This article presents the use of a sensor with fiber Bragg grating along with an interrogation system used for monitoring the overhead lines’ wire elongation. The possible interrogation methods based on adjusted filters were considered. In the experimental part, three types of fiber Bragg grating pairs, characterized by a small shift in spectra in pairs and gratings with exact matching, were examined. The study showed that, by choosing the appropriate mechanical parameters of the elongation transformer with the optical parameters of the sensor and dedicated filter, the optomechanical system can be adjusted to the required range of overhead line wire sag observation. The range of sag depends on the distance between the poles, the wire type, and its real length in the span, which effectively determines the sag.

Snow and ice disasters on power system safe and reliable operation of the transmission line has a great threaten.An overhead conductor tension sensor based on fiber Bragg grating is developed.The sensor contains a strain sensor module and a temperature compensation module which can offer temperature compensation for strain sensing module.The sensor connected to the tower and the insulator with metallic clamps.If there is ice on the transmission line,the tension of the sensor sensing module of the center wavelength will corresponding change,and the ice condition of the transmission wires can be reflected by the center wavelength variation.Experiment indicates that the tension sensitivity coefficient of the sensor is 9.8 pm/kN,the repeatability error is 1.78% FS,the nonlinear error is2.4% FS, the hysteresis is 1.5% FS.

Structures and machines are very susceptible to some barely visible defects; acoustic emission (AE) is an effective technique of detecting defects and examining growth and location of these defects. In this paper, a new method was proposed to predict the position of the AE source. The dynamic strain signal from the AE source was acquired by fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. Complex Morlet wavelet transform was used to extract narrowband signals from AE waves. It was proposed that the barycentric coordinate-based localization algorithm can be used to predict the coordinates of the AE source. The validation tests based on the designed AE detection system were performed on a 500 mm × 500 mm × 2 mm Al-alloy plate. The experimental results show that the proposed method is feasible.

With the continuous development of mechanical automation, the structural health monitoring techniques are increasingly high requirements for damage detection. So structural health monitoring (SHM) has been playing a significant role in terms of damage prognostics. The main contribution pursued in this investigation is to establish a detection system based on ultrasonic excitation and fiber Bragg grating sensing, which combines the advantages of the ultrasonic detection and fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Differencing from most common approaches, a new way of damage detection is based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG), which can easily realize distributed detection. The basic characteristics of fiber Bragg grating sensing system are analyzed, and the positioning algorithm of structural damage is derived in theory. On these bases, the detection system was used to analyze damage localization in the aluminum alloy plate of a hole with diameters of 6 mm. Experiments have been carried out to demonstrate that the sensing system was feasible and that the estimation method of the location algorithm was easy to implement.
