Satellite chip shape distortions lead to signal tracking errors in pseudorange measurements, which are related to the receiver manufacturers, called receiver-related pseudorange biases. Such biases will lead to adverse effects for differential code bias (DCB) and satellite clock estimation, single point positioning (SPP) and precise point positioning (PPP) applications with pseudoranges. In order to assess the characteristics of receiver-related pseudorange biases for global positioning system (GPS), Galileo navigation satellite system (Galileo) and BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS), seven short baselines from the Multi-GNSS experiment (MGEX) network are tested. The results demonstrate that there are significant inconsistences of pseudorange biases according to satellites, frequencies, receiver and antenna types. For the baselines using the same receivers of TRIMBLE, pseudorange biases are within ±0.2 ns with the same antennas, while they increase to ±0.6 ns with the different antennas. As for baselines with mixed receiver types, pseudorange biases can reach up to 2.5 ns. Among GPS/Galileo/BDS, Galileo shows the smallest pseudorange biases, and the obvious inconsistences of pseudorange biases are observed between BDS-2 and BDS-3, and Galileo in-orbit validation (IOV) satellites and full operational configuration (FOC) satellites. In order to validate receiver-related pseudorange biases, we carry out relative positioning experiments using short baselines. The results show that the RMS values of position errors are reduced 12.6% and 11.4% in horizontal and vertical components with biases correction. The impacts of receiver-related pseudorange biases on wide-lane (WL) ambiguity are also discussed. The results indicate that the percentage of the fractional parts within ±0.1 cycles have an obvious increase with the pseudorange biases correction, and RMS values of the fractional parts are reduced 28.9% and 67.6% for GPS and BDS, respectively.

Global Navigation Satellite System pseudorange biases are of great importance for precise positioning, timing and ionospheric modeling. The existence of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) receiver-related pseudorange biases will lead to the loss of precision in the BDS satellite clock, differential code bias estimation, and other precise applications, especially when inhomogeneous receivers are used. In order to improve the performance of BDS precise applications, two ionosphere-free and geometry-free combinations and ionosphere-free pseudorange residuals are proposed to calibrate the raw receiver-related pseudorange biases of BDS on each frequency. Then, the BDS triple-frequency receiver-related pseudorange biases of seven different manufacturers and twelve receiver models are calibrated. Finally, the effects of receiver-related pseudorange bias are analyzed by BDS single-frequency single point positioning (SPP), single- and dual-frequency precise point positioning (PPP), wide-lane uncalibrated phase delay (UPD) estimation, and ambiguity resolution, respectively. The results show that the BDS SPP performance can be significantly improved by correcting the receiver-related pseudorange biases and the accuracy improvement is about 20% on average. Moreover, the accuracy of single- and dual-frequency PPP is improved mainly due to a faster convergence when the receiver-related pseudorange biases are corrected. On the other hand, the consistency of wide-lane UPD among different stations is improved significantly and the standard deviation of wide-lane UPD residuals is decreased from 0.195 to 0.061 cycles. The average success rate of wide-lane ambiguity resolution is improved about 42.10%.

Code Single Point Positioning Using Nominal Gnss Constellations (Future Perception) Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have an endless number of applications in industry, science, military, transportation and recreation & sports. Two systems are currently in operation namely GPS (the USA Global Positioning System) and GLONASS (the Russian GLObal NAvigation Satellite System), and a third is planned, the European satellite navigation system GALILEO. The potential performance improvements achievable through combining these systems could be significant and expectations are high. The need is inevitable to explore the future of positioning from different nominal constellations. In this research paper, Bernese 5.0 software could be modified to simulate and process GNSS observations from three different constellations (GPS, Glonass and Galileo) using different combinations. This study presents results of code single point positioning for five stations using the three constellations and different combinations.

In the traditional raw Doppler (RD) velocity estimation method, the positioning error of the pseudorange-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) single point positioning (SPP) solution affects the accuracy of the velocity estimation through the station-satellite unit cosine vector. To eliminate the effect of positioning errors, this paper proposes a carrier-phase-based second generation of the BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS-2) precise point positioning (PPP) RD velocity estimation method. Compared with the SPP positioning accuracy of tens of meters, the BDS-2 kinematic PPP positioning accuracy is significantly improved to the dm level. In order to verify the reliability and applicability of the developed method, three dedicated tests, the vehicle-borne, ship-borne and air-borne platforms, were conducted. In the vehicle-borne experiment, the GNSS and inertial navigation system (INS)-integrated velocity solution was chosen as the reference. The velocity accuracy of the BDS-2 PPP RD method was better than that of SPP RD by 28.4%, 27.1% and 26.1% in the east, north and up directions, respectively. In the ship-borne and air-borne experiments, the BDS-2 PPP RD velocity accuracy was improved by 17.4%, 21.4%, 17.8%, and 38.1%, 17.6%, 17.5% in the same three directions, respectively, compared with the BDS-2 SPP RD solutions. The reference in these two tests is the real-time kinematic (RTK) Position Derivation (PD)-based velocity.

