Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls rely on its weight to resist the destabilizing earth forces acting at the back of the reinforced soil area. MSE walls are a common infrastructure along national and international transportation corridors as they are low-cost and have easy-to-install precast concrete panels. The usability of such transportation corridors depends on the safety and condition of the MSE wall system. Consequently, MSE walls have to be periodically monitored according to prevailing transportation asset management criteria during the construction and serviceability life stages to ensure that their predictable performance measures are met. To date, MSE walls are monitored using qualitative approaches such as visual inspection, which provide limited information. Aside from being time-consuming, visual inspection is susceptible to bias due to human subjectivity. Manual and visual inspection in the field has been traditionally based on the use of a total station, geotechnical field instrumentation, and/or static terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). These instruments can provide highly accurate and reliable performance measures; however, their underlying data acquisition and processing strategies are time-consuming and not scalable. The proposed strategy in this research provides several global and local serviceability measures through efficient processing of point cloud data acquired by a mobile LiDAR system (MLS) for MSE walls with smooth panels without the need for installing any targets. An ultra-high-accuracy vehicle-based LiDAR data acquisition system has been used for the data acquisition. To check the viability of the proposed methodology, a case study has been conducted to evaluate the similarity of the derived serviceability measures from TLS and MLS technologies. The results of that comparison verified that the MLS-based serviceability measures are within 1 cm and 0.3° of those obtained using TLS and thus confirmed the potential for using MLS to efficiently acquire point clouds while facilitating economical, scalable, and reliable monitoring of MSE walls.

Through the visual inspection, the appearance of size measurement, crimping size measurement, the steel core crimping length measurement and steel core tensile strength test of tension crimp barrel on 220kV transmission line. Made a detail analysis on test results combined with wire crimping theory. Pointed out the wire crimping defects caused by crimping irregularities. Analyzed the main causes of rupture accident, and made recommendations for improvement. Provides a reference to wire crimp and wire accident analysis.

Manual visual inspection of civil infrastructure is high-risk, subjective, and time-consuming. The success of deep learning and the proliferation of low-cost consumer robots has spurred rapid growth in research and application of autonomous inspections. The major components of autonomous inspection include data acquisition, data processing, and decision making, which are usually studied independently. However, for robust real-world applicability, these three aspects of the overall process need to be addressed concurrently with end-to-end testing, incorporating scenarios such as variations in structure type, color, damage level, camera distance, view angle, lighting, etc. Developing real-world datasets that span all these scenarios is nearly impossible. In this paper, we propose a framework to create a virtual visual inspection testbed using 3D synthetic environments that can enable end-to-end testing of autonomous inspection strategies. To populate the 3D synthetic environment with virtual damaged buildings, we propose the use of a non-linear finite element model to inform the realistic and automated visual rendering of different damage types, the damage state, and the material textures of what are termed herein physics-based graphics models (PBGMs). To demonstrate the benefits of the autonomous inspection testbed, three experiments are conducted with models of earthquake damaged reinforced concrete buildings. First, we implement the proposed framework to generate a new large-scale annotated benchmark dataset for post-earthquake inspections of buildings termed QuakeCity. Second, we demonstrate the improved performance of deep learning models trained using the QuakeCity dataset for inference on real data. Finally, a comparison of deep learning-based damage state estimation for different data acquisition strategies is carried out. The results demonstrate the use of PBGMs as an effective testbed for the development and validation of strategies for autonomous vision-based inspections of civil infrastructure.

A multiplex data acquisition system applied in high voltage transmission line based on electronic combined transformers is proposed in the paper. Employing an air-core coil for current measurement and current protection and a SF6 coaxial capacitance for voltage measurement, this paper proposes a method to acquisition signal based on the MSP430F1611 MCU and ADC AD7685. The data acquisition system can collect three channel analog signals (current measurement, current protection, voltage measurement) at the same time, and then pack the data, send them to the merging unit through the optical fiber. The multiplex data acquisition system is at the ground potential, so the optical power source could be abandoned and the reliability is effectively enhanced. The technology of multi-channel acquisition, high-speed communications, anti-electromagnetic interference are mainly introduced. Tests have been done and the experimental results show that this ECT meets the requirement of the 0.2s class for measurement and 5PTE for protection in IEC60044-8, voltage channel meets the requirement of the 0.2 level in IEC60044-7.

AbstractThe power system stability and reliability are stimulated by the faults on the transmission line. Many researchers have explored the performance of the transmission system under various kinds of faults. Specifically, the arrival of expeditious and effective data acquisition systems with high rate of sampling has set down the foundation for successful real-time monitoring. Using the LabVIEW and the data acquisition system’s of National Instruments (NI), virtual systems have been developed for obtaining optimal paradigmatic data with appropriate characterization and quality transmission. The primary objective of the work is to perceive and comprehend the transmission line faults with the aid of synchronized phasor measurements obtained from the phasor measurement unit (PMU) as well as protecting the system using auto-reclosing signal. The developed algorithms include phaselet coefficients for perception as well as comprehension. In order to increase the accuracy, particle swarm optimized extreme learning machine technique has also been used for comprehension. A protection scheme is employed using auto-reclosing to minimize the power loss and quick reconnection the power line in case of temporary fault. Developed algorithms have been validated on a practical laboratory transmission line using NI PMU. As the LabVIEW platform has been used for simulations, it is composed of visual displays such that the system operator can efficiently perform the planning and control decisions.
