and the DSP can reach 3.125Gbps, it basically realizes transmission without delay, and thereby solves the high speed transmission of the large data quantity between processor. The experimental results show that, no matter the calculated lane line, or the running time is better than the single DSP and PC at the parallel C6474 platform. In addition, the road detection is accurate and reliable, and it has good robustness.

AbstractDepending on the machine design, milling machines can show a significant variation of their dynamic properties with respect to the axes configurations, in particular at high speed spindle rotations and high feedrates. Moreover, the workpiece and the milling tool are critical parts of the machine tool and can have a major effect on the dynamic properties. Certain combinations of milling tool,workpiece, tool engagement, process parameters and axes configurations can come along with undesired forced or self-excited vibrations. So far, planning of milling processes usually does not account for these unwanted vibrations. The focus of this paper is to present a modeling framework, which accounts for the abovementioned influences via simulation. The dynamic properties of various workpieces and tools as well as the dynamic properties for many different axes configurations are stored in databases. Based on these databases, the dynamics of any given machine tool configuration can be simulated efficiently based on a substructure coupling approach and an interpolation strategy.

Transmission of electrical energy from a catenary system to traction units must be safe and reliable especially for high speed trains. Modern pantographs have to meet these requirements. Pantographs are subjected to several forces acting on their structural elements. These forces come from pantograph drive, inertia forces, aerodynamic effects, vibration of traction units etc. Modern approach to static and dynamic analysis should take into account: mass distribution of particular parts, physical properties of used materials, kinematic joints character at mechanical nodes, nonlinear parameters of kinematic joints, defining different parametric waveforms of forces and torques, and numerical dynamic simulation coupled with FEM calculations. In this work methods for the formulation of the governing equations of motion are presented. Some of these methods are more suitable for automated computer implementation. The novel computer methods recommended for static and dynamic analysis of pantographs are presented. Possibilities of dynamic analysis using CAD and CAE computer software are described. Original results are also presented. Conclusions related to dynamic properties of pantographs are included. Chapter 2 presents the methods used for formulation of the equation of pantograph motion. Chapter 3 is devoted to modelling of forces in multibody systems. In chapter 4 the selected computer tools for dynamic analysis are described. Chapter 5 shows the possibility of FEM analysis coupled with dynamic simulation. In chapter 6 the summary of this work is presented.