For multi-Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations, the Geometric Dilution of Precision (GDOP) is an important parameter utilised for the selection of satellites. This paper has derived new formulae to describe the change of GDOP. The result shows that, for GNSS single point positioning solutions, if one more satellite belonging to the existing tracked multi-GNSS constellation used in the single point positioning solution is added, the GDOP always decreases with the number of the added satellites. On the other hand, when the constellation of the added satellite is not from the tracked existing constellations, the different numbers of the added satellites have different influences on the change of GDOP. Generally, adding one satellite from another constellation into the existing multi-GNSS constellations will increase the GDOP, but adding two satellites will decrease the GDOP compared with adding one from another constellation. Additionally, the GDOP also increases in the cases of adding two satellites from two different constellations into the tracked existing constellations.

AbstractSmartphones typically compute position using duty-cycled Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 code measurements and Single Point Positioning (SPP) processing with the aid of cellular and other measurements. This internal positioning solution has an accuracy of several tens to hundreds of meters in realistic environments (handheld, vehicle dashboard, suburban, urban forested, etc.). With the advent of multi-constellation, dual-frequency GNSS chips in smartphones, along with the ability to extract raw code and carrier-phase measurements, it is possible to use Precise Point Positioning (PPP) to improve positioning without any additional equipment. This research analyses GNSS measurement quality parameters from a Xiaomi MI 8 dual-frequency smartphone in varied, realistic environments. In such environments, the system suffers from frequent phase loss-of-lock leading to data gaps. The smartphone measurements have low and irregular carrier-to-noise (C/N0) density ratio and high multipath, which leads to poor or no positioning solution. These problems are addressed by implementing a prediction technique for data gaps and a C/N0-based stochastic model for assigning realistic a priori weights to the observables in the PPP processing engine. Using these conditioning techniques, there is a 64% decrease in the horizontal positioning Root Mean Square (RMS) error and 100% positioning solution availability in sub-urban environments tested. The horizontal and 3D RMS were 20 cm and 30 cm respectively in a static open-sky environment and the horizontal RMS for the realistic kinematic scenario was 7 m with the phone on the dashboard of the car, using the SwiftNav Piksi Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) solution as reference. The PPP solution, computed using the YorkU PPP engine, also had a 5–10% percentage point more availability than the RTK solution, computed using RTKLIB software, since missing measurements in the logged file cause epoch rejection and a non-continuous solution, a problem which is solved by prediction for the PPP solution. The internal unaided positioning solution of the phone obtained from the logged NMEA (The National Marine Electronics Association) file was computed using point positioning with the aid of measurements from internal sensors. The PPP solution was 80% more accurate than the internal solution which had periodic drifts due to non-continuous computation of solution.

On 27 December 2012 it was announced officially that the Chinese Navigation Satellite System BeiDou (BDS) was able to provide operational services over the Asia-Pacific region. The quality of BDS observations was confirmed as comparable with those of GPS, and relative positioning in static and kinematic modes were also demonstrated to be very promising. As Precise Point Positioning (PPP) technology is widely recognized as a method of precise positioning service, especially in real-time, in this contribution we concentrate on the PPP performance using BDS data only. BDS PPP in static, kinematic and simulated real-time kinematic mode is carried out for a regional network with six stations equipped with GPS- and BDS-capable receivers, using precise satellite orbits and clocks estimated from a global BDS tracking network. To validate the derived positions and trajectories, they are compared to the daily PPP solution using GPS data. The assessment confirms that the performance of BDS PPP is very comparable with GPS in terms of both convergence time and accuracy.

Real-time Precise Point Positioning (PPP) relies on the use of accurate satellite orbit and clock corrections. If these corrections contain large errors or faults, either from the system or by meaconing, they will adversely affect positioning. Therefore, such faults have to be detected and excluded. In traditional PPP, measurements that have faulty corrections are typically excluded as they are merged together. In this contribution, a new PPP model that encompasses the orbit and clock corrections as quasi-observations is presented such that they undergo the fault detection and exclusion process separate from the observations. This enables the use of measurements that have faulty corrections along with predicted values of these corrections in place of the excluded ones. Moreover, the proposed approach allows for inclusion of the complete stochastic information of the corrections. To facilitate modelling of the orbit and clock corrections as quasi-observations, International Global Navigation Satellite System Service (IGS) real-time corrections were characterised over a six-month period. The proposed method is validated and its benefits are demonstrated at two sites using three days of data.

