The purpose of this research was to know and evaluate the condition of aquatic environment and water quality parameters for cultivation of seaweed Ulva sp. This research was conducted on North Sulawesi Marine Education Center (NSMEC). NSMEC is planned to be built at Marine Field Station FPIK UNSRAT located in Likupang Timur Kabupaten Minahasa Utara. The waters of NSMEC development area are geographically located at 1040.437 'LU and 12504.499' BT. The determination of 4 stations was done by purposive sampling which was considered to represent the condition of waters. Coordinate stations were recorded with GPS help. The data were collected for 14 days every 6:00 pm, at 12:00 pm and 17:00 pm. The observation of environmental conditions was carried out for protection factor and substrate of water base, while water quality parameter measured in situ included depth, brightness, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO) salinity, pH and current velocity. Phosphate, nitrate and total suspended solid (TSS) were measured. Tide measurements were measured every hour for 24 hours. Data analysis used conformity matrices that included scores and weights for the determination of conformity classes. Class suitability was used to describe the suitability of seaweed. The results showed that the waters of the NSMEC development zone were in class S1 meaning very suitable for seaweed cultivation location. The analysis results of each station found that 4 stations were very suitable. As conclusion, water environment and water quality parameters of the waters of North Sulawesi Marine Education Center development area located at Marine Field Station FPIK UNSRAT were categorized as very suitable for seaweed cultivation, Ulva sp.Keywords: Ulva sp., feasibility analysis, water quality, location suitability

Abstract Water quality parameters were measured in Acı Lake. The measurements were carried out in water samples taken from five different stations over ten months. According to the results of the analyses done on the samples of water, without taking into consideration the differences of seasons and stations, the average annual values of heavy metal concentrations for Cr, Cu and Ni were found to be 0.10 mg/l, 0.11 mg/l and 0.19 mg/l dry weight, respectively. Surprisingly, Co and Cd metals were not detected at any station or at any season. Other water quality parameters, namely pH, turbidity and nitrate, fall in the intermediate value range for these measures. The comparisons of the measured parameters and the metal concentration with the water quality index show that the water quality of Acı Lake prevents the water being used as irrigation water due to high salt levels.

The experiment was conducted in two cement made cisterns for a four-week period. Important physico-chemical water quality parameters and harvesting time in periphyton production were studied. During the study period, four groups of phytoplankton and two groups of zooplankton were observed. Among phytoplankton, Chlorophyceae was the most dominant having 62% Chlorella followed by Bacillariophyceae having 15% Navicula and 12% Cyclotella, Cyanophyceae having 5% Oscillatoria and 2% Anabaena and Euglenophyceae having 2% Euglena and 1% Phacus. The grand averages of periphyton mass production were 0.569 (± 0.242) mg DM/cm2 in C-1. There was highly significant (p<0.05) variation (F = 14.692) between C-1 and C-2 in respect of periphyton production. Cistern-1 was identified as more productive due to its favourable water quality parameters, i.e., water temperature of 24.6 to 28.3 ºC, Secchi disc reading of 18 to 33 cm, dissolved oxygen of 4.67 to 9.55 mg/L, pH of 9.12 to 10.18, NO3-N of 3.58 to 10.90 mg/L, NH3-N of 0.26 to 0.40 mg/L, PO4-P of 7.5 to 3.4 mg/L, conductivity 0.412 to 0.719 Ms. Third addition of substrate, that means 18- 19th day was identified as the optimum harvesting time of periphyton production.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v23i1-2.16565Progress.
