An indoor localization system based on off-the-shelf smartphone sensors is presented which employs the magnetometer to find user location. Further assisted by the accelerometer and gyroscope, the proposed system is able to locate the user without any prior knowledge of user initial position. The system exploits the fingerprint database approach for localization. Traditional fingerprinting technology stores data intensity values in database such as RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) values in the case of WiFi fingerprinting and magnetic flux intensity values in the case of geomagnetic fingerprinting. The down side is the need to update the database periodically and device heterogeneity. We solve this problem by using the fingerprint database of patterns formed by magnetic flux intensity values. The pattern matching approach solves the problem of device heterogeneity and the algorithm’s performance with Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 is comparable. A deep learning based artificial neural network is adopted to identify the user state of walking and stationary and its accuracy is 95%. The localization is totally infrastructure independent and does not require any other technology to constraint the search space. The experiments are performed to determine the accuracy in three buildings of Yeungnam University, Republic of Korea with different path lengths and path geometry. The results demonstrate that the error is 2–3 m for 50 percentile with various buildings. Even though many locations in the same building exhibit very similar magnetic attitude, the algorithm achieves an accuracy of 4 m for 75 percentile irrespective of the device used for localization.

Localization technologies play an important role in disaster management and emergence response. In areas where the environment does not change much after an accident or in the case of dangerous areas monitoring, indoor fingerprint-based localization can be used. In such scenarios, a positioning system needs to have both a high accuracy and a rapid response. However, these two requirements are usually conflicting since a fingerprint-based indoor localization system with high accuracy usually has complex algorithms and needs to process a large amount of data, and therefore has a slow response. This problem becomes even worse when both the size of monitoring area and the number of reference nodes increase. To address this challenging problem, this paper proposes a two-level positioning algorithm in order to improve both the accuracy and the response time. In the off-line stage, a fingerprint database is divided into several sub databases by using an affinity propagation clustering (APC) algorithm based on Shepard similarity. The online stage has two steps: (1) a coarse positioning algorithm is adopted to find the most similar sub database by matching the cluster center with the fingerprint of the node tested, which will narrow the search space and consequently save time; (2) in the sub database area, a support vector regression (SVR) algorithm with its parameters being optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used for fine positioning, thus improving the online positioning accuracy. Both experiment results and actual implementations proved that the proposed two-level localization method is more suitable than other methods in term of algorithm complexity, storage requirements and localization accuracy in dangerous area monitoring.

Most applied indoor localization is based on distance and fingerprint techniques. The distance-based technique converts specific parameters to a distance, while the fingerprint technique stores parameters as the fingerprint database. The widely used Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, e.g., Wi-Fi and ZigBee, provide the localization parameters, i.e., received signal strength indicator (RSSI). The fingerprint technique advantages over the distance-based method as it straightforwardly uses the parameter and has better accuracy. However, the burden in database reconstruction in terms of complexity and cost is the disadvantage of this technique. Some solutions, i.e., interpolation, image-based method, machine learning (ML)-based, have been proposed to enhance the fingerprint methods. The limitations are complex and evaluated only in a single environment or simulation. This paper proposes applying classical interpolation and regression to create the synthetic fingerprint database using only a relatively sparse RSSI dataset. We use bilinear and polynomial interpolation and polynomial regression techniques to create the synthetic database and apply our methods to the 2D and 3D environments. We obtain an accuracy improvement of 0.2m for 2D and 0.13m for 3D by applying the synthetic database. A major burden of signal strength-based fingerprinting for indoor positioning is the generation and maintenance of a radio map, also known as a fingerprint database. Model-based radio maps are generated much faster than measurement-based radio maps but are generally not accurate enough. This work proposes a method to automatically construct and optimize a model-based radio map. The method is based on unsupervised learning, where random walks, for which the ground truth locations are unknown, serve as input for the optimization, along with a floor plan and a location tracking algorithm. No measurement campaign or site survey, which are labor-intensive and time-consuming, or inertial sensor measurements, which are often not available and consume additional power, are needed for this approach. Experiments in a large office building, covering over 1100 m2, resulted in median accuracies of up to 2.07 m, or a relative improvement of 28.6% with only 15 min of unlabeled training data.

Presently, a precise localization and tracking process becomes significant to enable smartphone-assisted navigation to maximize accuracy in the real-time environment. Fingerprint-based localization is the commonly available model for accomplishing effective outcomes. With this motivation, this study focuses on designing efficient smartphone-assisted indoor localization and tracking models using the glowworm swarm optimization (ILT-GSO) algorithm. The ILT-GSO algorithm involves creating a GSO algorithm based on the light-emissive characteristics of glowworms to determine the location. In addition, the Kalman filter is applied to mitigate the estimation process and update the initial position of the glowworms. A wide range of experiments was carried out, and the results are investigated in terms of distinct evaluation metrics. The simulation outcome demonstrated considerable enhancement in the real-time environment and reduced the computational complexity. The ILT-GSO algorithm has resulted in an increased localization performance with minimal error over the recent techniques.

Indoor localization systems are susceptible to higher errors and do not meet the current standards of indoor localization. Moreover, the performance of such approaches is limited by device dependence. The use of Wi-Fi makes the localization process vulnerable to dynamic factors and energy hungry. A multi-sensor fusion based indoor localization approach is proposed to overcome these issues. The proposed approach predicts pedestrians’ current location with smartphone sensors data alone. The proposed approach aims at mitigating the impact of device dependency on the localization accuracy and lowering the localization error in the magnetic field based localization systems. We trained a deep learning based convolutional neural network to recognize the indoor scene which helps to lower the localization error. The recognized scene is used to identify a specific floor and narrow the search space. The database built of magnetic field patterns helps to lower the device dependence. A modified K nearest neighbor (mKNN) is presented to calculate the pedestrian’s current location. The data from pedestrian dead reckoning further refines this location and an extended Kalman filter is implemented to this end. The performance of the proposed approach is tested with experiments on Galaxy S8 and LG G6 smartphones. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve an accuracy of 1.04 m at 50 percent, regardless of the smartphone used for localization. The proposed mKNN outperforms K nearest neighbor approach, and mean, variance, and maximum errors are lower than those of KNN. Moreover, the proposed approach does not use Wi-Fi for localization and is more energy efficient than those of Wi-Fi based approaches. Experiments reveal that localization without scene recognition leads to higher errors.

Fingerprint-based indoor localization has become one of the most attractive and promising techniques; however, one primary concern for this technology to be fully practical is to maintain the fingerprint database to combat harsh indoor environmental dynamics, especially in the large-scale and long-term deployment. In this article, focusing on three key problems now existing in fingerprint database updating approaches such as the mechanism for triggering updates, the collection of new fingerprints and determination of fingerprints’ location information, we propose a fuzzy map mechanism and decision methods of neighbours’ fingerprints in response to all kinds of changes in indoor environments. Meanwhile, we design a static data collecting mechanism to filter reliable information from numerous users’ inputs and propose a neighbours’ fingerprint-assisted technique to calculate the location of fingerprints. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed solution not only improves the performance of updating the fingerprint database in real time and robustness by 40% and 50%, respectively, but also reduces the update frequency and improves mean location accuracy by over 40%.