The emergence of multiple global navigation satellite systems (multi-GNSS), including global positioning system (GPS), global navigation satellite system (GLONASS), Beidou navigation satellite system (BDS), and Galileo, brings not only great opportunities for real-time precise point positioning (PPP), but also challenges in quality control because of inevitable data anomalies. This research aims at achieving the real-time quality control of the multi-GNSS combined PPP using additional observations with opposite weight. A robust multiple-system combined PPP estimation is developed to simultaneously process observations from all the four GNSS systems as well as single, dual, or triple systems. The experiment indicates that the proposed quality control can effectively eliminate the influence of outliers on the single GPS and the multiple-system combined PPP. The analysis on the positioning accuracy and the convergence time of the proposed robust PPP is conducted based on one week’s data from 32 globally distributed stations. The positioning root mean square (RMS) error of the quad-system combined PPP is 1.2 cm, 1.0 cm, and 3.0 cm in the east, north, and upward components, respectively, with the improvements of 62.5%, 63.0%, and 55.2% compared to those of single GPS. The average convergence time of the quad-system combined PPP in the horizontal and vertical components is 12.8 min and 12.2 min, respectively, while it is 26.5 min and 23.7 min when only using single-GPS PPP. The positioning performance of the GPS, GLONASS, and BDS (GRC) combination and the GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo (GRE) combination is comparable to the GPS, GLONASS, BDS and Galileo (GRCE) combination and it is better than that of the GPS, BDS, and Galileo (GCE) combination. Compared to GPS, the improvements of the positioning accuracy of the GPS and GLONASS (GR) combination, the GPS and Galileo (GE) combination, the GPS and BDS (GC) combination in the east component are 53.1%, 43.8%, and 40.6%, respectively, while they are 55.6%, 48.1%, and 40.7% in the north component, and 47.8%, 40.3%, and 34.3% in the upward component.

Purpose This paper aims to present the problem of the integration of the global positioning system (GPS)/global navigation satellite system (GLONASS) data for the processing of aircraft position determination. Design/methodology/approach The aircraft coordinates were obtained based on GPS and GLONASS code observations for the single point positioning (SPP) method. The numerical computations were executed in the aircraft positioning software (APS) package. The mathematical scheme of equation observation of the SPP method was solved using least square estimation in stochastic processing. In the research experiment, the raw global navigation satellite system data from the Topcon HiperPro onboard receiver were applied. Findings In the paper, the mean errors of an aircraft position from APS were under 3 m. In addition, the accuracy of aircraft positioning was better than 6 m. The integrity term for horizontal protection level and vertical protection level parameters in the flight test was below 16 m. Research limitations/implications The paper presents only the application of GPS/GLONASS observations in aviation, without satellite data from other navigation systems. Practical implications The presented research method can be used in an aircraft based augmentation system in Polish aviation. Social implications The paper is addressed to persons who work in aviation and air transport. Originality/value The paper presents the SPP method as a satellite technique for the recovery of an aircraft position in an aviation test.

In recent years, global navigation satellite system (GNSS) precise point positioning (PPP) has become a standard positioning technique for many applications with typically favourable open sky conditions, e.g. precision agriculture. Unfortunately, the long convergence (and reconvergence) time of PPP often significantly limits its use in difficult and restricted signal environments typically associated with urban areas. The modernisation of GNSS will positively affect and improve the convergence time of the PPP solutions, thanks to the higher number of satellites in view that broadcast multifrequency measurements. The number and geometry of the available satellites is a key factor that impacts on the convergence time in PPP, while triple-frequency observables have been shown to greatly benefit the fixing of the carrier phase integer ambiguities. On the other hand, many studies have shown that triple-frequency combinations do not usefully contribute to a reduction of the convergence time of float PPP solutions. This paper proposes novel GPS and Galileo triple-carrier ionosphere-free combinations that aim to enhance the observability of the narrow-lane ambiguities. Tests based on simulated data have shown that these combinations can reduce the convergence time of the float PPP solution by a factor of up to 2·38 with respect to the two-frequency combinations. This approach becomes effective only after the extra wide-lane and wide-lane ambiguities have been fixed. For this reason, a new fixing method based on low-noise pseudo-range combinations corrected by the smoothed ionosphere correction is presented. By exploiting this algorithm, no more than a few minutes are required to fix the WL ambiguities for Galileo, even in cases of severe multipath environments.
